9 Movie theory
akashashok-4634314 February 2019
*******SPOILERS AHEAD******* The movie '9' casting Prithviraj revolves around the bonding between a father and son. It's a psychological thriller. Movie depicts Albert(Prithviraj) as a schizophrenic person with dual personality (one being Albert and the other as Eva). Actually, what I mean to write is not a pure review of the movie "9". It's just a theory.. The film reminds me of M. Night Shyamalan's "SPLIT", which has the protagonist with 24 personalities ;) And, here in '9', I am proposing that there is at least 4 personalities for Albert! The wolf which is chasing Albert is, his own fear. Towards the end, Albert manages to conquer his fear, at a point where the wolf starts to step back. The character Dr. Inayat Khan is Albert's another face. No one except Albert has seen Dr. Khan throughout the storyline. Oops! Adam has seen him, right? (We will come back to that). In the office, Albert's colleagues ask for Dr. Khan's photo, and they get to know that Khan has no phone or a mail ID!(which shows the inexistence of Khan in real world). Like Divya wants to meet Eva, to prove Albert's disorder, the office scene is just a repetition in the past. The colleagues wanted their mentor to be alright. Now, coming back to Adam..he is seeing Khan for the first time(Khan earlier visited when Adam was just a toddler of a year old), when he is playing with the football and breaking the flower vase. But still he replies to Khan's words saying that Khan has also grown old. Actually here Adam is talking to his father itself, with Khan's personality this time. And that's why he was scared also, because Albert has seen Adam breaking the vase; but to his surprise Albert was just calm and supportive because of Khan's character inside. Albert was obsessed with Khan 's character. Now we can relate why child Albert sends out post to Dr. Khan during school days... without any address, to be precise! Also, Dr. Khan says that on 8th day he will visit Albert. "How you will come as there is no mode of transportation?",Albert asks.. "I have my ways...I have my ways.."Khan replied. Of course! He just needs a fraction of second to flip the mind and apparate in front of Albert.

N.B: These are just my findings seeing only 1 time in theatre. For any erroneous information, please correct me.

A visually stunning movie with some very thrilling moments.
Azanspy10 February 2019
9 is sci-fi and horror. It starts off as a sci-fi movie and ends with horror and very good twists. We may think that the climax has no answer but the end credit scenes shows a definite answer. Technically, 9 is outstanding in cinematography, background music and visual effects. Prithviraj does a good job along with Wamiqa Gabbi, who was very good as Ava apart from the dubbing. After a disappointing directorial debut, Jenuse Mohammed gives a very good attempt and leaves a signature in Mollywood. 9 is that movie you should watch only in big screen and not in small screen. 9's technical side deserves that experience and one will only like this movie if you experience that.

9 is everything you don't need in a sci fi film and in a weird way, everything you ever wanted
CobertNeede7 February 2019
For a film that is marketed and promoted as a Sci-fi thriller with elements of horror, 9 may overstep the beliefs that the audience entrusts with the film's crew. 9 is that film that you really want to see succeed and wishes that something excites you in the next frame. Spoiler alert : it never happens.

9's premise and initial themes excited me. It was so damn good. And is yet again a very good example that 9 could have been in safer hands if it had been held and nurtured by a seasoned creative director than Jenuse. I've got nothing against him and i loved his execution of 100DOL, but you cannot entrust such a beautiful theme to a prospect and expect it to flourish. It may have been done before, but here it doesn't seem to lighten up. The film is deep. That is a major plus. But it doesn't present that thoughtfulness to the audience very well. There are instances in the film that questions itself why it's there. And when the film climaxes, you understand why those weird scenes were in the movie and why it mattered. And you understand that the movie forcefully included scenes that doesn't make sense so as to achieve it's ending. That realization is not a pleasant feeling.

The film's major plus is the film's visuals itself. It's one of a kind. I have to say that. The film deserves at least that. The visuals were eye popping and exciting. That itself is an understatement. The low light shots were beautifully handled and it is an example of how Hollywood level technicalities can be recreated in Mollywood too.

I would not go the length and say 9's ending and the so called 'twist' is cliché, but definitely doesn't create the impact that it should've had. The film presents the story quite expertly and it creates a strong impression early on. This was the standard with which the film's ending should've been crafted with. But although the story defcets, 9 keeps a very good pace and allows the viewer to judge the film's story from another perspective.

9's cinematography, it's characters, the exotic locations and the lead actors make it a film worth a strict one time watch. Nothing more. Nothing less.

PS - I know this review might come off as unusual considering the long list of reviews that state this film as excellent. I wanted to make it clear that this is what I could gather from the film and what i think all the general consensus thinks about the film.

