1. The Vikings (1958)

Not Rated | 116 min | Action, Adventure, History

A slave and a Viking prince fight for the love of a captive princess.

Director: Richard Fleischer | Stars: Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine, Janet Leigh

Votes: 15,701 | Gross: $7.00M

The definition of a Hollywood viking epic. Based on a novel, itself loosely based on Scandinavian legends. Through historicity is more or less thrown out of the window, there is certainly attempts at authenticity such as use of Swedish folktunes in the score, filming on location in Norway and replicating ships used by the vikings. Most of all it's a very fun film. The lead actors are clearly the time of their lives and there are some great setpieces.

2. When the Raven Flies (1984)

R | 109 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

An Irish man seeks vengeance against the vikings who killed his parents.

Director: Hrafn Gunnlaugsson | Stars: Jakob Þór Einarsson, Edda Björgvinsdóttir, Helgi Skúlason, Gotti Sigurdarson

Votes: 2,571

Something completely different. A classic of Icelandic and Swedish cinema. Yojimbo is reimagened as a viking saga, where the yakuza is replaced with Norweigan vikings in exile in Iceland. The film is rough and uneven, but the storytelling is great and there are some great performances. Especially Helgi Skulason stands out as the cheif viking Thord. There are images that you will never forget like bloody idols of the gods, piercing blue eyes leering through a helmet and vikings riding over a black beach in the fog. One of the more historicly accurate entries on the list. The final scene is one of the bleakest moments in cinema.

3. Shadow of the Raven (1988)

124 min | Adventure, Drama

Trausti returns to Iceland just in time to be entangled in a family feud over a stranded whale-cadaver. His mother (the family head) is mortally wounded and Grim kills Erikur; the other ... See full summary »

Director: Hrafn Gunnlaugsson | Stars: Reine Brynolfsson, Tinna Gunnlaugsdóttir, Egill Ólafsson, Sune Mangs

Probably the best viking film ever made. Tristian and Isolde is retold in Iceland at the end of the viking age. The imagery and music is beyond words. The epic landscapes of Iceland provides a nearly mythic backdrop for a blood feud between three clans. Like "When the raven flies" there are images that will never leave your memory, like the final showdown among the geysers.

4. The 13th Warrior (1999)

R | 102 min | Action, Adventure, History

42 Metascore

A man, having fallen in love with the wrong woman, is sent by the sultan himself on a diplomatic mission to a distant land as an ambassador. Stopping at a Viking village port to restock on supplies, he finds himself unwittingly embroiled in a quest to banish a mysterious threat in a distant Viking land.

Directors: John McTiernan, Michael Crichton | Stars: Antonio Banderas, Diane Venora, Dennis Storhøi, Vladimir Kulich

Votes: 132,159 | Gross: $32.70M

Althrough ridiculous at times and dubious with history, this retelling of Beowulf certainly has it's charm and an amazing score. Certainly a film that takes refuge in audacity. Suspicously few Scandinavian actors appear in the film, through Swedish acting legend Sven Wolter plays the king of the Norsemen. That certainly won over a few Scandinavians.

5. Valhalla Rising (2009)

Not Rated | 93 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

61 Metascore

Forced for some time to be a fighting slave, a pagan warrior escapes his captors with a boy and joins a group of Crusaders on their quest to the Holy Land.

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Maarten Stevenson, Alexander Morton, Stewart Porter

Votes: 63,669 | Gross: $0.02M

More symbolic than historical, "Valhalla Rising" is polarizing to say the least. Some hate it, others love it and some are just saying "meh". But if you are in for a Norse take on "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" and trippy Scottish scenery you are in for a treat. Suggestive from beginning to the end, the film is actually quite influential in the viking genre. The director imagened the vikings as Mad Max-esque vikings, a look which has been nabbed from a great deal of viking films since like "Hammer of the Gods", "The Berserkers", "Norsemen - A Viking Saga" and even history channels "Vikings". These films even picked up the rugged and heavily contrasted look of "Valhalla Rising".

