Review of Johny Ustad

Johny Ustad (1980)
8/10
Mahendran's classic
20 January 2006
Mahendran is in par with Sathyajit Ray. Simplicity of story telling and bringing that out in the camera is a rare art. Influenced by Satyajit Ray, Mahendran did bring to the Tamil industry a classic collection of his movies. Jhonny is one of the classics that illustrates the life pattern of two characters who look alike and how their actions affect each other. This undoubtedly is a classic of south Indian cinema. Portrayal of a twin role in a movie has never been handled so effortlessly and artistically. This movie has real good camera work as the shots are very simple and gel in well with the flow of the movie. Mahendran has an aesthetic sense and shapes his characters very beautifully, the songs in this movie are also very limited and are used only in places where they are required, this again is a very rare phenomenon in Tamil cinema. This is a must see for serious movie buffs.
