Disney hopes the Grammys can sing a new tune.
The annual music awards program, which has been shown on CBS since 1973, will move to Disney outlets starting in 2027. The company said it will simulcast the kudosfest across ABC, Hulu and Disney+ as part of a 10-year deal that will make it the home of the event through 2036 and will include a series of music specials produced by The Recording Academy, the backer of the spectacle.
The deal means Disney will have rights to show the Grammys, the Super Bowl and the Oscars in 2027, a trifecta that will give the company new leeway to craft large ad packages with major sponsors. The Wall Street Journal reported that Disney will pay “more than $500 million over 10 years,” citing unnamed sources, around the same amount CBS is said to have paid in its 2016 pact with the Academy to show the Grammys for a decade...

There are 208 episodes of the mystery box-lite CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," so from a sheer mathematical standpoint, they can't all be winners. The long, meandering story of Ted Mosby's (Josh Radnor) quest for love — during which he's flanked by best friends Lily Aldrin (Alison Hannigan), Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), and Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) — spans nine seasons and many, many years in Ted's life, all of which is narrated in retrospect by an older Ted (the voice of Bob Saget), and not every moment is particularly great.
Alongside all-star episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" like "Slap Bet" (where we find about Robin's past as a Canadian teen pop star), "How I Met Everyone Else" (which presents increasingly silly origin stories of Ted's friendships), "Swarley" (where Barney gets a whole new name), and "Spoiler Alert" (where the gang comes face to...

As Paul Tazewell was conceiving design ideas for “Wicked,” mushroom gills served as an unlikely inspiration for Elphaba’s black dress.
The costume designer had stumbled across a documentary about mushrooms. Tazewell says, “I became aware of the beauty of different kinds of mushrooms because of the texture and different colors.”
Tazewell was tasked with designing the costumes for “Wicked,” starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The idea to align Elphaba with nature stemmed from the character’s history.
Says Tazewell, “She is this little oppressed girl being called out because of the color of her skin and ostracized even within her family.” He added that because of her connection and allyship to the animal community he turned to nature to define what her look would be, and that’s where mushrooms became the inspiration.

RadicalMedia, the production company behind such projects as “Summer of Soul,” “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and the filmed Broadway production of “Hamilton,” unionized Wednesday with the Writers Guild of America East (Wgae).
Emphasizing its goal of collective bargaining, the development came after workers at A+E Factual Studios organized with the Wgae, continuing a trend of unionization among nonfiction production studios. According to a statement sent to press, “an overwhelming majority” of RadicalMedia’s 65-member bargaining unit signed union cards.
“Management at RadicalMedia must respect their workers and recognize their union without delay or interference,” Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, president of the Writers Guild of America East, said in a statement. “Nonfiction television and film workers deserve contracts worthy of their hard work and the enormous value they bring to their sector of the entertainment industry.”

There’s not a total divide between the world of film and theater costume design, but they are different disciplines. Sometimes that can be freeing when designing for the theater, which doesn’t require the base level of naturalism audiences usually expect from something shot on camera. But then the detail work that a camera can capture — specific fabrics, patterns, how just the right color reads onscreen — can be an essential component of film storytelling.
As part of the Middleburg Film Festival, costume designer Paul Tazewell discussed how he expresses character and builds worlds through costume in both theater or film. Tazewell singled out “Hamilton” as a project where the final costume designs connected the actors to the style and legacy of the American revolutionaries but didn’t tether them to the rules of period clothing. The costumes were designed to link the actors just as much to the vibrancy...

The first season of A24 and Prime Video's smash-hit animated series "Hazbin Hotel" ended on February 2, 2024, and while the creative team is hard at work on season 2, the show's popularity hasn't decreased. "Hazbin Hotel" earned the largest global debut viewership for a new animated title on Prime Video, surpassing other hot commodities like "Invincible" and "The Boys Presents: Diabolical." The series doesn't boast the same recognizable IP as its contemporaries, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a phenomenon. In the months since the season's end, convention circuits have shown that "Hazbin Hotel" has become one of the most popular shows for cosplayers to emulate, fanart floods social media feeds on the daily, but thanks to the death of the monoculture, the popularity often feels like it exists in a vacuum.
I've previously described "Hazbin Hotel" as adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons.

