I'm a Derry girl

A fun and heartwarming episode as the whole of Derry celebrates the IRA ceasefire and the visit of the Clinton's. Such a lovely group of actors, the chemistry is undeniable.

He's Back
Hitchcoc2 October 2023
When the IRA calls a ceasefire, it is major news all over the world. So much so, that Bill Clinton goes to Derry to make an inspirational. The girls have been forbidden to go to the speech, but, of course, skip school to see it. James's mother shows up. She is an awful person. She is there to bring James back so he can work for her for nothing in a new business. So James will be out of the group. Meanwhile Granda goes with his friends to find the Clinton's hideout in a remote town. The problem is Clinton and his entourage would never go to a place. The use a short wave radio to pick up clues as to the President's whereabouts. The final scene is probably the most touching of the series thus far.

Last of the Derry Wine?

Warning: Spoilers
So what in blazes just happened here?

I've been really enjoying this show for the last two seasons for all the reasons you've probably read about already - great characters, wonderful performances by all the cast, terrific writing etc. But in this episode, all that was driven off a cliff. So first, the story of James's mother returning to take him back to England is shoddy. The girls have done nothing but treat him like crap for the show's entire run, then suddenly they're devastated he's leaving. I guess they wanted to do a "we're mean but deep down we love you" moment so common in American shows, but there's no substance to it here. It's just so random, it doesn't make sense. And James changing his mind and coming back is just nonsense. If you're an adult writing this, it's an adorable moment, but a teenager in this situation - having your life turned upside-down and being sent to live in the craziest place on earth - would do anything to get out. (Full disclosure: I'm speaking from experience here). But it's the story of the three old guys trying to find the Clintons that really takes the biscuit. I can't have been the only one watching this thinking "Last of The Summer Wine", can I? It's so daft, and not in the good way that this show used to excel. (For those of you outside the U.K., LOTSW was a BBC sitcom that ran for about 40 years and was basically about three old guys in a Yorkshire village who got up to ridiculous capers each week.) The only explanation I can come up with for such a weak effort is they wanted the season finale to pack some kind of emotional punch that might bag them a few awards. Sadly, they failed so miserably I don't think I'll be returning for the third season we were ominously warned about as the end credits rolled.
