Review of The Cooler

The Cooler (2003)
9/10
Little, moody film with terrific performances by Willam H. Macy and Maria Bello
5 March 2007
First off, a confession: I will always have a soft place in my heart for hotels, smoky bar rooms, jazz, luck and lust. If I would ever get the chance to spend one day of my life wherever I want, it would probably be Vegas (or perhaps pre-Katrina New Orleans). Call me romantic or naive, but there's something in that specific calm and moody atmosphere that, in my opinion, captivates your mind and body and intoxicates it more than any artificial substance on the face of the planet ever could.

That being said, The Cooler is a little film that captivates this feeling to the extreme – adding father-son relationships and doves of money into the mix. William H. Macy gives a performance of a lifetime as a "cooler"; a man of bad luck whose job is to influence gamblers in a night club to lose just by standing next to them; whilst Maria Bello glows as his love interest who makes his luck turn upside down. I won't say anything more to avoid spoiling the film, but I promise you'll have a good time watching this independent hit. I know I did.
