Four months of horror releases down, eight to go! With our 2024 Horror Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the other horror movies we can’t wait to check out this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they’re likely to show up at some point in 2024. Here we go:

Remember how Liam Neeson, at one point in his career, decided he would play only action heroes and how most of his recent characters were basically Bryan Mills from Taken in a different context? Well, it seems that another acting legend has chosen the same path, as Oscar-winner Russell Crowe is once again going to play an exorcist in the upcoming movie The Exorcism, which is set to be released on June 7, 2024. Now, the first official trailer for the movie has been released and we are going to show it to you below.
Now, our introduction was – in case you do not know – like this because Russel Crowe starred as an exorcist in the 2023 movie The Pope’s Exorcist, which – believe it or not – has absolutely no connection to The Exorcism. It seems that Crowe liked the previous role so he decided to reprise it but in a completely unrelated movie.

Before I ever saw William Friedkin's classic horror film "The Exorcist," my mother gleefully shared with me all of the horrific urban legends and unexplained mysteries that surrounded the film's production. She believed, as do countless others, that "The Exorcist" was one of many cursed films. The face of a possessed Regan MacNeil was terrifying, to be sure, but movie magic meant to scare me couldn't hold a candle to the inexplicable dread that had me convinced filmmakers daring to tell this story made them a target for actual evil. While I'm old enough now to know better than to believe in cursed films, it's still a fascinating rabbit hole to fall into. Hell, the horror movie streaming app Shudder even has a two-season documentary series called, you guessed it, "Cursed Films" discussing cinema's most controversial and conspiracy-surrounded film sets. Now, a new narrative horror film is dabbling in the world of cursed films,...

It may not have been his plan, but Russell Crowe is capitalizing on the return of the iconic “The Exorcist” franchise with separate standalone religious horror films “The Exorcism,” out June 7, and 2023’s “The Pope’s Exorcist.”
Crowe leads Joshua John Miller’s “The Exorcism” as an actor facing demons — maybe literal ones. Consider it a meta twist: The film centers on Anthony Miller (Crowe), a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.
The buzzy cast includes Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, David Hyde Pierce, Josh Warren, Adrian Pasdar, and Tracey Bonner.
Director Miller co-wrote the script with M.A. Fortin. “The Exorcism” marks Miller and Fortin’s second feature, after the 2015 horror comedy “The Final Girls.” They also co-created the...

Vertical has acquired North American rights to the horror film “The Exorcism,” starring Oscar winner Russell Crowe. It will be released this summer.
If this sounds vaguely familiar, that’s because Crowe also starred in an exorcism movie last year, the underrated “The Pope’s Exorcist.”
The new film follows Anthony Miller (Crowe), “a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film.” His estranged daughter (Ryan Simpkins) then starts to wonder if he’s slipped back into his addict past or if there’s something more supernatural at work.
“The Exorcism” was directed and co-written (with M.A. Fortin) by Joshua John Miller, who started his career as an actor (one of his first roles was as the little vampire kid in Kathryn Bigelow’s classic “Near Dark”). His father Jason Miller portrayed Father Damien Karras in “The Exorcist,” while his mother Susan Bernard appeared in “Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!...

While we anxiously await news of The Pope’s Exorcist 2, Russell Crowe will deal with some more demons in The Exorcism.
Update, 23 April: On the official Film Distributor’s Association release calendar, The Georgetown Project is listed for release on 7 June, courtesy of Vertigo Releasing. Grief is a common thread in many horror films. It often plays a minor role in the film, or as you'll see from our list, grief lies at the heart of a film's emotional core. It drives the story forward and grounds the character(s) in realism when spooky things start to happen. In dealing with the supernatural, the occult, a masked killer, or any manner of other genre foes, the protagonists learn how to finally process their grief and slay their demons. The external forces are sometimes the least of their worries.
For the sake of our list, we take a look at grief as a direct response to death. Grief, as we know, can result from any sort of loss, from the death of a pet to a lost friendship. Below, we picked through decades of films to compile the 14 best titles depicting grief, each possessing a mood and approach all their own.

Film journalists, critics, directors, and more are showing support for writer-actress-filmmaker Amy Seimetz on social media after news surfaced she has an open restraining order against “Primer” and “Upstream Color” director Shane Carruth. Seimetz starred opposite Carruth in “Upstream Color” and the two had a relationship that ended in 2018. Seimetz filed for the restraining order against Carruth on June 12, citing years of emotional and physical abuse. One alleged incident that occurred at a hotel in 2016 found Carruth strangling Seimetz until it was hard for her to breathe.
Seimetz’s restraining order gained visibility on social media after Carruth tweeted an image of the “Upstream Color” soundtrack on vinyl with part of the restraining order document sticking out from underneath it. The photo’s timing has led many people in the film community to wonder if Carruth is trying to take attention away from the release of Seimetz’s acclaimed new film “She Dies Tomorrow,...