Brilliant Movie from Mollywood
nihalbinsulaiman8 February 2019
9, keeps a fresh experience in Malayalam industry. Director Jenuse proven that, Mollywood haven't any limitations to do Sci-Fi Movies or any different genres. Well crafted story by Jenuse Mohammad, tells an intense relationship between a father and son on the background of a scientifically related global event.

Prithviraj Sukumaran did very well and shows one of the finest role of his career as an Astrophysicist named Albert Louise. A super-natural power tries to threaten to the life of his son, Adam, and Albert struggles to save Adam from them.

Another highlight character is Iva and it's done by Wamiqa Gabbi, who is familiar to Mollywood by her debut movie 'Godha'. She did an excellent, astonishing performance. I think Prakash Raj as Dr.Inayat Khan haven't much screen presence in movie, but the few scenes he handled seems really superb.

Nobody ever attempted to make such a movie in Malayalam with different genres combines together. Nine is an mixture of Sci-Fi, Psychological Thriller and Horror. But apart of these, Nine strongly said about emotional relationship of a father and son. Nine gives a very engaging first half and an above average second half.

Background Score by Sekhar Menon made audience to glued upon the seats. Abinandhan Ramanujam gifts magical frames to viewers by his outstanding Cinematography. The technical team of this movie deserves an applause because they paid much attention in VFX. Normally VFX in regional movies seems very pathetic, but Nine have a high quality Visual Effects which didn't create any trouble to viewers.

We couldn't find answers for all the questions after those struggling 9 days. There are so much doubts left which we cannot find the answers. But as the protagonist's theory, all questions have it's answers. A lot of mystery still left there.

A bigfish like Sony Pictures can choose any other industry in India having technologically advanced, when they stepping into regional movies. There's only one answer for Why Malayalam, The content of Malayalam movies!!

Overall a must watch movie for a good visual treat and different experience. Hope more movies like this will rises in Mollywood soon!!

My Rating : 3.5/5 (Above Average)

Cant believe the rating
jafarm8 February 2019
Didn't live upto the expectations i got from first 15 minutes. Spoiled an interesting plot (what i thought it would be) and diverted into the usual 'its me' kinda typical Prithviraj horror movie. The Sci-fi part is just an establishiment period for the real plot which can be classified into Horror or Psyco-thriller only. It felt like they included that small part for marketing as the first sci-fi movie in malayalam. Making is good though, especially bgm, vfx and cinematography.

One-Line Review: 9 (7 Stars)
nairtejas18 March 2019
Jenuse Mohammed's 9 is definitely a welcome step in Malayalam cinema's psychological thriller scene because of its ambitious storyline of a young boy and his astrophysicist father's (Prithviraj Sukumaran) quest to find out and resolve the paranormal activity controlling their lives as they live in isolation in the Kashmiri peaks to have a closer look at a destructive red comet that is going to almost pass by the face of Earth, but is let down by its damp final set of moments that just takes the fun out of the whole product despite the mind-boggling revelation. TN.

This is NOT a Sci-Fi movie
TheRadicalMonk19 May 2019
I created an account on IMDB only to let people know about the truth regarding this movie. I watched this movie because I was misled by the (spam) ratings here. As another user has written, the movie starts with some science but eventually loses track of its story. I gave a rating of 2 because of a good attempt at VFX. I suggest that you do not waste your time watching it.

It is a visual treat for the malayalam industry. The movie making is beyond what words can express. Excellent acting from Prithvi, Wamiqa, Master Alok and the rest of the team. This film proves that our industry can go to greater heights.

Sony has made a really bad choice for this movie
Leven_the_critic20 May 2019
Pritiviraj can be a great actor when it comes to very little acting. I mean the guy could try to look like an actor instead of putting himself in a shoes of Bruce willis. The female lead has potential since she's OK and looks the part. Even though she's too short to be an actress. The guy who wrote the lame story inspired by bunch of Hollywood movies should have better sense that we have seen most of the Hollywood movies that have been made. So Mr director /story maker, if you feel proud that it's a. Masterpiece it isn't its garbage that belongs in the gutter. Do you want references on the number of Hollywood movies that you have stolen ideas from? For starters, body snatches ET, Mama, signs, the village, many Hollywood movies mixed mashed into the exact recipe for a. Hollywood movie packed with an Indian flavor. Don't waste your time making more movies. You should be ashamed of yourself. All that resources wasted for inflating rajappans ego .

An indigestible package.

Warning: Spoilers
Nine is a mixture of sci-fi,horror,mystery,psychological thriller etc. That is the major defect of this film. I can't relate with the story line of the film which depicts a comet changing in to a gohst. And there is no idea, why the gohst is hunting the hero's son. At the end the film just gives a lot of confusions to the audience.

A mashup copy of other movies
edwinch-0114625 May 2019
From the start the plot was so lame and it resembled several other movies. Vellinakshatram is what I felt it mostly resembling. But then added a little plots from other movies to make it unique even though the plots and story did not add up correctly.

