The Beyond (2017)
4/10
Interesting.

If you like a good scifi film you'll want to watch this...but really an 'ok' movie. Almost like a mashup of interstellar and transit (both better movies) but with some originality. Again, interesting but not great. Even a bit hard to follow at times in the middle.

Ignore the haters, I actually really liked it!

Similar to other movies I like in that it did take a little bit of time to pick up (similar to 'Captain Phillips' and how the movie begins slow and then picks up with the action). For that reason, if you are ok with that you will love this. If you're the kind of person that wants crazy intense action from scene one, this isn't for you. The beginning is intriguing. It makes you wonder, but then all crap breaks lose real fast. From that point on, a LOT of questions and doubts start popping up about the realism and stuff...but if you've read the other reviews eventually the 'twist' comes. Honestly, I was REALLY surprised. I didn't see it coming at all. Plus, when the 'twist' does happen all of a sudden all of the earlier "this is unrealistic" thoughts come back to you with a vengeance, and all of a sudden everything you thought was stupid blows your mind. This one left me thinking about it for a full day. I was pleasantly surprised, as I had noticed its low ratings beforehand. Worth a watch, and for me, worth a good 8 stars (almost did 9 but there were a few things in the acting that weren't great, particularly the older of the two daughters, dang, even her haircut was awful). Anyways, I definitely recommend it!

Taking Earth (2017)

Good Idea, Terrible Execution
16 September 2018
Honestly, if the writer had been able to sell his ideas to a bigger company it could've turned out pretty good. The general idea was actually interesting and locked me in early on. After that though, all down hill. Terrible acting. The romance doesn't even make sense (usually your thinking 'Oh I hope he gets the girl' but here you're just wondering why she is even in the movie at all). The effects were ok, but there is just so much unexplained, like where the character is from, why they want to kill him, why they allowed the son to come to earth and not just blow the planet up, where are the aliens from, how did they find him on earth, how is the acting so freaking bad, they didn't give ANY information about the 'epidemic' that happened (again, good idea but absolutely terrible execution), and so on and so forth. Give it to Spielberg and see if he can resurrect the idea, but honestly unless your trying to entertain your twelve year old it's not worth putting on the TV.

Ignore the mud-slinging, actually a really good film.

Yes, there are a few moments when the acting leaves something to be desired (though the main three protagonists are actually pretty good, especially the girl). The secondary characters aren't terrible, but not great either. The special effects were pretty good. It was low budget and a few scenes show that, but all things considered it's easy to look past. Now, the real review point. The plot may seem a little odd at first, but as the story unravels it slowly peaks your interest more and more. My favorite part is at the very end (don't worry, no spoilers). The end just shows us the pointlessness of war and how stupid humans can be sometimes. It's actually a pretty deep meaning when you think about it. My advice? Give it a shot, especially if you like movies that have a lot of deeper meaning. Though not my favorite movie, it is certainly one that I enjoyed. If it seems slow at first, just ride it out a little bit. It gets better and better, and at the very end the whole 'deep meaning' comes out and makes the movie so much more interesting and meaningful. I actually liked it enough that I'm going to see if this producer has any more films out.
