A Nice Movie, Subtle and Believable
10 April 2007
I don't know a lot about the history of golf. I know the big guys like Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan. This movie is more about what led to Americans embracing the sport that was owned by the British Isles before that. The characters are very low key and gentlemanly. Watching the Masters after having seen the film, I love that there are still elements of a sport that go back to the beginnings. There are some loose cannons on the tour, but most of the golfers observe a code that keeps them on their best behavior. I was impressed by that tug between the aristocracy and those from humbler roots. This is a wonderful story about golf, but it's also a great human story. See it for the performances. One thing I wondered about. They apparently didn't have to mark a ball if it was in your line. There's a scene where the ball is popped over the other ball.