Equal to the sensation that A New Hope had in 1977, the play Hamilton has become a cultural phenomenon. Written by playwright and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Broadway performance has since influenced music, culture, and entertainment since its debut in 2015. The play and those involved in it have several links to the Star Wars franchise.
Starting with Miranda, he has several ties to Star Wars. He wrote the song seen in Maz Kanata's cantina in The Force Awakens in 2015, a song that is an homage to the Mos Eisley Cantina piece by John Williams in A New Hope. Miranda told Sfgate of his experience writing for Star Wars, "I'm supposed to be writing Moana, but every spare second, I have a shared document with J.J. [Abrams] and we're writing the cantina music for Episode Seven."
Miranda also contributed to the score during the celebration on the planet Pasaana in The Rise of Skywalker.

Ryan Murphy’s latest network offering, Doctor Odyssey, brings viewers into the well-loved world of medical professionals through a unique lens, as this medical team works and lives on a cruise ship.
The ABC medical drama — created by Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken — stars Joshua Jackson as Max, luxury cruise ship The Odyssey’s newest and seemingly overqualified doctor. Max joins the cruise’s two long-time, skeptical nurses on the medical team, Avery (Phillipa Soo) and Tristan (Sean Teale).
When Doctor Odyssey was first announced, the premise of American Horror Story mastermind Murphy’s next series was largely kept under wraps. Would there be a twist in store? Would the cruise ship be not what it seems?
Not until the trailer dropped last month did viewers get a synopsis and first look, and begin to understand what the prolific showrunner really had in store. Recently, when chatting with The Hollywood Reporter,...

There was a new top ticket on Broadway last week, as Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger, began previews.
The musical revival, which has been reimagined by director Jamie Lloyd, only played one performance at the St. James Theatre last week, on Sept. 28, but brought in $304,934 and played to capacity. The show commanded an average ticket price of $187.42, the highest in the industry for the week.
The production, which has drawn buzz for the blood-soaked image of the Pussycat Dolls star onstage and a live performance shot outside the theater during the course of the show, transferred to Broadway after a run in London. The musical is set to open Oct. 23.
Romeo & Juliet, starring Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor, also began performances last week with the second-highest average ticket price for the week at $178.94. The play, which is also a reimagining of the classic Shakespeare tale, directed by Sam Gold...

In an exclusive first look at a video provided to Variety by the Harris-Walz campaign, Walz and Ramos are shown talking backstage during a recent campaign stop in Pennsylvania. Ramos recalled a teacher in his theater program who helped and inspired him.
“That was a turning point in my life,” Ramos said. “She helped me with the audition material, she paid the $50 for the application and she sat with me and wrote the essays because I wanted to quit.”
The “In The Heights” star said he didn’t grow up enjoying musicals or even watching musicals. He calls his involvement in theater an accident and said it simply came about because of the level of encouragement he received from his teacher.

Renée Elise Goldsberry and Lynn Whitfield are forced to put their differences aside during a pivotal road trip in the trailer for the drama feature Albany Road.
The film from writer-director Christine Swanson is set to hit select AMC Theatres and Malco Theatres locations on Nov. 15, with those cinema chains handling the distribution. Albany Road centers on Celeste (Goldsberry), who is preparing for an important work trip and is dismayed that she has to share a car with her ex-fiancé’s mother, Paula (Whitfield). Celeste soon learns that Paula is keeping a big secret from her, with the movie exploring challenging family dynamics and the power of personal growth.
“We come face-to-face with what we fear the most or what we want the most, and sometimes you win — and sometimes you lose,” Whitfield says in the trailer.
Later, while seated in the car next to Whitfield, Goldsberry exclaims, “I hate being powerless!

Oh Mary! broke the box office record at the Lyceum Theatre for the sixth time last week, with a gross of $1.16 million.
The show, written by and starring Cole Escola as a reimagined Mary Todd Lincoln, has played to 100 percent capacity almost every week of its run, which began at the end of June. Entertainment Weekly has revealed that The Boys season 5 has tapped Daveed Diggs for a mystery role in the R-Rated Prime Video series.
The actor is best known for starring in Hamilton (which was already a hit but became a global phenomenon thanks to Disney+) and counts the likes of Snowpiercer, The Little Mermaid, and Velvet Buzzsaw among his many film and television roles.
This isn't the first time he's circled a superhero project as it's widely believed he was a frontrunner to play Ben Grimm/The Thing in Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps. That role ultimately went to Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Diggs has also lent his voice to Amazon's Invincible as Theo, a member of a therapy group who lost their loved ones to superheroes.

