Amazon MGM Studios is doubling down on its original film business.
The studio arrives at MIPCOM Cannes with nearly all its eggs in Earth Abide‘s basket, an original series starring Alexander Ludwig (Vikings) and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark). The show is a post-apocalyptic tale, based on George R. Stewart’s 1949 novel, about the fall of civilization from deadly disease — which Chris Ottinger, head of worldwide distribution, Amazon MGM Studios, says represents “a lot of the feeling of now, when it’s a very strange time to be on this earth.”
The executive sat down with The Hollywood Reporter in Cannes to discuss the studio’s slate of shows and films getting their distribution launch at MIPCOM including the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Accountant 2 and the sequel to A Simple Favor.

The deal that is expected to install Skydance chief David Ellison as chairman, CEO and hopefully savior of Paramount Global is a labyrinth of entities, trusts and transactions. Also potentially complicated, assuming the deal closes sometime next year, is the question of control.
Skydance sources say 41-year-old David will select the board and run things entirely independent of his father, Larry Ellison, also known as the world’s fifth-richest man, worth an estimated $176 billion, per Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index tally on Sept. 18. But Larry, 80, will own the controlling shares. Having previously bestowed billions on David and his sister, Megan, Larry has now backed his son to the tune of $6 billion as David pursued his dream of running a legacy studio.
What role, if any, Larry will play at the new Paramount is not clear. But given his track record of significant Maga activity, there is certain to be scrutiny — though...

When the TV series based on the popular video game franchise Twisted Metal made its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in July, it quickly became one of Peacock’s top five original series, racking up 400 million viewing minutes in its first weekend and earning the honor of being the streamer’s “most-binged” premiere. It's finally official. After months of discussions, speculation, and close calls, Paramount has agreed to a merger with Skydance. Paramount is one of the oldest studios in Hollywood and Skydance is a major production company with close ties to the studio, having worked with it on the "Mission: Impossible" and "Terminator" franchises, among many other projects. The Paramount/Skydance merger originally looked like it was going to happen last month before the rug got pulled out. Now, the two companies have come back together to hopefully forge a more secure future in a rapidly changing entertainment business landscape.
Paramount's special committee has now unanimously approved the merger. Skydance and RedBird Capital partnered on the deal, which had to be signed off on by Paramount's controlling shareholder Shari Redstone. She owns National Amusements, which controls the majority stake of Paramount. So, what did they finally agree to, exactly? Let's get into the nitty-gritty of it all.

Now season 2 is speeding ahead, and Variety reports that Anthony Carrigan of the HBO series Barry has signed on to play the video game character Calypso! As the casting announcement describes him, Calypso is “the mysterious, charismatic host and creator of a dangerous demolition derby tournament, who invites all assassins, vigilantes, mercenaries and joyriders to participate. To the winner, he offers the prize of making their greatest wish come true, but with Calypso there’s always a twist.“

In fact, had it not been for one chance meeting with the iconic actress cum director Rae Dawn Chong from Hollywood, the actor just may not even have been here. Thanks to a series of fortunate turn of events for Pratt, she immaculately ended up helping him immensely in changing the course of his life; going from homeless to becoming the dominant box office force he is today.

The Lincoln Lawyer star Manuel Garcia-Rulfo has been cast in a fresh take on the Jurassic World films. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, who led the $3.96 billion trilogy, will not be returning for the new film, directed by Gareth Edwards. While other prominent stars like Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey are also part of the film, it is highly unlikely that the film will make money like Pratt’s films.
Manuel Garcia-Rulfo will replace Chris Pratt in the next film in the Jurassic Park series after Jurassic World: Dominion
When it comes to the box office numbers of films, it almost appears that the Guardians of the Galaxy star is a money magnet. He has been part of a number of billion-dollar-grossing projects in recent times, including last year’s film The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
As part of the “Climate Reality Check,” just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now a more extensive study published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment has analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022 under the same criteria.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.

His credits include “The Walking Dead,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Red Notice.” At this writing, the campaign has raised over $30,000 of its $100,000 goal.
The posting detailed Haven’s injuries as including “broken ribs, multiple fractures in his neck and back, a shattered scapula, punctured lung, and a skull fracture which will require facial reconstructive surgery.” Initial reports in the AP described some of the injuries to other crew members as being limited to bruises and broken bones.

Starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, sci-fi thriller Mercy is taking shape, with Kali Reis and Rafi Gavron among the actors joining its cast.
For the past few months, Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov has quietly assembled what could end up being one of the starriest sci-fi films of 2025. In January, Amazon MGM bought up the global theatrical rights for Mercy – which is unsurprising, given the package: it has Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson attached as its stars, and Hollywood veteran Charles Roven as its producer.
In the weeks since, more and more names have been added, including Annabelle Wallis (who starred in the gleefully twisted Malignant) and Kali Reis, who made a strong impression in the hit series True Detective: Night County. Most recently, Deadline reports that four more actors have been added to the roster: Rafi Garon (A Star Is Born), Chris Sullivan (This Is Us), Kenneth Choi (9-...

Sydney Sweeney and her team are pushing back against a report that she will star alongside Johnny Depp in a new supernatural thriller called Day Drinker from 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb.
Jeff Sneider initially reported news of the project in his TheInSneider newsletter on Friday. However, after the story went viral, a representative for Sweeney dismissed the report. Sweeney herself seemed to address the report on his Twitter on Saturday, saying that she “woke up to rumors.”
According to Sneider’s report, Zach Dean wrote the script for Day Drinker, which follows an “enigmatic stranger (Depp) and a bartender (Sweeney) mourning the loss of her lover.” It’s said to explore themes of “love, friendship, and revenge.”

I’ve said this many times, but I state it again: I’m a super fan of the fantasy genre. Whether it’s because The Lord of the Rings saga remains my favorite after all these years or because it’s a genre that allows exploring the true immersive, escapist potential of cinema, I’ve always felt a special connection with this type of storytelling set in a completely imaginary world, full of mythical beings, breathtaking kingdoms and castles, and uniquely unforgettable creatures. Therefore, the mere fact that Damsel is an original fantasy story automatically set my expectations for this Netflix movie higher than usual.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) and written by Dan Mazeau (Fast X), Damsel follows the story of Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a young woman from a poor kingdom who sees an opportunity to change her life, as well as that of her people and family,...

Just over a year ago, the Peacock streaming service announced they were teaming up with genre filmmaker James Wan for a series adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here) – and even at the time, it was clear that they wouldn’t be keeping the Stinger title, because the show was being referred to as the Untitled Ian McCulloch Project, since Yellowstone consulting producer Ian McCulloch was on board to write and executive produce the show. The project is now going by the title Teacup, and not only has Peacock given it a straight-to-series order (allowing it to bypass the usual pilot process), but Deadline reports that Yvonne Strahovski, whose credits include Chuck, The Predator, The Handmaid’s Tale, Stateless, Dexter, The Tomorrow War, and He’s Out There, has signed on to play the series regular role of Maggie Chenoweth. Strahovski will also be a producer on the show.

Described as a horror thriller, “Teacup” hails from writer Ian McCulloch with James Wan and Atomic Monster attached to executive produce.
