Silent Night, Bloody Awful.
19 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes cited (mostly by its fans) as being an influence on later slashers Black Christmas and Halloween (mainly because of its use of POV shots), SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT lacks the competence of these seminal horrors and is actually a rather tedious and convoluted movie with little to recommend it.

The story revolves around an abandoned house which belongs to Jeffrey Butler, a man with a dark past which is known only to a handful of locals. However, when the few who know the truth about his family history are lured to the house by a mysterious person (claiming to be his mother), it is not long before the secrets of his past come to light.

Directed by Theodore Gershuny and starring cult actress Mary Woronov, SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT is a rather shoddy production with poor cinematography and some terrible acting. The film drags interminably and has little or no gore to liven it up (an early axe attack on two lovers shows promise, but the film falters badly after this moment).

The lighting is extremely poor, making some scenes very hard to follow (as if having a dreadful script didn't make it hard enough) and the film ends badly with some awful flashbacks attempting to explain the proceedings. Add to this the fact that the transfer to DVD is particularly awful in most cases (scratchy and blurred with bad sound quality) and I have no qualms in saying that watching SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT was a struggle to finish and I don't ever intend to repeat the experience.
