Disaster!
4 May 2008
Everything that was great in the original (Japanese) version is diminished in this remake. I have read in the trivia on this site that the director has not seen the original and that he even asked the actors not to watch. He better could have, because than he would have learned to make a good horror movie. What always has been great in Japanese horror movie is the atmosphere. And building up the tension slowly. It's not what you see that scares us,it is what we can't see that makes us shiver. The original was full of this ambiance and tension. And when you finally saw things you were really creeped out. This remake is full of flash, sounds and effects that are ultimately not creepy or scary. The background story to this remake in essence is the same. But Takashi made so much more sense of it that it even added to the creepiness. I don't know what the director of this remake was thinking but it is obvious that Eric Valette lacks the experience to deliver a decent horror movie. And why did he change the ringtone. It plays such an important part in the movie. So you better have a good reason to change it. I really wanted to give this movie a chance. But it is so bad that there is no way to support it. Go watch the original and see how it has to be done!
