I'll be honest - I was hoping this film would rock me. Sadly, it did just the opposite.
Camp Rock had all the makings to be a next HSM, but it disappointed. The biggest problems with these types of movies is that they are beyond corny. The whole movie's dialogue was atrocious. It didn't make the movie develop nicely, didn't make me hate the antagonist enough, and didn't make me see the fate of the main "romance" in the film.
Another sign of being ameteur is that the scenes flew by too quickly - they seemingly had enough dialogue on paper, but when acted out were obviously way to quick to enjoy.
The writing is just the only thing (yet most major thing) that makes this film HORRIBLE. It could have been a hit - it could have been a blockbuster. I'll be honest, it had a plot with a lot of potential. The actors weren't that bad, I especially enjoyed Alyson Stoners performance. But Mr. Disney Writer, can you stop repeaeting the word 'jerk' every 5 seconds?
To speak the truth, the performances were even great at times. I felt the tension at the climax where Mitchie and whoever Joe Jonas plays have a little verbal fight. Had the writing been better, it coulda been a great scene!!
I have to say though, the only reason why I'll give this a four is because of the music. Contrary to HSM 2, the music in the movie - well, I'll give it a 9/10. It was really some great works of pop, and hip-hop too - and the total opposite of cheesy!! Amazing, too is what they did with the final song, how they brought "This is Me" and "Gotta find you" into one song. Granted, this is an easy technique to do because you can easily write 2 songs with the same chords just different melodies. But having the idea to do that was genius.
Final analysis: had the writing been better, it would have been a great film, considering the budget is very low.
