Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.
The original article follows:
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

Coming from the writer of recent slow-burn horror The Wind, the slightly oddly-titled Lovely, Dark and Deep, tells the story of a park ranger looking for answers from a childhood tragedy while she walks alone through the wilderness.
I guess it should be no surprise that this movie could also be called a slow burner but don’t go thinking that this means the first half or more of the film is boring or that nothing of note happens. Because Lovely, Dark and Deep grabs its viewers right from the start. But, there’s no doubt that the pace picks up towards the climax of the film and the movie leans more into horror the longer it goes on.

Turner Classic Movies, the leading authority and definitive home of classic film, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 14, 2024. To honor the milestone, TCM will present on-air programming salutes featuring TCM staff who were there from the very beginning, as well as a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from TCM’s first host and champion, Robert Osborne.
“How many other channels on television celebrate their anniversary? How many other channels’ fans know where they were the day a network launched?” says TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz. “I’m not sure either of those things are true without Robert Osborne. He’s the Walter Cronkite of TCM. The Johnny Carson. The Alex Trebek. With these intros of Robert’s, we’re celebrating his impact and his continued influence. Plus, as we do with the movies we show, we’ll put Robert into context. Additionally, we’ll also look back...

Turner Classic Movies will turn 30 on April 14, 2024. That’s right: It’ll be 30 years since Ted Turner flipped the switch — flanked by Old Hollywood legends Arthur Hiller, Arlene Dahl, Jane Powell, Celeste Holm, and Van Johnson — right in the middle of Times Square to turn the network “on.”
Also with Turner that day was the man who’d become TCM’s longtime host, Robert Osborne, then just 61. A veteran columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, Osborne had become known as a close friend to many of the surviving stars of yesteryear ever since he was photographed kissing Bette Davis’s hand during a Golden Globes broadcast in the late ’70s. He’d go on to host the intros and outros for most of TCM’s primetime lineup for close to 23 years after that launch date, until he died in March 2017 at 84.
For so many TCM fans, Robert Osborne was the network.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

From Stu Macher in Scream to Shaggy in Scooby-Doo, Matthew Lillard is no stranger to iconic roles — but the fervent fanbase that accompanied his casting as William Afton in Five Nights at Freddy’s came as a surprise. Blumhouse Productions has been one of the biggest names in horror for several years now, putting out movies like The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises, among many others. October 6th saw the theatrical release of their Exorcist sequel The Exorcist: Believer, which is meant to be the first entry in a trilogy… and the poor reception that movie got from movie-goers and critics alike wasn’t exactly what Universal and Peacock were hoping for when they forked over around $400 million for the rights to distribute that trilogy. But Blumhouse’s luck turned around three weeks later. That’s when their video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) reached theatres – and that movie has officially become their highest-grossing production!

[This story contains spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy’s.]
Five Nights at Freddy’s filmmaker Emma Tammi has now set the opening weekend record of $80 million for a Blumhouse film, and she’s keenly aware that her journey to this point was an unlikely one.
Tammi started out as a documentary filmmaker, tackling such subjects as endurance running in Fair Chase (2014) and the 2016 Presidential Election in the Jason Blum-produced Election Day: Lens Across America (2017). From there, the producers of Fair Chase approached her about the supernatural horror film, The Wind (2018), after seeing the way she and co-director Alex Cullen captured New Mexico in their doc. They wanted Tammi to bring those same instincts to The Wind’s own New Mexico backdrop amidst the Old West.
The Wind ended up being well received, which signaled to Blum that Tammi could also be a viable genre director. He eventually thought of her for the long-in-development...

October (and even September) have been chock-full of appropriately scary horror movies for spooky season, and the weekend before Halloween introduces one more. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Those looking for the next big horror franchise need not look much further than Universal and Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” an adaptation of the popular multi-platform video game first introduced in 2014. That initial game led to five sequels, multiple spin-offs, and even a series of novels that just kept things going for the fanbase that has been itching for this movie to happen.
Directed by Emma Tammi of the 2018 horror-Western “The Wind,” the movie stars Josh Hutcherson from the “Hunger Games” movies, Elizabeth Lail from “Mack & Rita,” Piper Rubio and Kat Conner Sterling, but as we all know by now, the cast of a horror movie is rarely as important as the premise, especially with...

Like almost anyone else who grew up in the past 50 years, film director Emma Tammi has distinct memories of visiting a certain type of children’s entertainment restaurant. You know the kind. The place where the arcade games are plentiful, the ball pits are crowded, and the stage is full of animatronic critters who do their best to twitch on key to a prerecorded music jamboree.
There’s a universality to Tammi’s recollections about such places too. As a child, she had joyous fun playing the games, hearing the songs, and chewing on the pizza. And yet, every once in a while, she might catch a glimpse of a motorized mouse in a tuxedo, and he gave her pause.
“[I would have] so much fun and also feel an eerie presence amongst us,” Tammi says now with a laugh. “The animatronic [creature] looking sideways and then straight into your soul is a memory that stuck with me.

