really not that bad

Warning: Spoilers
I can't understand derogative reviews of this movie. It is not worse than 85% of horror flicks made in other countries. It has a mystery, mood, suspense, some blood, a lot of family drama and quite a satisfying, explanatory endings. Definitely not slow and I'd rank it between 5 and 7.

A couple who have lost their 6 year old son (he was never found after a walk, but in the end of the movies we do understand what has happened to him, won't spoil you). They decide to adopt a child from childcare monastery, an abused, very weird boy who immediately starts to transform into their lost Vanya. But of course things don't go easy. He is wild, violent, the wife starts sees visions of the presumably dead Vanya and then she gets pregnant and the adopted child is a threat. Meanwhile her husband tries to understand ho the adopted "Vanya* really is and who was his mother, as he seems to never get old. and possesses quality of transformation of anything we lost or grieve about..

It is not a bad example of Russian horror movies and yes, Omen is more boring. Give it a try.

I really don't understand the low ratings

The movie isn't perfect, but it is scary. It preys on the fears every parent has about losing a child, as well as the anxiety about being swallowed whole by grief.

If you want CGI monsters and a final teenage girl, this movie isn't for you. If you like good writing and unexpected horror, give it a go.

First quite good russian movie
manumanumanu-415123 June 2021
It's far to be perfect, no doubt.

But the idea is quite original.

Character are dumb like they often are in horror movie, but just enough dumb to make the movie work.

The story is quite good and believable.

The realisation is also quite good.

+1 for mains characters, they do a really decent job.

It's the first russian "hollywood style" recent movie that have a decent story up to the end, and for the first time I watch it until the end and not to see how f... dumb it is, but because I like it enough.

Watch it with open mind and no expectation and you might find it quite pleasant.

Nothing exceptional but ok.

This isn't teen shock horror, so the negative comments may be due to pacing, It's effective, well acted, paced slowly but no ones story along nicely and overall as another review said better that he bulk of horrors out there.

A stupid couple adopt a zombie kind of boy and « wonder why there's something wrong with him »... Pathetic ! Don't waste your time and watch The Omen instead !

A catastrophe

One you've started watching the movie it's too late to stop, you want to know how incredibly dumber it can get. But it's a waste of time, except for some funny moments.

It's watchable.

Directing and cinematography were on point. Acting was fine. Screenplay could have used a bit of work. Not sure why the little boy had the wig on for most of the film. Kid is creepy. The CGI of the boy was really unnecessary and actually took away from the film.

A good attempt at a horror, but...

As I sat down to watch the 2019 Russian horror movie "Tvar" (aka "Stray") here late in 2022, I had never heard about the movie, so I didn't know what I was in for here. But being a horror aficionado, of course I opted to sit down and watch what director Olga Gorodetskaya had to offer.

The storyline, as written by Olga Gorodetskaya, Maria Kabanova and Anna Starobinets, definitely had a good foundation and concept idea. However, the transition from script to screen made for a somewhat mediocre and bland horror experience. There was so much potential for something grand here. But when the movie came to the end, I have to admit that I was left with a sense of 'was that really it?' and also of somewhat having wasted 90 minutes on something mediocre.

The acting performances in "Tvar" were good. Needless to say that I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, as I have only watched so many Russian movies. But the actors and actresses carried the movie quite well. Child actor Sevastian Bugaev (playing the Stray) was definitely nicely cast as he was able to put on some genuinely disturbing performances when needed.

Visually then "Tvar" is somewhat of a mixed bag of nuts. Some of the special effects look good and definitely added a layer to the movie that helped carry the movie, and then there were effects that were questionable and dubious, such as the CGI animated kid.

For a horror movie then director Olga Gorodetskaya didn't bring anything new or overly thrilling or scary to the genre. "Tvar" is a watchable enough movie, at least for a single viewing, but that is also about what there is to it.

My rating of "Tvar" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Why such a low rating?
shaylad205530 July 2021
Other than some bad CGI this was actually a really good movie. The acting was great and so was the story. You cared about the two main characters. This is a unique take on the "evil child" sub-genre of horror. The only off-putting thing about the movie is there are some things not clarified and that CGI is terrible. I'm talking laugh out loud bad, but the acting and the story more than make up for it.

Who's that boy?

More original overall and in its final twist than I expected. I thought I'd watch ten minutes of it and then let it go... Missed it. The two-star rating is a little harsh unless you're a little jaded ^^

Better than expected

I expected to watch a few minutes and move onto something else. Instead, the story gets hold and retains interest. Good character development, very atmospheric, and definitely scary.

Warm and inviting, because love conquers all
zhivago9728 August 2022
Stray is about a beautiful young orphan who in a sad Russian orphanage who gets adopted by a lovely couple, Polina and Igor, who recently lost their birth son. The adopted son is named Vanya and also known as Stray.

As the story unfolds, and his scars heal, Vanya brings much joy and love to the lives of his newly adopted parents. His dad brings him to the park to play with local children and, even though Vanya is still adjusting, he does a fabulous job integrating with the group and shows his natural leadership instincts. Vanya is very kind and talented and everyone wants to be his friend.

He is able to help others overcome their troubles because he has learned how to overcome his own.

This is an important movie about being open to new beginnings and learning to love the imperfect.

In the end Vanya teaches his new parents important lessons in good decision making, while he also learns important life lessons in becoming a social butterfly. Everyone needs a boy like Vanya in their life! He brings so much joy and love to everyone around him and is a gift from God.

Evil Boy aka Stray aka Tvar
turtleloverules24 January 2022
This type if horror is sensible, and a resolution is presented at the end of the film. A welcome entry, as opposed to a killer/spirit killing for no specific reason. The only knock was the film didn't have English audio. Cool concept.
