Better Than Expected!
Rob133126 February 2023
ZeroZeroZero was so much better than I expected. It's so good that I'm mad at myself for putting it off for so long. I have no idea why Amazon didn't promote this more because it's definitely worth watching. It's about a drug shipment of cocaine being shipped from South America to Europe. It follows the drug cartels, the sellers, the makers, the brokers, everyone. It feels very authentic and real. It reminds me a lot of the movie of Sicario. It has a multinational cast that all do an incredible job. If you're a fan of drug and crime dramas then you'll like this. You'll be hooked from the first episode to the last!

What an unexpected surprise!
Supermanfan-133 December 2022
ZeroZeroZero has to be one of the most underrated, surprisingly great series of the last few years. For all the great ratings by critics and viewers alike I never heard about this until recently. It's an eight episode miniseries that will keep you in the edge of your seat throughout each episode! It's beautifully shot, it has such a fresh, gritty feel to it. It's also brilliantly written, directed, acted, etc. The acting is just fantastic, especially Dane DeHaan and Andrea Riseborough. I was so into this show that I binged all eight episodes of the course of a weekend. I was actually disappointed that it's only a miniseries because I wanted to see more. Hopefully they start making more of these kind of gritty crime thrillers.

One of the best series I have seen in a long time!!
capitanblusero15 March 2020
The story, the characters, the music, the performances...everything is superb. I really loved the mix between three countries (the suppliers, the couriers and the buyers). I definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great series with all the ingredients. A must watch!!

WOW!

I am a big fan of Narco-drug series, and this one is probably the best I've watched in the past two years. It's like watching Sicario, Gomorrah and Bad blood series at same time. AMAZING. It's brutal, realistic and pretty well done. To add, if you love Gomorrah, Suburra or Romazzo Criminale, this one is for you. A truly gem's genre.

Superb atmospheric crime drama
Jason_Off20 February 2020
Am I biased, yes because I absolutely love the Gomorrah tv series written by Roberto Saviano (As is the book for this series). In fact I was looking to see if there would be a season 5 just the other day and I came across this new show.

The pacing, the music, the acting, the suspense are all perfect, it's fabulous. I have only seen 2 episodes but I have little doubt the rest of the show will continue with the high standards already set out. Simply put I love these slow moving provocative crime drama's, which don't have the typical over the top action.

10/10 One Of The Best
chirox6 March 2020
Shows like this come along only once in a very long while. An American shipping magnate that has had to resort to concealing illegal shipments to help his ailing business, an Italian mafia family and Don that is looking to come out of hiding and reward everyone (including his enemies) with a huge payday, and a Mexican Army Elite Troop who's job it is to take down the Narcos. Combine these three elements, add extra intrigue, changing allegiances, amazing cinematography, settings on more than three continents, incredible tension building episodes and you have ZeroZeroZero. Ignore the naysayers on this site, this is one of the best shows you will see for a long time. Acting, photography, direction, are all first class. This is an incredible piece of TV that deserves to be up there with the very best.

Intelligent; complex; solid
steveo12213 March 2020
If Charles Dickens had written an epic cartel/mafia/"Gomorrah"/"Narcos" hybrid script it would have looked something like this: a bingeable, epic, gripping, international crime thriller. A very smart, complex, brutal, clear-eyed script with three major story-lines: Buyers, Sellers, Brokers. Excellent production values; impressive level of detail, a cast of hundreds and some astonishing performances.

Underground perfection. Thrillingly soundtracked by the mighty Mogwai.
markgorman15 February 2021
This blew me away from the first bar of Mogwai's omnipresent, brooding, lurking, evil, insidious, dangerous, murky, scary score.

In fact Mogwai is one of the reasons this programme scored a perfect 10 for me.

It's electrifying. The violence is brutal but necessary and the story, although often complex, is worth disentangling.

It's the best use of multi POV I've seen in a long time. Very long scenes that start with an innocuous framing device; a door, a forklift truck load of jalapeños, for example, become the jumping off point for two, occasionally three, 'takes' on a plot-critical scene. It's genius.

The acting is obscenely great and as it develops it's the Hodgkinson-suffering drug dealmaker's son, played by Dane DeHaan, that eventually sits atop a masterful pile of gritty, entirely believable characters. Outstanding.