Daveed Diggs is joining the world of “The Boys” as a series regular in Prime Video series’ fifth and final season. Details on Diggs’ role are being kept under wraps.
Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s graphic novel series where the superheroes are the bad guys, “The Boys” is set in a world in which a substance can turn people into superheroes. As such, a legion of corporate-backed celebrity supes enacts their own sense of justice while posing for cameras and covertly doing wet work for the government — kind of like an evil Avengers. The show follows a group of regular humans who work to bring the superheroes down.
“The Boys” is executive produced by Ennis, Robertson, showrunner Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Phil Sgriccia, Michaela Starr, Paul Grellong, David Reed, Judalina Neira, Jessica Chou, Ken F. Levin and Jason Netter.

David Korins, the scenic designer behind “Hamilton,” “Beetlejuice” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” is headed to Tucson, Ariz., with a new exhibition titled “Stages of Imagination: The Iconic Broadway Designs of David Korins.”
The exhibition, which opens this weekend at the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures, will run through May 31, 2025, and invites visitors on an immersive journey through Korins’ work.
Korins, who has worked on the Academy Awards, “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Here Lies Love,” “The Who’s Tommy” and more, was invited by the museum’s executive director William Russo to showcase his work.

Lauryn Hill was announced Wednesday as one of the lead singers on Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis’s new concept album of The Warriors.
As for whether the concept album, which also features Busta Rhymes, Rza, Ghostface Killah, Colman Domingo and more alongside an all-female gang, will become the Hamilton creator’s next full-length stage show, Miranda said it will depend on the reception.
“The plan is just to release it and see how people respond,” Miranda said at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in Manhattan Wednesday. He added that the project did not have a director or producers yet attached.
The album, due to be released Oct. 18, musicalizes the 1979 film that follows a street gang making their way from the Bronx to their home in Coney Island and encountering other gangs en route.

Anthony Ramos has a special, vintage green jacket that he wears to every football, baseball and basketball home game he attends for the New York Jets, Mets and Brooklyn Nets.
In addition to his flourishing acting career, fresh off his Twisters summer and ahead of his upcoming role in Ironheart, the actor always finds time to root for his favorite teams. Soon after, unsettling events begin to threaten her culinary dreams and the opening of her new business.
Produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Productions, “House of Spoils” is set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video on October 3. DeBose’s character believes running a high-end kitchen will be challenging enough without any other problems. However, she faces horrifying consequences after ignoring warnings against using ingredients from the previous owner’s garden. After a ridiculously successful first season, fans of Elsbeth are ready for the police procedural to return with more murder mayhem and hijinks.
With a Rotten Tomatoes score of ninety-four percent, the review aggregator’s consensus on the show is that “Carrie Preston’s standout character from The Good Wife makes for a great detective in this amiable and clever spinoff.”
The series has proven that The Good Wife universe has plenty of room to expand into more shows and genres. Elsbeth starkly contrasted the heavy intensity of The Good Wife and The Good Fight.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
It has a fun and lighter tone than its sister shows, but that doesn’t mean the creators aren’t above dropping an easter egg or two.
In fact, all of the episodic murderers for Season 1 were actors who had previously portrayed different characters in either The Good Wife or The Good Fight.

It's always fun when Marvel Studios takes us to unfamiliar locations and Disney+'s Ironheart will shift the action from New York to Chicago.
Hamilton and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts star Anthony Ramos plays Parker Robbins, a.k.a. The Hood, in the show and tells Entertainment Weekly that the shift to the Second City has resulted in some big changes to the villain's backstory.
Ramos describes Chicago as "a big character" in Ironheart and adds, "Parker Robbins in the comics is from New York, but being able to flip his story and making him from Chicago, we made him from Humboldt Park, which has, obviously, a large Puerto Rican population."
"We created this whole backstory with his mom being from the Young Lords and raising him that way. Chicago plays a huge part in the identity of all of our characters and the identity of this show, so...

As a Disney+ subscriber, I’m growing restless. I haven’t watched a Disney+ original since the wildly uneven “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” The service has dramatically slowed its original output, and it doesn’t look like there’s any strategy in place aside from 3-4 Marvel and Star Wars shows every year. At this point, I’m reconsidering my subscription.
