Although Having a Great Potential, a Predictable, Corny and Moralist Conclusion
25 December 2004
Roy Waller (Nicolas Cage) is a paranoid con man, having agoraphobia and many nervous tics. His partner is the ambitious Frank Mercer (Sam Rockwell), who wants to be as rich as Roy is. When the pills of Roy finish, Frank recommends Roy to visit Dr. Klein (Bruce Altman), a psychiatric who could give Roy a prescription for buying his medication. Through Dr. Klein's advice, Roy decides to meet his unknown fourteen years old daughter Angela (Alison Lohman), who changes the life of Roy. "Matchstick Men" is an overrated story with a good but very predictable plot point. My son and I "guessed" what would happen since the beginning of the story. Although having a great potential, with Nicolas Cage and Alison Lohman having magnificent performances and chemistry, after the twist, the story becomes corny and moralist. This commercial conclusion spoils what could be an excellent movie. My vote is six.
