Mediorcre thriller, decent acting from Bella & Mickey.
lawman-6529428 November 2020
This is by no means the greatest thriller and the story is very predictable; however, Bella Thorne did a good job for the role provided. In addition, Mickey Rourke was solid as well during his major scenes. He was calm, yet menacing. I felt that the interplay between the two main characters was one of the few highlights in the film and provided some much-needed tension. The plot and general reason for the character's motives are not surprising, very one dimensional in nature. There is also a major twist late in the movie; however, depending on how much you were paying attention you might be shocked or see it coming a mile away.

Regardless of the general mediocrity of Girl (2020), I felt it was enjoyable to watch and merits a viewing, especially if you can watch it on your preferred streaming service. I would not recommend purchasing this movie though, it is more of a rental at most. 5/10 for the fact that Bella and Mickey carried this movie with their presence.

Not as bad as the low rating suggests
mjsreg27 November 2020
After seeing the low rating of this movie I thought watching it might be a waste of time, but decided to give it a go.

Although this won't win any awards if wasn't too bad at all. The story is fairly predicable, but it does have some unexpected moments and a nice twist at the end.

The acting is solid as is the production.

I am absolutely embarrassed that I watched this, please dont make my mistake
inexplicable0077 April 2021
I dont think I have ever given a movie such a low scoring. The writers must have been on Meth.

This movie is absolutely dreadful, I have no idea how people actually thought this would be a good idea. The main protagonist stumbles into town like she is Clint Eastwood on a mission to kill her father.....ok that's interesting. She walks into this crappy abandoned town and once she finds the bar the "dialogue" starts and I start to wonder if I made a very bad decision. Yes folks I did.. I was left speechless at not only how ridiculous the acting was but also at the decisions and developments that went on in this movie. I had to wonder if this was supposed to be a plot as the movie was just so so bad. It got worse and worse but I had to finish to give it a fair rating and that I did. Anyone else telling you this is a 9/10 is on meth too. If you want to enjoy this movie I guess you could do that too but that would be the ONLY way.

Dont say I didnt warn ya!!!!!

Daddy..
Draysan-Jennings26 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If Mickey Rourke wasn't casted in this film I never would of watched it. Although I did think the film was corny at times, he definitely made the movie watchable. Bella Thorne's acting was hit and miss. In some scenes she was great and in others not so much. The daddy daddy daddy coming out of her mouth every five minutes became annoying. Also, how the hell did she get the blood stains off of her sweater? I thought the film score was great, I just didn't find the music playing in the bar scenes believable. No way some dive bar in some hick town is listening to indie hipster music. All in all the film did tie together in the end. Not something I'd recommend but I wouldn't say it was a waste of time. 5 stars.

Pure garbage
leesimon-2635723 October 2021
A supposedly damaged "street girl" returns to her podunk trailer town to kill her "daddy," for no timely reason and stumbles upon his dead body. Then, she feels so compelled by her hate for her "daddy" that she decides to investigate her "daddy's" death. And yes, she says "daddy" that much throughout, which is completely ludicrous for someone who has her supposed background.

This movie was so excessively stupid. There are movies that get away with having unnamed characters without them being lazily written, one-note, weak stereotypes. This movie does not do that. This movie throws one word names at people to avoid doing any of the work involved with building character and setting.

The whole plot was insultingly bad. Every character was insultingly bad. If I hear "daddy" one more time in my life, I will punch that person in their dumb face. I hated this movie. It was too stupid to warrant a single view.

Skip this trash.

It's not that bad.
shellcleo2 May 2022
Not sure why all the negative reviews. The acting is acceptable and I like Micky Rourke so I gave it a go. It's an original storyline and Bella Thorne played the girl part well. Give it a go if your not expecting an Oscar winner.

Just avoid it at all costs
shresthadavid30 November 2020
The only thing that you are gonna get by watching this movie is a question to yourself that why did I decide to watch this movie in the first place. Apart from the plot itself, everything else about the movie is poor and uninteresting. And the boring dialogues and overly slow pacing makes it even worse. Just save yourself from wasting your time on this one.

Low rent Winter's Bone, but still decent
jmbovan-47-16017318 January 2021
This movie is cliched with standard elements of this type of film. But, if you can look past these well worn aspects, the film is a fairly decent descent into troubled childhoods, the effects of poverty, and the difficulties inherent with families in these situations. The ending is both a bit heavy handed and at the same time needed for the sense of hope that is presented by the main character in this film. (Bella Thorne does a decent job most of the time.) Some are going to find this subpar, but I feel that I was able to overcome the faults of the script to enjoy what was on display here.

