The Wheel of Time (2021)
Not bad.
I sticked to it to the end and really enjoyed it. Generally enjoyed the casting although they are all very young actors except for Rosamund and it does show. I think they will develop into the roles well in further series.( Hoping there are further series). Bit of over reach to emphasise some relationships some of which were pointless. Was it to appease a lobby? You have to wonder.
Very good world building and scenery. There were a few episodes and elements that I thought could have been thought out better. Overall I liked it enough to overlook these issues.
The Watch (2020)
Mildly entertaining but crippled by LGBT propaganda.
Yes not sure how they can get away by peddling this as Pratchett. I did find it mildly entertaining so 2 stars from me. -8 for the woke nonsense and the way the narrative was consequently corrupted.
New Amsterdam (2018)
fantasy for the naive or terrible joke- you decide?
This show has no grounding in reality. I have no idea why anyone would want to watch it. Firing a whole department without any contingency imagine it happened at your place of work. I wonder how many patients died that day. Away from the Patch Adams-esque fantasy they try to square up to the times by a blatant racist black doctor who does not date white woman. Imagine it was the other way round the show would have been taken off the air in seconds. What a farce. I wonder how old the writers are? I'm getting off this train before the insults to my intelligence and liberal brainwashing gets any worse. Go elsewhere for entertainment folks or leave your brain at the door...
The Man in the High Castle: The New Colossus (2018)
It's all downhill from here
I haven't found this series as gripping at all as the last few. My guess is there's a new crew onboard and they're running out of storylines. This episode especially gets a bit desperate when all of a sudden characters come out as gay who had no such inclination before. Old storylines are starting to be recycled. And now this desperate stab. Will be looking for a new series from now on. What a pity.
Gods of Egypt (2016)
Not bad
It's good fun for what it is really. Not bad at all. Good special effects and a decent story line. Those looking for game of thrones can head off somewhere else - this is not it.
Lost in Space (2018)
All hail the all powerful, omnipresent antagonist
Warning- spoilers!
I had high hopes for this show as it presented a modern genre with fantastic potential and initially confronted the heroes with complex and wonderful challenges. It's also unique in that it's family friendly and it's almost impossible to find anything else this thrilling that doesn't include unnecessary profanity and swearing. My main gripe is that suspension of disbelief is utterly shattered in the character of Dr. Smith/June Harris. Lost in space is not alone in the deployment of such a desperate tactic to keep tension but it utterly fails frustrating the viewer. I experienced the same when watching the new BBC Poldark series. The antagonist always seems to be everywhere. They are always just in time to exploit everyone's weakest moment. Always waiting just around the corner at the right time. Their plans play out with divine efficiency while everyone else fumbles. Dr Smith is always supernaturally in the right place at the right time with matching smugness to ruin everyone's day. With such a vast array of opposing forces available to challenge the protagonists it seems desperate that the writers and directors reverted to such a cheap gimmick and instead of keeping tension it breaks suspension of disbelief. It's much easier to believe in aliens and far- off planets than the godlike Smith whose plans and skills never fail and who hears and sees all things. For this reason only 5 stars.
Powers: Level 13 (2015)
Just awful
I've humoured this show's clumsy drama for 8 episodes but the opening moments of this episode was just the nail in the coffin. Obviously realising that killing Wolfe would be the end to an already incredibly thin story line Christian comes up with the numpty brain plan to try and arrest the harmless-as-hamster Johnny Royalle. Because that would sort the world out! It's not even possible to buy into Christian's persona as a jaded anti-hero anymore after this. All he is is a fluff head without a story. Not being able to kill the "Joker ala Batman" so we can have one more boring story to tell has been done to death and this was a cop-out by the writers to put another stringy episode out there. Not impressed. This was the last episode of Powers I'll watch- Pity because I felt it had potential.
Warcraft (2016)
Loved it. Brought so many memories back!
Warning Spoilers!!!!
Saw it this past weekend. Really loved it to bits. Sure it's not going to fulfil your plot expectations if you're expecting "Tinker, Tailor,Soldier Spy" but it checks all the boxes of a half decent narrative and fantastic art and lore.
There's so much fan expectations to be met so I'm really surprised they pulled it off this well. It also sets the stage well for future films which I'll be eager to see at the Cinema. This is really something to experience on the big screen (although I prefer 2D to see more detail).
It's really a great experience all way through and at no point was I getting bored or annoyed with any character- if fact when the film was done I was like "What? Already? I want More!" which to me is a sign of success.
That said and the reason I'm not giving it 10 stars outright is that for me personally I would have preferred if the plot around Medivh's turning to the Fell was better conceived. How was he corrupted and why did he hide it so well? Was it a split-personality thing? We get no answer but to "avoid isolation" as his dying words. That together with a smidgen of more humour would do well in a next iteration. There is a lot of good humour in the Warcraft universe and I think they can capitalise on that a bit more.
All in all a great film - I want more!