Pling!!!
joppanLive19 February 2019
Definitely worth for one time watch (Yes, because once the suspense is revealed, you may not find it thrilling. For first time viewers, a good watch). Wamiqa was stunning, and is Prithviraj and the kid. Personally, I was not very pleased with the story theme (that will only get revealed in the climax.). Have seen many movies released with the same/similar kind of theme in Hollywood as well as in Malayalam. But till the climax, the movie is very engaging. So watch it without knowing anything about the movie, else you will miss the thrill. 9 would have been a astounding work if the movie-makers made it more of a science-fiction thriller. ( You may get disappointed if expecting a true science fiction movie in 9, because the science fiction event described in the movie is just a plot setter and has actually not much significance with the actual story )

Climax made a worst feel to film. It's typical cliche climax of prthivi film. Before climax it made a variety to mollywood but ending made very ugly.

Too darn long
premjs9 February 2019
Put together the movie has a run time of 159 minutes. However the entire movie can be wrapped up in 20 minutes including the climax which is about 9 minutes but just to give everyone that twist and make them gasp the first 2 hours and 30 minutes are wasted. There were times when I took my phone out and started playing Temple Run. One good thing is that the director has cut down on slow motion shots of Prithviraj walking.

Great storyline & visuals. Class movie 👌
apn1269 February 2019
A 9 day journey comprising of a series of events, mainly based on the disturbed relationship between a father and his son. The movie has a solid platform laid upon which the story is built. The horror character that the movie takes adds a nice touch to the mystery that the film carries. BGM was good. Visuals were just amazing. The plot twist was unexpected and the climax too had its part to play. Kudos to Prithviraj & Jenuse for taking up sucha script and visualising it. Surely the class of Malayalam movies are on a different level. A great movie experience. 10/10 it is.

george_namaste23 December 2020
Good movie with ideas from hollywood. Not a typical malayalam movie. I heard this didnt run much in Kerala.

If you are from abroad, a must watch movie. You might think that the movie doesnt make any sense, or the horror is so bad mid way. But, everything would make sense at the end. Be patient.

Nine is a good movie for an average Indian moviegoer and brilliant for few!
sabareeshvv10 February 2019
What do you expect in a movie differs from person to person and when it comes to Indian cinema, we have a lot of varieties of movie from the masala type with big star cast which has strong comedy, action etc. to strong emotional ones with good story. Ok, in short the point is the movie has to be relatable to our audiences. But now the question is does Indian movies cater needs of all its viewers? The answer is lately "NO". The clear answer for above question lies in our increasing addiction for foreign movies and as per statistics the online platform Netflix is gaining Indian audience. The "NO" is because we have very little movie which makes us think once we step out of that hall. The so called movie with brain. Oh, yes, every movie has a heart because of the hard work of innumerable number of people behind and in it but to have a brain is altogether a different league. When I stepped out of that hall after watching Jenuse's "9", the first feeling was the brain part of that movie. This is a classic one from Jenuse & Pritviraj team. We cry for a Martin Scorsese movie such as Shutter Island or a Guy Ritchie's Revolver or the very famous Nolan's Inception and when we get one, we simply ignore and shame it just because we are not good enough to understand it. "9" is a well-crafted, well-written & a clear movie which makes us think. The beauty with "9" is every genre moviegoers can watch and enjoy the movie the way they like it because you don't get to see such a movie often. It is a must watch movie for everyone. Rating: 4.5/5. Keep improving it @ Jenuse & Prithviraj!

P.S. @News18Movies & @gautamanb. Oh, yea, Zero is Sci-Fi Movie to you, we get your standard. LOL. And review is not my thing but had to put one here after reading @News18Movies 's stupid review.

Psychological Fantasy Thriller, with a touch of Emotional drama.
vinodapple25 June 2020
Starts on a brilliant scientific note with an emotional preclimax and an Open climax for viewer to decide. Brilliant performance by Prithviraj. Prakashraj shines as usual. Glamorous touch by mamta Mohandas and wamiqa. Little unconvincing scenes with wamiqa might mislead us about the plot, but eventually keeps u anticipated about the next. Malayalam film has reached a new level. Great production values and movie locations are absolutely breathtaking. Viewer definitely enjoys throughly every scene.

Warning: Spoilers
Movie starts like a Hollywood SciFi movie then turned into a horror then again changing it to something else.A huge disappointment at the end.The movie don't have an core.It seems like they focused to make the scenes thrilling and mysterious but forgot the story on the course. At a point a main character appers from nowhere when there is no way to get reach that place and start explaining about the mystery when no one knows about it.Like this the movie have lots and lots of potholes in the story. Ofcourse this is an Experiential movie, There may be some flaws but here the number is huge