6. Hammer of the Gods (2013)

R | 99 min | Action, Horror

44 Metascore

A young man transforms into a brutal warrior as he travels the unforgiving landscape in search of his long lost brother, Hakan the Ferocious, whose people are relying on him to restore order to their kingdom.

Director: Farren Blackburn | Stars: Charlie Bewley, Alexandra Dowling, Clive Standen, James Cosmo

Votes: 8,258 | Gross: $0.00M

If "Valhalla Rising" was less subtle action film, it would probably be "Hammer of the Gods". It's really weird at times, with strange black knights(?) Danish warlord Ivar the Boneless being portrayed as overweight pedophile and people start fighting their allies for no good reason. Can't really recommend. Someone casting "Vikings" must have seen this because both actors Clive Standen and Ivan Kaye later got cast in the show. Amusingly, Kaye was casted as king Ælla, famous for being killed by Ivar the Boneless.

7. Vikings (2013–2020)

TV-MA | 45 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Vikings transports us to the brutal and mysterious world of Ragnar Lothbrok, a Viking warrior and farmer who yearns to explore--and raid--the distant shores across the ocean.

Stars: Katheryn Winnick, Gustaf Skarsgård, Alexander Ludwig, Georgia Hirst

Votes: 583,395

As far as history goes, this show zig-zags between really good and aweful. But it's strength lies in the drama, great acting great cinematography. A more or less loose retelling of several Norse legends, sometimes the show misses oppurtunities for some great storytelling and more drama. But the story is engaging and some spooky apperances of the Norse gods. Features some amazing music with a heavy mix of modern instruments and instruments used in the viking age. Recommended.

8. The Last Kingdom (2015–2023)

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Drama, History

As Alfred the Great defends his kingdom from Norse invaders, Uhtred--born a Saxon but raised by Vikings--seeks to claim his ancestral birthright.

Stars: Alexander Dreymon, Eliza Butterworth, Arnas Fedaravicius, Mark Rowley

Votes: 165,866

The poor man's version of "Vikings", slightly more historicly accurate, through a farcry from the extreamly well researched books it's based on. At best "The Last Kingdom" is a solid drama with some fun action, at worst frustratingly bad because you know it can be really good at times. A bonus point goes for casting actual Scandinavians as 95% of the viking characters.

9. Valhalla (1986)

89 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

Through Loki's treachery, two children in the Viking age find themselves spirited away into the world of Norse Mythology.

Directors: Peter Madsen, Jeffrey J. Varab | Stars: Dick Kaysø, Preben Kristensen, Laura Bro, Marie Ingerslev

Votes: 2,539

A great Danish film about the adventures of two children as they enter the service of the thunder god Thor. With nice, traditional animation and an amazing score, "Valhalla" is based on the equally amazing comic books. It's probably the most faithful adaptation of Norse mythology ever put on film. Recommended.

10. Outlander (2008)

R | 115 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

40 Metascore

During the reign of the Vikings, Kainan, a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry.

Director: Howard McCain | Stars: Jim Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Ron Perlman, Jack Huston

Votes: 78,719 | Gross: $0.16M

Not an amazing film, but pretty entertaining. Suprisingly accurate considering the kind of film it is. Not a bad film to watch to relax after work. Loosely based on Beowulf

11. Beowulf (2007)

PG-13 | 115 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

59 Metascore

The warrior Beowulf must fight and defeat the monster Grendel, who is terrorizing Denmark, then Grendel's Mother, who begins killing out of revenge.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Ray Winstone, Crispin Glover, Angelina Jolie, Robin Wright

Votes: 174,193 | Gross: $82.16M

A really ugly and loud film. Althrough it follows the poem to a certain degree, it fails being engading is way too over the top. It's subversions of the Beowulf story falls really flat. Not recommened, but some of the music is great.

