Kick-started in 2008 with prime Robert Downey Jr. taking over as Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come a long way from its roots. What started as a series of interconnected movies soon expanded into one of the entertainment industry’s largest ever following the release of 2012’s The Avengers.
The ultimate crossover laced with an intricate storyline gave fans a complete look at arguably the best comic book live-action universe, complete with actors that became synonymous with their roles.
The Original Six Avengers from The Avengers (2012) | Marvel Entertainment
The success of such a crossover largely came off the expertise and brainwork of Kevin Feige, John Favreau, and other early leads who had worked in the early age of superhero movies, that started taking shape in the late ‘90s. However, what if that age had happened a bit closer?

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has had a rocky start this year, with the disappointing debut of ‘Madame Web.’ However, there’s still hope for redemption with two promising releases on the horizon: ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and the concluding chapter of the ‘Venom’ franchise.
That’s right, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ marks the final installment in the Ssu’s ‘Venom’ series. While there’s speculation about the character’s potential inclusion in the MCU, these are just rumors for now.
New rumors have emerged, shedding light on a significant plot development in ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ and its anticipated cameo appearances. According to 3C Films, in this installment, Venom discovers a chilling prophecy: Spider-Man is fated to end his life. To prevent this, Venom urges Eddie to pursue Peter Parker across multiple dimensions. However, complications arise when Eddie encounters a 10-year-old Peter.
As events unfold, Eddie grapples with conflicting emotions. In a twist,...

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is not off to a good start this year, as the cinematic universe opened 2024 with a majestic flop ‘Madame Web.’ Luckily there are ample opportunities to turn this around since there are two notable releases awaiting us this year, ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ and the final installment of the ‘Venom’ franchise.
Yes, you’ve read that correctly, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ is the final ‘Venom’ movie in the Ssu, with some speculations pointing in the direction that the character could be included in the MCU going forward, but as I’ve said those are just rumors.
A different set of rumors however resurfaced that reveal pretty much a massive plot point for ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ and who is set to appear in it. According to the 3C Films in ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Venom learns that Spider-Man is destined to kill him, so Venom persuades Eddie...

While Marvel Studios quietly rethinks its approach to blockbuster entertainment by limiting the content released yearly in theaters and on Disney+, industry insider Daniel Richtman could have a promising update about the next Avengers movie. According to Richtman, who has a decent track record for leaking information about upcoming film projects throughout the industry, principal photography for Avengers 5 begins in the United Kingdom next January. Initially, reports said cameras could roll as early as December, but that appears to have changed.
Richtman says the story for Avengers 5 is “more grounded” than previous chapters of the multi-million dollar-printing franchise. However, Marvel plans to “go big or go home” regarding the Multiverse so that fans can expect plenty of portal-hopping shenanigans as the MCU gets remixed from one adventure to the next. Marvel has dabbled with the Multiverse already, but the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine could push the concept beyond limits...

Earlier this week, we learned that iconic slasher Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise will be a playable character in Warner Bros. and Player First Games’ upcoming video game MultiVersus, a free-to-play platform fighter game that will be making its way out into the world on May 28th as “a free download for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), with full cross-play and cross-progression support.” Now Jason has gotten his own gameplay trailer, which can be seen in the embed above.
As a press release notes, this trailer show us that “Jason towers over the competition as a Tank class character with a scary moveset that incorporates his axe and machete weapons, teleporting ability to show up right behind opponents and stuff them into a sleeping bag, fatally folding a bed in half to launch enemies off the map,...

Since the moment it was revealed that Disney was considering acquiring 20th Century Fox, Marvel fans have been imagining the X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’re still a number of years away from Marvel’s first X-Men movie, but the project has taken a big step forward. Deadline reports that Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) is now in negotiations to serve as the writer of the X-Men movie.
When the WGA strike concluded last year, X-Men was the first project Marvel Studios began tackling, taking pitches for the movie from a variety of writers. In addition to The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Michael Lesslie is also known for Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed, The Little Drummer Girl, and the upcoming Now You See Me 3.

Only a few weeks stand between us and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. The movie is significant for several reasons. It’s MCU’s first “R” rated movie, it’s the movie that’s going to bring Deadpool into the MCU, and it’s Jackman’s first appearance as Wolverine since his on-screen death in ‘Logan.’
Jackman was supposed to retire from the role years ago, and he claimed that in numerous interviews over the years, and yet he is back, in a movie that’s supposed to redeem the studio from the line of failures that they released over the last year.
Recently, we’ve learned that Feige himself discouraged Jackman from returning as Wolverine, not to spoil the perfect ending for the character that ‘Logan’ had. But through some clever plot devices, he can now return without touching The original Wolverine.

Sony Pictures Television’s producers ordered the development of the drama based on the characters from Marvel comics (Sony owns part of several Marvel characters).

Angela Kang, who hasThe Walking Dead to her credit as a creator, was set to run the Silk: Spider Society. It might have been a shocker for many fans as the show could have unveiled several interesting details from Sony’s Spider-Man saga as well as the origin story of Silk.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness certainly was a spectacular movie in terms of the amount of CGI it had to use. It turns out that the sequel also cost a lot of money, surpassing the budget of a far superior MCU film.
Forbes reports that Disney finally declared the production cost of Benedict Cumberbatch’s adventure in the Multiverse, which was $414.9 million. Forbes thinks this surpassed Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s budget, but I don’t think that’s right.
In a 2018 article, the publication stated that Avengers 2 cost $495.2 million. Even adjusting for inflation, the Ultron movie would still cost more. Why is the film’s budget now scaled back to $388.3m?
Forbes does not link to the previous story or the financial snapshot it provided in 2018, but I will:
Here’s the new cost chart Forbes uses in the latest article:
Regardless, Doctor Strange 2 was profitable on paper.

