Magic Camp (2020)
6/10
An Enjoyable Diversion with a Known Curse
2 March 2024
Families and lovers of vintage camp movies will enjoy the lighthearted and endearing "Magic Camp" (2020). It doesn't create anything new, but it does offer heartfelt yet dependable enjoyment.

With a down-on-his-luck magician returning to his childhood camp to mentor a group of misfit kids, the movie tells a well-known underdog story. Though the storylines are predictable, they are warmly and humorously told. From the eager but awkward counselor Andy (Adam Devine) to the varied assortment of campers, each with their own distinct personalities and magic acts, the cast is packed of endearing characters. With its many dumb jokes and slapstick humor, the movie is ideal for younger viewers and those seeking a lighter viewing experience.

Illusions and magic tricks evoke childish amazement in viewers, inspiring them to learn how to pull a simple card trick or even pull a rabbit out of a hat. "Magic Camp" is a comedy, but it also quietly conveys important lessons about camaraderie, overcoming obstacles, and self-belief.

This movie might not be for you if you're searching for a unique or ground-breaking tale. There are not many surprises along the way since the plot develops in a rather predictable fashion. The film has a clean visual aesthetic, but the magic trick special effects are a little lackluster, especially for a Disney movie.