Murderous animatronic mascots are disconcerting and all, but everyone knows that's not the scariest part of "Five Nights at Freddy's." No, the true horror of the mega-popular multimedia franchise is the prospect of ... having to search for a new job (shudder). The days start to blur together when you're unemployed, at least when you're not worrying about how to pay your monthly utility bills or whether you can actually afford to buy groceries this week. It's also why once you lock down your latest gig, it's hard to want to give it up, even if it does entail working the night shift at a crumbling family entertainment center where your co-workers are prone to committing homicide for funsies.
One presumes that's the same reason Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) ignores all the red flags upon being hired to operate as the late-night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in the "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie.

For all you urbanites who occasionally daydream about leaving behind the humdrum of traffic jams, incessant honking, and neon lights for some rustic charm and fresh air, think again. The cinematic world has a peculiar way of reminding us that the serene countryside might just be hiding some unspeakable terrors.
More and more of us are drawn to the idea of “getting back to nature,”; camping trips, nature walks, desolate desert drives, or even ill-advised witch hunts in the woods without a map. But, if horror films have taught us anything, it’s that safety should always come before seclusion.
Get lost with us in the cinematic woods of rural horror movies, where the only thing scarcer than cell service is a way out.

After one of the worst months of 2023 at the box office, we might have found the true savior for the month of October in a pop singer. Read on for Gold Derby’s October 2023 box office preview.

Considering how quickly most of the stops on her U.S. tour sold out and the controversy it stirred up with ticket sales, it was no surprise when the filmed version of her L.A. show...

The Holdovers Review: Alexander Payne And Paul Giamatti Reunite For This Marvellous Film [TIFF 2023]
Alexander Payne has long been one of the most respected American directors, tapping into unique stories of the human condition. From high school elections ("Election"), the abortion debate ("Citizen Ruth"), or even wine tasting ("Sideways"), Payne has a way of finding humor and heart in everything he directs. His work never really faltered until his last directorial effort "Downsizing" in 2017. While I was higher on it than most, it lacked much of Payne's signature charm that makes his movies, often about unbearable people, so irresistible.
Speaking of unbearable, one of his most prickly and obnoxious characters yet takes the lead in "The Holdovers." Paul Dunham (Paul Giamatti) teaches ancient civilizations at Barton Academy, a top-tier boarding school in the 1970s. His course is the greatest love in his life -- Hunham references various points in ancient history more than he blinks, bringing an immense knowledge of his subject matter that's unrivaled.

What makes "Five Nights at Freddy's" terrifying? As a video game series that leans heavily on atmospheric fears that elevate the quality of jumpscares, the "Five Nights at Freddy's" franchise (Fnaf) is synonymous with scaring the bejeesus out of players. As this immersive, visceral quality is unique to individual gameplay or invested backseating, the upcoming "Fnaf" adaptation — which is being helmed by Emma Tammi — has its work cut out for itself when it comes to capturing the essence of the games. As a result, the Blumhouse-produced "Five Nights at Freddy's" film will need to venture beyond franchise rules and introduce fresh elements that work while still retaining the DNA of the games at its core, all while combining creepy lore and spooky elements to create a terrifying experience.

Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation appears to be zeroing in on Sidney Powell, a conspiracy-theory-obsessed lawyer who was a key figure in Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Four sources with knowledge of the matter, several witnesses, and Trump allies who’ve appeared before the special counsel — including at least one in the past few days — team seem to agree: Powell should be preparing now for Smith to bring criminal charges.

In the heart of an impenetrable forest, a solitary park ranger named Lennon, embarks on a journey that is as much about her own murky past as it is about the uncanny wilderness that engulfs her. Lovely, Dark, and Deep, the debut feature from Teresa Sutherland (writer of Emma Tammi's The Wind) is a folk horror-lite nightmare that, while filled with rich and haunting imagery, often loses its way.
Having finally secured a job as a ranger in a remote outpost, Lennon finds herself in an environment that is as captivating as it is unsettling. The forest, cloaked in whispers of strange disappearances and conspiracy theories, becomes a character in its own right. Its vastness both awe-inspiring and intimidating. However, as Lennon adapts to her minimalist existence, the line between reality and illusion begins to blur, leading to a confusing and disjointed narrative.

During an interview with Fandom over six years ago, Jason Blum was asked about the film adaptation of "Five Nights at Freddy's," and it's clear he knew what a Goliath he was up against. "That game has a rabid fan base and I would say, without Scott [Cawthon], it wouldn't make a good movie." It appears this sentiment has been long-lasting, as Blum continued, "But I think Scott has a very clear idea of what he wants the movie to be, and I think because we're using the same creator as the game in Scott, I think there'll be a great movie."
Blumhouse has had the rights to Scott Cawthon's ridiculously popular gaming franchise since 2017, but the road to the silver screen has been difficult. Chris Columbus was originally slated to direct but was replaced by Emma Tammi ("The Wind") after he exited the project. Then there was the controversy surrounding Cawthon's political donation history,...
