The Wisher (2002)
I will wish that....
The story line is this movie is pretty straight-forward. Nothing that you would get lost in, or gets too terribly twisted. However, what I am wondering is why is that girl (Mary) is always in the same type of nightie and always wear that lacy camisole. And I noted (dear director and producer) that she is always bra-less. C'mon did you all have to stoop so low to sell the movie? Not that she is well endowed or shows any of it... but was that intentional to draw an audience? The acting is not superb but considering a young cast, but the scenes is pretty boring throughout. Story drags on to kill time in many areas. And the computer download scene of 200MB 3-part video downloads in like 3 seconds? Supporting cast roles are minimal. If there is one thing an audience will learn, it's not about wishing. It's about subliminal messages and no, it's just not about embedded logos or symbols. It can be sounds too.
Colditz (2005)
War Movie with a love story
This movie is much like what Pearl Harbour did to Tora, Tora, Tora (the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbour). It's a story with love interwoven among prisoner of wars. If you are looking for a good prison escape war movie, you'd be disappointed as they are loop holes all over. I was attracted by the trailer that said that "an escape from the tightest security prison" And if you are hoping for a full love story, it doesn't make it either. The plot is also shallow. However, the cinematography is excellent. I like the way it was filmed: the scenes in the prison was often in greyish-brownish tones and the military intelligence headquarters in brighter colours. Switching around the locations using this technique kept me interested all the time. The ending could have been better but is rather abrupt. I'd watch it again, if I was someone looking for a love story in war time setting. The trailer shown could be better. And in the opening scenes - a line "an officer and gentleman" was used. It was certainly not what it was meant to be.
Samsara (2001)
Astounding Lesson on Life
Samsara is not your usual show. I will not attempt to tell the story here as many others have. But certainly, this is one movie that you need to have the time to calm down (perhaps in the quiet of the night) and watch it by yourself. It's not about emotions, it's not about the scandals and certainly not the sex scenes either. It's all about life, from a monk's view) and this show pulls it off well. Some parts get a bit slow but if you enjoy majestic splendour in the vastness of the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, this is one show you will enjoy. A little knowledge about the life of a Buddhist monk will help but it's not necessary. It may launch you to read all about it. Samsara is not just worth watching, it's just worth buying and leaving it on your video collection shelf for it talks about our inner selves, and attempts an answer at it. Leave your ego and personal philosophy about life outside your body when you hit that "Play" button on the videotape or DVD.
Scenes of the Crime (2001)
"Phone Booth" in a Truck
This show is the "truck" (van) version of the later show called "Phone Booth". A good portion of the film is filmed inside the truck. Casual driver gets involved and is the middle person in between 2 big time mob gangs. Either way, it's the devil or the deep blue sea for him. He would be lucky to walk away with his life. And most of the action is how they act out the "black spy versus white spy" (from MAD magazine) kind of moves. You'd be dying to find out how the entire event is resolved, and this is what makes it interesting to hang on. But watch it to the end! A bit of panties action by the operator of the deli to her husband. If you are hoping for more than just seeing a pair of lacy panties, you'd be disappointed. Story line is fine but can get confusing with all the mob names thrown around all over.
Counter Measures (1998)
Another enemy sub-takeover movie
Story of an ex-Navy Seal who is now a combat medical officer assigned to a state of the art Russian sub with a nurse. This is to answer a call for help set off by a dying member of the original crew. The sub has been overtaken by terrorists who are bent on destruction. So we see the duo try and gain control back. And this happens with the fear of the US Naval Forces is about to unleashing everything it has got on the terrorist sub to prevent it from launching its arsenal. Be careful of the early explicit sexual scene in the first quarter of the movie. A couple of unexplained scenes towards the end. Watch it when you have the time. Nothing to miss out even if you let the show run while you go get yourself a cup of coffee: slow moving.
Hangman's Curse (2003)
Watchable
The movie starts up rather haphazardly and one is left wondering what is happening especially with a drug bust. The movie attempts a twist and turn but gives quite a number of clues away.
Great story of how students relate to each other - the bullies and the sports group. A few die violently due to strange causes; but all with a hangman graphic drawn in their locker. Police and security is unable to solve the case.
Enter a family of private investigators who live in a RV (recreational vehicle - a high end caravan) and take over the case. The sinister plot is unveiled complete with pentagrams and devil worship/voodoo stuff. A clear explanation to all this as the plot is unveiled.
If you watch the trailer, it gives away almost everything there. So don't watch the trailer on the DVD before the movie.
Watchable on that Sunday afternoon if you are not doing anything else. It's rated M 15+ here in Australia, probably because of a few scary, creepy scenes.
Steel Sharks (1997)
Worthwhile Action
The movie starts very slow but don't judge the movie by its initial 40 minutes at least. Story line is pretty straight forward and easy to watch. The sequences in the submarine "hunter and hunted" scenes in the second half of the movie are excellent. Acting improves all the way in the movie. You will be gripping at your arm rest to know how it will end. Somehow it seems like acting school movie for both producers and actor/actresses. But the outcome is certainly watchable. Underwater filming of the subs in motion is commendable. And I feel the end scene could have been something more glamorous and looks like the film budget hit the wall here!