Susan Bernard, the 1960s cult movie actress who would go on to oversee her father’s iconic archive of Marilyn Monroe photographs and see the son she had with actor Jason Miller, Joshua John Miller, become a successful TV producer in his own right, died unexpectedly at her home in L.A.’s Hancock Park neighborhood Friday. She was 71.
According to family spokesperson Siri Garber, Bernard died suddenly of an apparent heart attack.
Best remembered for her role in Russ Meyer’s 1965 cult epic Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Rose McGowan shifted gears from actor to filmmaker years ago, and while she has yet to make her first feature, she’s already one of the decade’s most audacious feminist voices. Her victimization at the hands of Harvey Weinstein, and a willingness to speak out about pervasive sexism throughout the the film industry, is at the heart of a massive reckoning. For McGowan, however, it’s business as usual. Her outspoken brand of radical feminism may have been marginalized a few weeks ago, but in the wake of the Weinstein scandal, her rage defines the zeitgeist.
On Thursday, Twitter temporarily pulled the plug on McGowan’s account as she ramped up her accusations against male Hollywood executives. The company claimed that she had shared a phone number of an accused predator, violating its terms of service. It didn’t matter: As anger with an oppressive system reached fever pitch,...

Spoofaway Camp: Strauss-Schulson’s Playful Mash-up Takes a Tumble On You
Director Todd Strauss-Schulson, whose last feature was A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011) returns with The Final Girls, an entertaining surprise of sorts as a playful riff on early 80s slasher tropes as it borrows the cosmic charms at play in classic titles like Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo (1984) and The Wizard of Oz (1939).
With a talented young cast and plenty of boisterous energy, Strauss-Schulson manages to instill a thread of sentimentality in this generally comedic feature, and ironically makes us care more for its characters than the films it pays homage to actually manage. Those looking for genre thrills will most likely be disappointed, and its eventual outcome is a bit too hoary despite its enjoyable cuteness from screenwriters M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller (the team who wrote Rose McGowan’s 2014 short film Dawn,...

Rose McGowan has, over the course of her career, become a recognisable name both in film for her work in features such as Planet Terror and Jawbreakers, and television for her work in shows such as Charmed. The 2014 Sundance Film Festival, however, saw McGowan step behind the camera for the first time, as she unveiled her directorial debut short film.

Rose McGowan has long been an indie darling. From her first major role in Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation to her two hander in Death Proof and Planet Terror, she's generally played outside Hollywood expectations. Of late, McGowan has made a splash by speaking out against the sexism in Hollywood and she's so fed up with the entire thing she's decided to mostly leave acting behind and step behind the camera to tell the stories that are important to her and her debut, the short film Dawn which debuted at Sundance last year, certainly got people talking.

Dawn (Tara Barr) is a quiet young teenager living in Kennedy era America who longs for something or someone to free her from her sheltered life. When she strikes up an innocent flirtation with the boy who works at her local gas station (Reiley McClendon), she thinks that he is perhaps the answer to her teenage dreams. Though when she invites the boy and his friends into her otherwise cloistered world, she gets a lot more than she bargained for. The Final Girls is one of those films that’s so hard to classify, because it’s got a little something for everyone. First and foremost, horror fans are going to have a blast with M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller’s super-self-referential screenplay that captures genre geekdom and pokes fun at Every 80s horror cliche imaginable. Mainstream audience aren’t forgotten either, as a hilarious cast of talented actors put comedy first, while gory kill-sequences are kept at an acceptable minimum.
And of course, we can’t forget about the true cinema fans, as director Todd Strauss-Schulson’s killer attention to ambitious detail somehow comes together like an insanely metaphysical nightmare that transcends so many wild and crazy levels. Trust me, you’ve never seen a slasher film like The Final Girls, and that’s what makes this movie such a riotous take on horror norms gone sexily wrong.

The Final Girls deals with one of my favorite kinds of movies: the camp classic. You know, the "so bad they're good" movies. The ones where people come together at midnight screenings, know all the lines, and dress up in costume. Here, we have a very specific kind of camp classic -- slasher films. Over the top acting. Buckets upon buckets of blood. Gratuitous nudity. It's all a lot of fun to watch if done in a properly, incompetent way, but that's the thing. The movies we are dealing with are most certainly rated R movies. So, why one earth did they shoot this for a PG-13c None of that opening is to say this is a bad movie. Not at all. I liked a lot of it, actually. But the film wants to have fun with all the tropes of these kinds of movies, but is afraid to actually show any of it.

Out of the 66 short film line-up (selected among 8,161 submissions) we find actress Rose McGowan move behind the camera for her directing debut (Dawn), we have Ain’t Them Bodies Saints producer Toby Halbrooks shovel out Dig (see pic above) and Todd Rohal (The Guatemalan Handshake) returns to the fest in between features with Rat Pack Rat. Filmmaker Magazine New Faces of Independent Film director Dean Fleischer-Camp rolls up his shirt sleeves with Catherine, Matthew Lessner returns to Park City with the helping hand Chapel Perilous while The Strange Ones (’11 accepted short) co-helmer Christopher Radcliff won’t be making a dissappearing act with Jonathan’s Chest. Finally docu feature-film helmer Lucy Walker moves into The Lion’s Mouth Opens. I’ll of course be covering several of these – look out for our coverage.
