A lot of blah blah and not enough science
Kendich894 August 2019
All things considered it was an informative documentary but way too long. The creators could've gotten the point across in no longer than 45 mins. Instead we're presented with an hour and a half harangue. One thing that we can take away from the film is that staying healthy is a trial and error.

Give it a try - your health will thank you
micattak26 September 2019
Yes it might be controversial for some, but even the ADA changed their guidelines for low-carb recently and lowcarb and ketogenic are slowly gaining acceptance. Seeing the context under which the original food pyramid and saturated fat is evil craze began was nice. Also the amount of historical film they filmmakers uncovered is great, even if you already know the story from books or blogs.

watch it

An amazing job by Vinnie Tortorich and Peter Pardini
PTMovie2 August 2019
I've been following the work of most of the people featured in this documentary for a while. It's not easy to put so much information in 90 minutes. This movie won't tell you everything you need to know about health and nutrition, but it's a great start. It's very well done, it's based on real science and it tells the story of how we got to the obesity crisis all over the world.

The message about FAT is getting out there!!!
lonnie_beauchamp5 August 2019
Finally, this documentary will start the dialogue on the health effects of fat. The never proven dogma about low fat will hopefully be swept into the dust bin of history.

No statistical analysis
dandanmcgowan4 January 2020
Overall this is a summary of dated scientific research from 1920-1970 that shows absolutely nothing.

No credible experts and the fact that the majority of "evidence" is taken from the 1920's makes this a waste of your time to watch.

If you want to lead a a long healthy life, watch this. Pass it onto your friends- help them too.

Three years ago I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes HbA1C 10.3%. I had been on a " diet" for years, " healthy whole grains" low fat, low saturated fat, little meat. Clearly it hadn't helped me, so I embarked on my own research and discovered what did. That was a Whole Foods diet, rich in animal proteins and fats, devoid of sugar, grains ( healthy whole or otherwise) without vegetable oils, without processed foods. Instead simple meals made from fresh ingredients with meat, fish or eggs as the main component. The result is I am no loger diabetic (HbA1C 5.3%) fitter than in decades and I am not going back. This documentary resonates with me because it explains how I got into the mess I did and how I and others can escape it. Chronic ill health is not inevitable - it is the food folks. BAN the beige, ditch the junk, eat whole foods and prosper - Vinnie is telling the truth.

Can It Be Trusted?
keithkand15 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
My son has Type 1 Diabetes. This film touches very briefly on Type 1, and, in my opinion, it doesn't present it accurately. Since I have some knowledge of Type 1 with my son living with it everyday, it makes me cynical about the other parts of the documentary. Although some of the Type 1 items were presented semi-accurately, I had a problem with how they were presented - as if it was some revelation. First, no one tells parents that their diabetic kids should eat a high carb diet. It is recommended that your child eat a healthy diet, like any other kid who isn't diabetic. Like kids who are not diabetic, you can also let your kid have a piece of birthday cake, etc. Just like a kid without diabetes, they shouldn't make a steady diet of cake. The couple in the documentary made it sound like doctors and the ADA were prescribing a junk diet. That is not the case at all. Second, the couple talks about how reducing their child's carb intake has also reduced the amount of insulin he needs - as if that was a "wow" moment. A person eating a 60g carb meal needs more insulin than if he is eating a 20g carb meal. That's the nature of the disease. Reducing the amount of insulin needed does NOT equate to being healthier. Third, the couple talks about crowd sourcing others in the diabetic community about how they've dealt with inconsistent blood sugars. They say every fifth person came back saying the diet needed to change. Again, it is presented like that is a high amount. That tells you that, from their crowd sourcing results, diet does NOT impact 80% of Type 1s. Since they present doctors and the ADA as incompetent, it needs to be pointed out that, by the couple's own statements, the medical community's recommendations are successful for 80% of their patients. So, this means that this particular family was the exception, not the rule. Fourth, if their son's blood sugar is trending low, it means he is getting too much insulin to cover his carb intake/exercise (maybe they didn't account for the activity he was doing). If their son's blood sugar is trending high, it means he is not getting enough insulin. This has nothing to do with diet, but his insulin to carb ratios most likely need to be adjusted. These ratios are not an exact science, especially in the beginning when you don't know how his body will respond or if he is still in the honeymoon phase (meaning the pancreas still produces some insulin). You need to be in contact with your medical team if your son is constantly out of range, so they can adjust his ratios. Lastly, HIGH ketones is the only thing that has sent my son to the hospital since his diagnosis six years ago. If they really knew anything about T1D when they were producing this documentary, they would've addressed if the keto diet is not producing the same ketones that diabetics need to avoid. Maybe they addressed it at the end? I didn't make it all the way through after the misinformation about T1D and then the documentary seemingly becoming a commercial for Keto Diets. Or, maybe they didn't address it because it's not a healthy diet for diabetics. I don't know.