To many Batman fans, the ultimate version of the character on the screen was the voice interpretation by the late Kevin Conroy. Conroy played Batman in numerous adaptations, but it all started with Batman: The Animated Series, arguably the best animated series in history. Conroy passed away in 2022 due to cancer and his last performance as The Dark Knight will be in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three, which is a posthumous appearance that will once again reunite Conroy’s Batman with Mark Hamill’s Joker.
Although Conroy actually got the chance to appear as a live-action version of Batman in the Batwoman episode “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Two,” which was part of a major Arrowverse crossover, he was supposed to make another live-action appearance in the canceled one-season show, Gotham Knights, according to the series’ showrunners.

Dark Matter releases on Apple TV+ on May 8th, 2024.
In 2016 Blake Crouch published his novel Dark Matter. It was a thrilling story exploring the possibilities of varying realities and alternate universes through the multiverse. The concept of the multiverse in entertainment was nothing new; however, this was years before the multiverse boom that now engulfs Marvel, DC and even the Oscars with hits like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man shepherded the MCU in its first three phases, leading the Avengers and being one of the leading heroes that catapulted the franchise to its peak. His journey from an arrogant and flamboyant billionaire to a selfless hero who sacrifices his life for the greater good has made him the most iconic character in the franchise.
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame
The actor has played the character over 10 times in the MCU and that is an admirable record. However, another unlikely actor has surpassed Downey Jr. in terms of voicing several MCU characters. MCU’s ‘Echo’ was a significant show for many reasons. First, it was the first TV-ma show released on the platform as a part of the MCU, it was also the first show to release under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner, and the first to release on Hulu simultaneously. The show also changed the MCU timeline canonizing Netflix’s Defenders Saga.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka MCU, finally got its own Spider-Man in Tom Holland when Sony decided to share the universe with MCU. But it took an unexpected turn for Feige as Pascal hurled her lunch at him.

Marvel Studios has several projects lined up for release in 2024. While live-action movies are limited, there’s a lot of animated content to anticipate. Among the first releases is ‘X-Men ’97,’ scheduled for March 20, 2024. This marks Marvel’s return to the X-Men franchise after regaining the rights from 20th Century Fox. The pressure is on due to the passionate fanbase. The decision to fast-track the revival is influenced by the original series’ success on Disney+ and the popularity of the art book ‘X-Men: The Art and Making of The Animated Series.’ Although not part of the MCU, ‘X-Men ’97’ continues the original series’ storylines, possibly shedding light on its connection to the MCU. Introduced as part of the ‘Marvel Animated Multiverse’ during San Diego Comic-Con 2022, the second season was already in the works by July 2022, reflecting the project’s high anticipation and dedication to fans.

In Sam Raimi's 2022 superhero film "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," the titular wizard (Benedict Cumberbatch) was able to skip across multiple dimensions merrily, thanks to the portal-creating superpowers of one America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). Halfway through the film, Doctor Strange finds himself in a distant dimension, standing in the courtroom of the Illuminati, a superhero team that a parallel version of himself once belonged to. The Illuminati explains to the good Doctor that his alternate self has gone mad and needs to be executed, something they find might be true of the O.G. Doctor Strange as well.
In an orgy of fan service, the Illuminati is made up of alternate Marvel characters culled from the history of Marvel media. Black Bolt (Anson Mount) is from the oft-forgotten TV series "Inhumans." There is an alternate Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch) as she was seen in 2019's "Captain Marvel.

At the risk of being hyperbolic, 2023 has been a pretty terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year for Marvel Studios. The Marvel Cinematic Universe suffered its biggest box office flop ever with "The Marvels"; the "Secret Invasion" series was the worst-reviewed MCU entry ever and drew middling viewership; and audiences mostly shrugged off "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," along with its attempts to tee up interest in the McU's Multiverse Saga. That's on top of all the bad buzz from reports about the House of Ideas' behind-the-scenes woes, the departure of longtime Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso, and the general opinion that Marvel Studios has released too much of questionable quality too quickly of late, even by its standards.
Naturally, however, all of this pales in importance compared to the Jonathan Majors situation. What was once set to be the "Lovecraft Country" and "Creed III" actor's big year came grinding...

We’ve yet to see a Deadpool movie that disappointed the audience; the series so far has a perfect lead, perfect cast, and perfect balance of action and humor, and its take on Marvel’s most notable anti-hero is simply phenomenal.
In fact, according to some rumors, Marvel Studios is considering releasing only ‘Deadpool 3’ in 2024 since it puts a lot of hope in the movie’s potential to restore the hype and faith in the MCU. By Marvel's own estimation, Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the largest yet. It incorporated seven feature films ("Black Widow" through "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever") and eight seasons of television ("WandaVision" through "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law"). All told, there were more screen hours in Phase 4 than in the previous three phases combined. As of this writing, two additional films have been released as part of Phase 5, the central villain from "Quantumania," is to be the franchise's new time-hopping multiverse antagonist.

We can admit it now. The Marvels bombed.
Marvel has had some misfires before, but they usually happened only on the critical end. Audiences still rushed to see panned flicks like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Thor: Love & Thunder. But with The Marvels, audiences and critics came together to express their dissatisfaction. No one thing explains the problems. Like its predecessor Captain Marvel, bad faith reviews flooded the internet with people mad about lady superheroes, but numerous, and legitimate, other culprits led to the downfall: from superhero fatigue to a nonsense story combined with obnoxious editing, to separation from the larger shared universe.
In short, The Marvels comes at a key point in the MCU experiment, one whose failures and successes illuminate the way forward for the company. But rest assured, there is a way forward, and we have a few of our own silly ideas about how to navigate that.
