Review of Ned Kelly

Ned Kelly (2003)
7/10
Butch Cassidy in Australia
11 September 2006
This is a fairly predictable movie about a young man who has a run in with crooked police in 1871 Australia, and becomes a Robin Hood type outlaw. The state ups the ante and ups the ante until they get him, killing dozens of innocent people in the process.

It has echos of Bonny and Clyde.

Other than Ned himself, the characters are not very interesting or distinctive.

The gritty life in the outback is portrayed convincingly. This is not an Oklahoma-style prettifying of ranch life.

The theme is quite a downer -- you can't beat city hall. There is no furious revenge taking that you usually find at the end of a film with such revolting villains.