For any diet that takes away one of the big three: fat, protein, carb, you will see weight loss results. If you try adding any of the three back, the weight will come back with it. Most people cannot sustain the omission of one of the three, which is the issue. That's why eating a balanced diet of carbs, fat, and protein, along with exercise, is the best way to get healthy and, most importantly, stay healthy.

Important message for the masses

Really impressed with this documentary. It doesn't promote any one diet, but debunks some myths that are ingrained in our society, showing the history of nutrition politics, how and when things went wrong. Recommend everyone to watch this.

Excellent Summary on the current state of Nutritional knowledge
keith-8011 August 2019
This documentary is aimed at those people who are curious about their health and what they eat. Presented in a way that quite entertaining and not too dry!

There is so much nutritional mis-information around it can be very tricky to try and make any sense of it all. Sadly, in my opinion, 'Nutritional Science' doesn't really exist at the moment. So many highly qualified experts disagree with each other. All this tells me personally, as a reasonably well read lay person, is that these opposing camps can't all be right, or wrong I guess!

Most professional health-care people are bound by their professional bodies to keep to a script, so can't really be trusted or expected to support anything outside what they are told or guided to do. Thankfully this is slowly changing as the 'Wisdom of the Crowds' is really passing them by, at an every increasing pace as individuals find out what works for them.

This movie / documentary will give the open-mined person a good heads up on a certain perspective or way of eating and living. They are then free to make their own life choices and hopefully see some changes or results that may help them as an individual.

WARNING - once you engage with the information here you cannot un-learn!! It may well be life changing or even life-saving for some...

Armchair Scientists = "Idiocracy" (Might as well watch that movie instead)
brucejsantos-3989411 January 2020
What do you get when you combine a former male model, a journalist, a software engineer, and a handful of (just) GPs and family anecdotes? This documentary. Zero science was used. Maybe what they claim has a founding, but the lack of any credibility for the 'experts' used should make anyone with two brain cells highly suspect. You deserve better.

I gave it a 9 only because I want more
msdianebaker5 August 2019
Fantastic look at how Americans became fat. No fat in our diets and we get fat. Sounds counter intuitive but when a high fat low carb diet is put into action with actual people amazingly their health improves drastically and quite often their waistlines shrink pretty rapidly. I'm hoping for a part II! Lets see a movie showing all the success stories of people going No Sugar No Grain!

Food is medicine
rrdobbins3 August 2019
Living in this country where we think we have freedom, but do we? Our government has been regulating our food since the '70's. In this documentary, we see how dietary guidelines and bad science has created the obesity epidemic and many of the corresponding diseases. This is a must-see film! You can change your life with this information while the world struggles to keep up.

Fat is where it's at!
mreinhart-368835 August 2019
I was once a fat biochemist - in both interpretations of that statement! In Science courses that I taught I preached against eating fat and in my own life I ate lots of carbs and cut fat off of every piece of meat. My ADD worsened, my weight skyrocketed, and I was grumpy and depressed. I came across Vinnie Tortorich accidentally, looked at his advice skeptically, but tried his suggestions anyway. That was fifty pounds ago! My blood work is perfect, I no longer take blood pressure and ADD medications- in fact I take no medications- at 67 years of age! This movie brilliantly portrays how the medical and pharmaceutical industries have gotten it all wrong and how individuals, taking things in their own hands, are setting things right again. This movie is a tour de force on the topic!