It's a three level story about cocaine smuggling by the mafia from the Mexican Narcos via a New York shipping family (Andrea Risbourgh, DeHann and Gabriel Byrne) who broker a $60m transaction and oversee its-calamity ridden transfer from A to B via most of Africa (the bad bits).

And being Catholic takes a right good kicking by the way.

It's white knuckle from start to finish (thank you Mogwai) and thrillingly filmed. At one point I said to my wife "I wish I could see this in cinema".

I expect this to clear up in awards season. Bravo!

So far below Gomorrah
ferg-315853 April 2020
This show is so far behind Gomorrah it's incredible. It's looks and sounds fantastic but the story is just beyond crazy with zero plot. It just makes no sense. Well shot and soundtrack great but that's it.

I watched 2 episodes and I must say that it's a really well done series. Sollima is become an expert about this genre. The back-and-forward narration style makes the view more captivating.

Pretty mediocre, honestly don't know what other reviewers see in it
Mike71612 June 2021
I must be missing something. I had extremely high hopes for this one. I also adored the first two seasons of Gomorrah (the third was okay, haven't seen the fourth). The synopsis sounded promising. Following a massive cocaine shipment down the line across continents? Sign me up. Unfortunately, it falls flat.

I feel like Zero(x3) isn't quite sure of what it wants to be. You'd expect a story like that to be grand in scale; a crime epic, examining the different governments, institutions, and organizations that enable the drug trade. Something like The Wire, but even broader. Instead, we focus entirely on three small groups of individuals. The story is also confined specifically to this single shipment of drugs. What this boils down to is three, practically unrelated stories of a typical "deal gone wrong" scenario. None of the stories are particularly engaging. They struggle for power, things go wrong, there's shootouts and violence. As standalone stories, they'd be pretty run of the mill action thrillers, light on the thriller, and characterization, depth... Also, the flashbacks every episode when two characters and their stories converge are kinda gimmicky. It's usually pretty easy to surmise how the character ended up there, but you have to watch their viewpoint for half the episode anyway.

The characters are another major problem. I don't care about a single one of them. The only ones that are even remotely fleshed out are the brother and sister shippers, and they're pretty flimsy (and unbelievable), nowhere near enough for us to care. The rest are cardboard cutouts. We get no sense that their lives exist outside of drug trafficking, no matter how many times you show the mafioso hugging his kid. They're ruthless and evil and motivated by money and power (also God I guess in one case). Nothing deeper beyond that.

I love a slow burn, but this one draaaags. A whole lot of just nothing happening, and when it does, it rarely feels satisfying. Shots and scenes go on way longer than they should. It just didn't live up to the potential to me. But hey, by all means, give it a shot, because lower score reviews are in the minority. Just don't expect groundbreaking writing. It's a drug story with nice atmospheric shots of exotic locations, decent action, shocking violence, and scary bad guys. I just feel like I've seen this before, only done better.

Edit: after watching the final episode (I had watched all but one or two prior to this review), I bumped my rating up a star. Once the main stories finally converge, it wraps up neatly, and in the end, made for a decent little fictional crime story with good production values. The journey to get there just took entirely too long, was full of cliches, and loses your interest many times along the way. Still not the type of series I was expecting, and my original review still stands.

The part in Mexico is great. The part in Italy is good. The part with the New Orleans family is boring & hard to believe.

Love Mogwai doing the score. Love the acting. Love the execution of each story. And I love the direction and cinematography. My only complaint is that I wish it had more episodes. Here's hoping for a season 2!!!

Highly entertaining one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Brooklynsmagicmike11 April 2021
This show honestly exceeded my expectations beyond what I could of ever imagined. I just couldn't take my eyes off of it I was so engaged. From the excellent acting to the stunning visuals. To the emotional family storys to the hardcore action. The pacing was very good too. This show is just like no other and I recommend everyone give it a try. The only reason it isn't a 10 star for me was the ending while isn't bad. I found it to be little unsatisfying and abrupt. I'm not sure what I was expecting just not that.

Ignore the bad reviews. V good show. Highly recommended
doriangray-3475220 February 2023
Very good show. The storyline, the acting, the casting, the director did a great job. Disregard the negative hype. I would've loved for the show to continue.

Nothing about it warrants a single negative review. Realistic and made with good taste. Surprised really that it's a French production, but definitely better than most British productions. Those are actually slow and annoying. Filmed in many countries and with actors from many different backgrounds and the common thing is they all performed to the highest standards. They all suited their roles perfectly. High praise for the casting agency of course.

