Good and Bad

The animation is simply superb, rivaling anything Disney ever put out. Top quality art with state-of-the-art computer 3D blended seamlessly with hand drawn 2D cells.

However, the story lacks the wittiness of the Asterix comics or earlier films such as "Asterix the Gaul". Instead we have a clichéd script with a few laughs in between. Unlike "The Twelve Tasks of Asterix" which kept me rolling on the floor at every segment, Astérix et les Vikings replaced the intellectually based jokes and slapstick with sentimentality and a chirpy you-can-do-anything-just-believe-in-yourself message.

While I cheered the superior technical excellence, I mourned the loss of good scripting. So if you want a feel-good film for the whole family, look no further, but if you want laugh-till-your-sides-hurt while simultaneously simulating your brain, check out the earlier incarnations of Asterix.