Unscientific biased cherry picked garbage
bondh-4483622 December 2019
Let's take the eskimos for example. Small familial gene pool, live in a active lifestyle eating fish and caribou but also tons of phytonutrients from the sea. They would eat fresh fish from the cleanest fresh waters untouched by pollution. The man talking about how healthy he was looks terribly unhealthy? It's not about fat or an all meat diet. People who eat Whole Foods not processed or factory farmed, and eat fresh foods as close to nature as possible with a majority of it being plant based are the healthiest. This documentary was all over the place, I agree if you have seizures you should go on a whole food Keri diet but that doesn't have to mean a ton of meat. A Keto diet literally starved your brain and create long term metabolism disruption it's not a diet for the majority and animal products especially are a direct link to cancer the world health organization will tell you that.

Not very scientific
Luthor805 September 2019
There is a lot of discrediting the government for past mistakes in regards to nutrition advice, anecdotical claims, ignoring current scientific information and straight out lying about other studies.

Lime many other "documentaries" about nutrition (Vegan, Paleo, etc, etc) is just a bunch of people too enamored with their opinion that they just cant provide a balanced point of view.

So much bull could not even finish it.

First hand experience
mcudworth27 September 2021
This way of eating has helped me in so many ways, after 6 months all of my health markers improved dramatically. I don't need a fancy study to tell me it works. I have tried every diet imaginable, and keto/low-carb is the only one that is sustainable for me.

It is absolutely mind-blowing how much of the guidance we follow comes from fraudulent studies and skewed studies. I always say, follow the money and you will find the truth. It sickens me to know how much mis-information our government has crammed down our throats. When I was a kid there were very few fat kids, now it's hard to find a kid at a healthy weight. What's changed...our food!.

Before you judge, try it, you may find you feel better than you ever have.

Be prepared to have your mind blown
jokan-678166 August 2019
Be prepared to have your mind blown and to question some health and dietary guidelines you've never questioned before. This documentary traces the origins and influences of veganism and the diet-heart hypothesis we've been told to believe is based on fact-based science. It isn't. Unfortunately, this erroneous information has only served to make us sicker and fatter. Watch to learn how and why this happened and what you really need to eat for good health. Then go read Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz or any and all of the books written by the speakers in this film, learn the truth, and improve your health!

Too much talking
Ruslanwashere26 August 2019
It was interesting first 20 min, after that they were just repeating the same thing. Documentary is about the fact that fat and cholesterol MIGHT be not only a reason of heart disease, and that there's no high profile evidence that cholesterol causes heart strokes. Nothing was told how I should be eating to lose weight, and what is the conclusion of the fat consuming.

camommy5 August 2019
What I like about this film is that it has credentialed doctors, scientists, and journalists to back up its claims. It's eye opening. But what's more, it's heartfelt, entertaining, and informative. I learned a lot, got chills, laughed, and even teared up. Some of the experts featured are: -Andreas Eenfeldt, MD Family Medicine -Bret Scher, MD Cardiology -Jeffry Gerber, MD Family Medicine -Eric Westman, MD MHS Internal Medicine -Georgia Ede, MD Psychiatry -Drew Pinsky, MD Addiction Medicine -Ivor Cummins, BE(Chem) CEng MIEI PMP® Chemical Engineer -Dave Feldman, Software Engineer -Nina Teicholtz, Science Journalist (U of Oxford, Stanford U, U of Yale) -Gary Taubes, science journalist (Harvard U, Stanford U, Columbia U)

Not to scientific.
tomhans-6001410 August 2019
So i didn't watch the last 20 minutes, too much of the same repetitive style going on. But here goes. It shows some examples of people and patients who improves their lives on a ketogenic diet. And that's fine. Some people will benefit from that. But most of us find ourselves between the two extremes of High carb or zero carb diet. Some will thrive on higher and some will thrive on lower carb consumption. It was zero to little nuances on dieting and labelling the sugar industries as the devil itself.