A watchable thriller with some solid action and a predictable plot! [+51%]
arungeorge1325 November 2020
The unnamed protagonist (Bella Thorne) takes a trip to her dad's place (a quiet, seedy town named Golden) to confront (and possibly murder) him. Apparently, he has been terrible to her mother, apart from being generally absent in their lives. But it looks like someone was a step ahead of her as she finds dad murdered in his barn. Now, she wants answers.

For easier storytelling purposes, Girl meets everyone she's supposed to en route to her dad's home and at a local bar afterward. There's the bartender who means well for her, a prostitute who probably knew her dad, and a random guy trying to strike up a conversation about saving her daughter and leaving town. The most intriguing scene in the film arrives so randomly and it takes place at a laundromat with Charmer (played by the writer-director of the film himself, Chad Faust, in what seems like a brilliant call) looking to hit on Girl. The action here is well-staged and a couple of delicious twists follow.

By now, it becomes obvious that the film shines when it gets action-heavy while the in-between expository scenes are less compelling. Thorne's curious act works to an extent, especially when she isn't reacting to a twist. There's some physicality involved, and for that, I'd give her a thumbs up. Mickey Rourke looks almost unrecognizable (especially the first time he shows up, in a fleeting scene) but manages to make his county sheriff character macho enough. Faust seems to have added a few scenes (like the guy at the bar, and another scene where Girl sees a playful dad and daughter) just to stir emotions.

Few contrivances (and predictable plotting) aside, this isn't the worst thriller you'll see. It's a perfectly serviceable piece of cinema that wouldn't feel like a waste of time.

I surprisingly enjoyed it much more than I expected.
Top_Dawg_Critic24 November 2020
I really only decided to give this a go because I'm a fan of both Mickey Rourke and Bella Thorne, and I'm glad I did.

The casting and performances by everyone were actually spot on and convincing, with Rourke, Faust and Thorne stealing the show. Seasoned actor turned newb writer and director Chad Faust - who also had a starring role, did not disappoint wearing the many hats. His directing was hard to critique and was comparable to seasoned filmmakers. His writing was just as good - gritty, suspenseful, slickly written with some nice twists. It did have some minor plot and technical issues, but considering this was put together by a newb filmmaker, there's much room to be forgiving, especially when I've seen some bad productions lately by seasoned filmmakers. The 92 min runtime was perfect and flew by with the excellent pacing and non-stop suspense. I kinda wanted another 10-15 mins of additional story added, maybe more family backstory and/or Thornes character's upbringing by her mother. The score was on point and very fitting throughout the entire film. The cinematography and location/sets were excellent.

Mad props and respect to the newb filmmaker Chad Faust for successfully putting this little gem together. It's a well deserved 8/10 from me. To see how I review films, or to see more of my 1000+ reviews, click on my username.

You go ... Girl
kosmasp26 September 2021
Or stay? Even though she is not supposed to do the latter, according to her mom and others. Then again, no one puts ... Girl in the corner (no pun intended). The movie gives us Bella Thorne as the main character ... and one feisty at that.

The movie is quite predictable and you may wonder why she chooses to do certain things ... but then again, maybe you don't and just go with the flow of her doing things. Mean people trying to get to her and a quite predictable twist towards the end.

It's always nice to see Mickey Rourke, but also a bit frightening the way he looks now. Not sure how he got that way (I assume it was drugs), but it didn't take anything away from his acting abilities. Whatever that means to you. And if you don't mind the bullet/hatchet thing toward the end ... well it's quite likely you won't be too dissapointed with the movie ...

I really wanted to like this but Rourke's face ruined it
Topaz19223 January 2021
I really wanted to know like this movie but it was slow and then when he finally appeared on screen, I could no longer stomach watching it. OMG! Why doesn't he know when enough is enough? Mickey Rourke's face looks like something out of House of Wax!

useless
FeastMode12 June 2021
This movie isn't horribly made. There aren't a bunch of stupid parts or things to make fun of. From a technical perspective it's fine.

Having said that, this movie is completely useless. I cared nothing about anything. And i had trouble getting through it. It's a nothing movie, and i could tell as soon as it started (1 viewing, 6/11/2021)

That music!
lovethesun8 April 2021
Why oh why did the makers of this film decide to play that obnoxious, awful music practically throughout the whole film? I found it extremely annoying and distracting. Not that this film had any redeeming qualities anyway so I guess it probably didn't really matter. Save yourself an hour and a half and avoid this dog.