12. Beowulf & Grendel (2005)

R | 103 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

53 Metascore

In Denmark, during the 6th century, Danish king Hrothgar and his warriors kill a troll whose son, Grendel, vows revenge.

Director: Sturla Gunnarsson | Stars: Hringur Ingvarsson, Spencer Wilding, Stellan Skarsgård, Ingvar Sigurdsson

Votes: 18,601 | Gross: $0.07M

Another Beowulf, this time with Iceland standing in for Denmark and Götaland (wait what?). Jokes aside, certainly a unique in it's take on Beowulf. As far as costumes go, it's actually very accurate to the Vendel age (the time before the viking age) and is a pretty interesting story. Gerad Butler is certainly in his right element as a viking. The problem is that (like 2007 Beowulf), all the famous film adaptations of Beowulf are subversions or reimagenings of the story. Most people are not that familiar with the epic poem (I can recommend Julian Glover's amazing recording for those who want to explore it). Therefore, any subversion falls a bit flat as the trope is unbuilt.

13. Hellsaga (2017)

13 min | Short, Adventure, Drama

A young warrior seeks the wisdom of the gods.

Director: Viking Almquist | Stars: Viking Almquist, Alva Markelius, Paula Ternström, Ola Höök

Yet to be released short film. Appearently it's closely based on Norse mythology and shot on the island of Fårö, where Ingmar Bergman shot most of his films.

14. Tumult (2012)

13 min | Short, Action, Comedy

A tribe of Norse warriors traipse across a barren land after battle. Bloodied and wounded, their chief is near death. He is about to hand over power to his son when an army of a completely different kind descends upon them.

Director: Johnny Barrington | Stars: Jean-Marc Chautems, Eileen Dunwoodie, Gísli Örn Garðarsson, Howard Lee

Votes: 145

Can't recommend this enough. Just watch it.

15. Viking (2016)

Not Rated | 142 min | Action, Drama, History

Director: Andrey Kravchuk | Stars: Danila Kozlovskiy, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Maksim Sukhanov, Igor Petrenko

Votes: 5,067

I have yet to see this film, but the trailer has some great imagery. Looks slightly more historicly accurate than the average viking film. One of the only films to deal with the Norsemen in what was to be Russia.

16. Här kommer bärsärkarna (1965)

99 min | Adventure, Comedy

The viking chief Hjorvard has two wild sons, Glum and Garm, both notorious berserkers.

Director: Arne Mattsson | Stars: Carl-Gustaf Lindstedt, Dirch Passer, Åke Söderblom, Nils Hallberg

17. Viking: The Berserkers (2014)

In Dark Ages Britain, a group of young Saxons are captured by a clan of fearsome Viking warriors and used as prey in a ritualistic manhunt.

Director: Antony Smith | Stars: Sol Heras, Douglas Russell, Amber Jean Rowan, Simon Armstrong

Votes: 672

So bad that it's good. Mostly the costumes and weapons are pretty accurate, but at other things... Eh, not so much. There are some near references to Norse legends, but the reason to watch this film is the same as watching Troll 2 or The Room. A pre-fame role for Anya Taylor-Joy, who is a great actress, which she will probably be teased about in a talk-show 10 years from now.

A very mixed bag. Based on real events about the conversion of Iceland and Norway to christianity. Loaded with references to to the sagas, some great images and some great performances, the film falls flat due to being butchered in the editing. The version to watch is the mini-series which really tells the story as it's meant to. The action scenes in all versions are terrible and some of the other performances are bad in many different ways. Worth seeing, but not a must see.

Fun, but completely braindead film loosely based on a real siege. King John employs Danish vikings (but for some reason their leader has a latin name) to root out rebels in return from keeping christianity out of Denmark. This takes place in the 13th century and Denmark was converted (officially atleast) in th 10th century. So there would most certainly not being any people being openly pagan at that time.
