Review of Nómadas

Nómadas (2001)
like a David Lynch movie directed by Aki Kaurismaki

This one , along with Fresnadillo´s "Intacto", is one of the most interesting Spanish films in recent times. It tells the story of four different characters: a mechanic who happens to be a serial killer, a depressive but astonishingly beautiful hostess, and two young offenders. although I do not want to give too much away of the plot, their fates are linked in quite violent and unexpected ways. The best thing about this film is that the whole story is told through images, with very little dialogue. The visuals are both lo-fi and stylized, giving the film a peculiar sense of unreality, in a mental space between daydream and nightmare. It is also very violent at times, although it is more disturbing than disgusting. If you like recent avant-garde,unsettling masterpieces such as Kiyoshi Kurosawa´s "Cure" or Gaspar Noe´s "Seul contre tous" you should watch it.This is like a David Lynch movie directed by Aki Kaurismaki with a Portishead song ( yes, that good)