Not a bad drama
searchanddestroy-11 June 2023
I first falsely expected to watch another NIKITA or recent THE MOTHER or MOTHER S DAY. Another bad ass female flick.... Well, it is a bit of this, just a bit, in a very lesser mode. The bad ass female seems to be very shy, compared to the dozens of recent action feminist oriented movies. No, don't be afraid if you are reluctant to those features, this one is a pretty good drama, a family drama, as we have seen before, but with, I agree, some action and violent sequences. This movie deserves to be watched, for at least Mickey Rourke as a villain. Poor Mickey Rourke, if you had known him forty years ago, during th eighties. During a short moment, I thought of some kind of BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK scheme; only for a short while. But Spence Tracy is far far from this however cute little feature that deserves to be seen.

Waste of time
butravi16 December 2020
It's boring, the scenes stretch for so long even though nothing happens. It's one minute story stretched to make a movie, and camera work is worst in the last century. Such total waste of time movies should be kicked out. There are high user ratings on IMDb, but watch this movie to realise that many are fake or deliberately wants to torture new people by giving high ratings!

revenge in a gritty setting
lee_eisenberg1 November 2022
When I started watching Chad Faust's "Girl", I only that it was about a girl who goes to visit her dad (possibly with the intention of killing him), only to find him murdered, setting off a string of events. Sure enough, there's more than meets the eye.

If you don't like slow-paced movies, then you'll want to avoid this one. Mind you, the slow pacing is to let the characters develop. I understand that Bella Thorne got her start on a Disney Channel show; if you only know her from that, then you're in for a shock with the rough character that she plays in this movie. It's not a great movie, but the solid direction and performances keep the movie afloat. Worth seeing, if only once; certainly more interesting than the average movie where Tom Cruise narrowly escapes all danger.

It is under rated as 4.9 as it deserves more
yaagoub-nujaidi26 November 2020
The movie is good and enjoyable and has a twist in the story. It deserves higher rating of the least 6 and above. The only distracted me from the movie is too much filler in the lips of Bella Thorne :(

Girl - Dont Take Your Axe To Town
krocheav23 December 2021
Reading about this story sounded as if it might offer some interest but as it rolls out on screen, it becomes more than evident movies don't come too much lower. Seems that the cheapness of digital video has turned everyone into a wanna-be movie-maker, so looks like we are destined to suffer more and more movies like Girl. Things can't get too much more unpleasant, in fact, Girl is just downright grotty. Sometimes grotty can be interesting if it's accompanied by some quality writing and rewarding situations but this is simply juvenile nastiness for nastiness sake.

As 'Girl', Bella Thorne tries reasonably hard but she really just doesn't have what it takes to convince (or maybe direction and script were lacking) Here, she's out to kill her bad ol daddy for sins of the past (or so it seems!) She's handy with an axe (a trade her daddy taught her as an outback child) now, she's come back to her bad ol home town to meter out 'justice'. As might have been expected just about everyone in town happens to be the personification of evil - especially the local Sherriff (played by a now unrecognisable Mickey Rourke) 'Girl' arrives wearing a bra-less well filled skimpy T-Shirt with bare midriff (as you would to a reunion like this, ay) and everything that follows, you've seen (and wish you hadn't) a dozen times prior.

Chad Faust is happy to claim responsibility for writing and directing this grimy sleaze but surely, new movie makers will eventually want to grow up and claim a higher level - then of course, if audiences grow up watching this stuff, maybe many won't ever know better? It's to be anticipated they will eventually want to put something worthwhile into their heads. This ran on Foxtel as an M, maybe it's these very kids who see this stuff day in day out, who no longer recognise the junk they are legitimizing...? For society, and the future of movies, let's hope they will.

Good small town drama
JonanthanNewOrleans27 November 2020
The poor rural small town drama has become a ''sub-genre'' the last few years.

This one is pretty good, the actors do a very good job and the story is good.

Enjoyed it
delores0526 February 2021
It was as a bit slow and I sorta wanted the 'girl' to speak up and wash up. But it added to her character. Roark was a bit slimy and kinda perfect for the sheriff. Anywho, found the story to be played slow and steady but well played.

This town is broken
nogodnomasters13 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Bella Thorne is on her way to Golden to kill her abusive father. Her mother attempts to talk her out of it. Bella discovers someone has beat her to the bunch which causes a mixed bag of emotions. We soon find out who the real killers are and why, but there is still more as Bella hunts for the truth.

Bella was a champion axe thrower which we see in the film. Mickey Rourke plays the sheriff in a characteristic Rourke fashion. I would say the film is more drama than thriller. You don't see the typical swanky Bella Thorne, but a poorly educated country gal.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity. Attempted rape.

Terrible
LoverOfFilmsAndMusic7 April 2021
I hate to say it but Bella Thorne is a TERRIBLE actress. Don't get me wrong, on Disney she was great but since, oh Lord! I've watched A LOT of her films and idk if the director was sabotaging her or her agent hates her but maybe she should do something else, not fans only though, but something with some substance, that she and her family could be proud of. Movie was a decent concept but it sucked.
