This film works on two levels to me. The traditional level and as a sort of follow up to Basehart in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964-68).
Basehart's Voyage character resembles the General.
You never get tired of re-watching SS and for the life of me I will never know why this was a made for TV movie instead of a cinema released flick. It belongs on the sliver screen. In fact, not being made in widescreen is the only way of knowing this is a TV movie.