Some negative reviews claim it's "slow". But these people just want car chases and gunfights without story. That's why we end up with the superhero movies n shows of today. Coz viewers have no taste. Toxic fan bases ruined great many shows. Unfortunately the average iq was lowered from 115 to 100. So the average viewer has no understanding of storyline n no patient for the story to develop. The story here is very good. Realistic. Actors from all over the world are relatable, believable, and the casting was just perfect. I highly recommend this show. No faults so far. Unfortunately it's a mini series. Also some negative reviews complain about the slaughter of a pig. Pigs are slaughtered every day everywhere. People just don't wanna see it happen that's all. Well it happens. Not enough reason not to watch a show. The pig would've ultimately died a worse death in mass production in slaughterhouses all over the world. Reality is worse than the screen. That's a fact. Horror fans enjoy watching people slaughtered and tortured but when it comes to animals dying a better death than what happens in reality they cry. But they'll still eat McDonald's n kfc while those are the actual torturers of animals. Animals will die best thing is to do it as humanely as possible. And no electrocuting them isn't humane at all. Don't try sticking a fork in an electric outlet, coz u know how a fraction of a second will feel. Imagine having it done all the way til death. That's the reality. SMH.

One last thing. The Don's car plate number has 666 in it. Is it a coincidence?

Cliche galore

Tropey, cliche and average at best.

Imagine having a shipping empire and then think going down with your kids to handle drug transactions yourself is a good idea.

sadistic
heiderer-879-16184412 March 2020
Great scenic passages through Mexico, Senegal, Italy. Very tense. Back and forth editing style that sometimes does not signal time changes. But marred by some silly acting choices, and gaps in detail. The screenplay seems unsteady. Not sure the writer understand the drug business well enough. Overly sadistic. (I think this has been influenced by "Breaking Bad", but without the weirdness or humor that makes that series so great.)

Cinema in a Mini-Series
PStyles19 December 2022
This is one of the most well shot, well written miniseries I have ever seen, and yet nobody I talk to has ever heard of it (I myself heard of it from a podcast completely unrelated to tv/movies). Amazon definitely needed to promote this better.

To me, this felt like one really long film rather than a miniseries, and I mean that in the best way possible; there is very little discontinuity or downtime as each episode rolls on. The story itself is a tightly woven tale of 3 parties from 3 different countries involved in an international cocaine shipment, and it is executed wonderfully. The suspense is high and action nearly constant after the first episode, which admittedly takes a minute to get going, so be sure to give it a chance as it has to set the rather complicated story up.

The thing that shocked me the most was the production quality; Amazon must have spent a fortune on this because the set pieces, camera work, cinematography, acting etc. Are all top notch, and each episode feels like a film production. There are some rather breathtaking hover shots over exotic landscapes, and the locations felt authentic.

The show utilizes a "rewind" cinematic technique throughout that I thought was rather unique and well executed. At certain points the story will seemingly jump forward in time, and as things begin to converge and confusion sets in (as in, "what the hell did I miss?"), the timeline will rewind and you are given the missing details from a different character's perspective. It's executed extremely well, and adds additional suspense to an already wild show. You'll know these moments are about to happen because the camera slows and cued music begins to play for great effect.

If you don't mind reading a lot of subtitles (roughly 2/3 of the show) and this sounds interesting, definitely check it out. It's the best kept secret on Amazon.

Not well thought out.
damazywlodarczyk6 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Characters not thinking, situation are not believable, series is gritty and tries to be realistic, but there is nonsense every step. Elite antiterrorist squad kills its own members, and there is no fallout? There is no supervision over this squad? The ship these soldiers died is a crime scene and its just sailing like it never happened. It's stupid and simplified. The production is very good though, but the screenplay ruins it.

Warning: Spoilers
A kid and his sister ended up orchestrating a 5 ton cocaine deal. There is a bit around episode 4 where their boat breaks down and rather than the Senegalese just shooting the kid and taking it all, they end up helping him for 50 kgs of it! Just one example of some silly bits in the plot.

Compelling but with faults
karenwalsh-2824127 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to give this a 9 as the performances & cinematography deserved it, but it loses a star because them getting through ISIS territory with a huge shipment of cocaine strayed credibility that little bit too far. That said, if you like Gomorrah & Narcos & you can stomach some really violent scenes, you'll like this and it's well worth the watch.
