The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. Conversely, Anika Noni Rose was not bumped up to the Lead Actress in a Play category, so that race will contain just four guaranteed nominees...

“I’m always waiting for something different, a different and new challenge,” reveals Anika Noni Rose. A worthy challenge arose in the form of Anton Chekhov, and the latest Broadway revival of his classic play “Uncle Vanya.” The actress had never performed in a Chekhov play before, but for her first Broadway role in 10 years, she “thought it was just time to do something for me that was going to be very different.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Rose portrays Yelena in the revival, who is wedded to the older and egotistical professor Serebryakov (Alfred Molina). At their rural estate, the glamorous Yelena expresses boredom and begins to question whether her life choices have led her to the right destination. When Yelena agrees to help Sonia (Alison Pill) discover if her feelings for Astrov (William Jackson Harper) are reciprocated, she unknowingly unleashes a fiery passion in him which overwhelms the estate.

It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

Tipping their Stetsons to a passel of 1960s Spaghetti Westerns — everything from “A Fistful of Dollars” to “They Call Me Trinity” — and the sort of 1970s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, director-star Michael Jai White and co-star (and co-writer) Byron Keith Minns have cobbled together “Outlaw Johnny Black,” a fitfully funny but uncomfortably overlong entertainment best appreciated by movie buffs who share the pair’s affection for the genre tropes and stereotypes they seriocomically recycle.
Not nearly as free-wheeling and fleet-footed as “Black Dynamite,” the 2009 satirical comedy that cast White as a Shaft-like action hero, the new film nonetheless provides more than a few good laughs, even when it seems to be taking horse opera clichés a tad too respectfully, and showcases a fine cast of actors dedicated to both the silliness and the seriousness of the enterprise.

Disney's magical live-action reimagining of "The Little Mermaid" hit theaters in May, and now it's finally heading to streaming. The remake, which stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, was one of the most anticipated movies of the year, especially after unveiling its sprawling, full-length trailer during the 2023 Oscars. Its cast also includes Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.
Though live-action Disney remakes can sometimes be hit or miss, it seems the new "The Little Mermaid" has something everyone can enjoy (even adults who are fans of the iconic story). From exciting new songs to renditions of classics from the original 1989 movie, the rebooted movie breathes new life into a familiar tale that today's generation has fallen in love with - especially with Bailey at the forefront.

Olympia Ohanian is having a spectacular month. Weeks after her parents broke the exciting news that she's going to be a big sister, the 5-year-old received another surprise: a Halle Bailey Princess Ariel doll inspired by the live-action "The Little Mermaid" remake. "What is it?" Olympia asked as her parents, Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian, watched her unwrap the gift at the dinner table. "Mama and Papa wanted to get this for you," her dad replied. After looking the doll over once, Olympia's eyes lit up with delight.
"I've never had a mermaid doll before."
"Little Mermaid! Thank You, Daddy! Thank you!" Olympia shouted. As she clutched the doll between a Barbie-pink manicure - a perfect match for her "Encanto" princess dress - Olympia couldn't contain her excitement. Within seconds of opening the package, she let out an unintelligible shriek, jumping up and down enthusiastically to celebrate.

Splash Mountain, the Disneyland flume ride which has been criticized for racist and stereotyping related to its roots in the 1946 Disney film Song of the South, will officially close at the end of the day today to begin its renovation into an attraction based on the more modern film The Princess and the Frog. Walt Disney World closed its version of the ride in January.
According to Disneyland officials, the renovation project is expected to last more than a year. The re-imagined ride, which will be called Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, is scheduled to open in late 2024. When the attraction closed in Orlando earlier this year, Splash Mountain saw a record wait time of 220 minutes on its final day. It looks like there is a similar turnout at Disneyland today, with some reporting a 200-minute wait by 2 p.m.

The film also stars Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Javier Bardem as King Triton, with Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian the crab, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.

Disney princess dreams came true at the world premiere of "The Little Mermaid," as Halle Bailey, star of the new live-action remake, and Jodi Benson, lead of the original 1989 classic, united on the sea-blue carpet on May 8. A TikTok from the star-studded event captured a sweet moment where the two actors embraced one another and exchanged kind words before heading off to see the highly anticipated Disney film.
But before then, Benson spoke to "Entertainment Tonight" and shared nothing but praise for Bailey's "brilliant" performance as Ariel. "She doesn't need any advice from me," Benson laughed when asked if she helped Bailey prepare to become a real-life Disney princess. "I did get to meet her a few times and chat with her, and just to tell her how proud I was of her. But I love that she has a purity of heart and a pure spirit, and you...

We're ready to go under the sea for Disney's live-action "The Little Mermaid" movie. The film was first announced back in 2016 and details about it have been trickling in slowly ever since. After the Covid-19 pandemic slowed production, the movie is finally set to hit theaters this month and fans are eager to take it all in - including the movie's many differences from the original, like new songs and even some tweaks to original tracks fans have come to love.
The rebooted version of one of the original film's most iconic songs, "Part of Your World," dropped on April 26, and hearing how much emotion star Halle Bailey's vocals bring to the song will make you even more excited to hear the rest of the movie's new music. Just over a week later, on May 7, a snippet of another "Little Mermaid" original, "Kiss the Girl," was previewed during the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

For Halle Bailey, starring as Ariel in "The Little Mermaid" isn't just another box to check off her list of accomplishments - it's much bigger than that. The 22-year-old is making history as the first Black actor to play Ariel and the second to be crowned a Disney princess with her role in the forthcoming live-action film. She's well aware of the responsibility that comes with that.
"It's about time that a role like this is played by a Black woman, by somebody who is just a part of this beautiful community. We deserve to have images that look like us and to see ourselves in the media on big screens and everything," Bailey tells Popsugar. "So I'm just grateful that we're getting to see ourselves finally on such big projects."

At a world premiere of a new streaming series in Hollywood in February 2022, a castmember walked the carpet in front of Tcl Chinese Theatre wearing a bold, asymmetrical top paired with black flare-leg trousers. After fielding a journalist’s compliment, the actress responded with a brief explainer of why she picked the understated yet chic look.
“I wanted to look good, but not too good, you know? I’m not the lead,” offered the veteran actress, who appears in a handful of episodes but not all of the season’s full order. “It’s never a good idea to outshine the stars of the show.” That didn’t happen on the night in question, as her famous co-star turned up in a showstopping gown.

Paramount CEO Bob Bakish announced on Monday that Showtime’s cable network would be renamed to “Paramount+ With Showtime” while its streaming service would collapse into Paramount+, noting that the company “will divert investment away from areas that are underperforming and that account for less than 10 of our views. We have already begun conversations with our production partners about what content makes sense moving forward and which shows have franchise potential.”
