Hilarious!

A great first episode, the fast paced dialogue works so well with this style of comedy. The acting is pretty good and the storyline was kept short and sweet. Laughed out loud numerous times.

A super funny start.

One of those shows I knew I really enjoy, but for some reason didn't get around to watching.

This first episode is deliciously funny, you really are transported back to the early 1990's with this.

The characters are funny, the scenario is very different, a sitcom set during a troubled time in Derry's history.

The girls (and boy) are hilarious, and that scene during detention was side splitting, it's where the show really seemed to belong, incredibly funny. 9/10.

I Had No Idea

I love the scattergun dialogue here as the kids try to talk past one another and establish a kind of pecking order. From the big mouth who is scared to death when faced with consequences to the troublemaker. We get insight into the families in Ireland and the Catholic school the girls inhabit. Great scene in detention when they old nun dies and somehow the girls are being blamed for it. They have already been called on the carpet for threatening a new student in the back of the bus and then turning cowards when she confronts them. Being a male viewer, I was absolutely in pain watching the poor guy suffer when all he needed was a bathroom. I would assume there was a men's room somewhere because there must be male visitors and priests at times, but no one will listen to his needs. They greet him with hostility.

Gyet the spoon!

This is a thoroughly entertaining comedy. The funniest scene is of course the detention scene but the most memorable one, which appeals to my dark sense of humour and justice, is where Erin is threatened with a spanking. I was pleasantly surprised to see the programme makers include such a reference!

Warning: Spoilers
Derry Girls takes a retro look at family and school life in the mid 1990s. The opening track is a Cranberries song.

It is an energetic dark comedy set in Londonderry when the Troubles were still rife but a ceasefire was around the corner.

The teenagers in this corner of life would not know that a ceasefire was about to happen. A bomb scare has caused traffic chaos. Even the school bus has an inspection done by some soldiers.

Sixteen year old Erin wakes up in the morning to find her cousin Orla reading parts of her diary and gets annoyed. Erin's friend Michelle is hyped up after watching Pulp Fiction. Michelle's cousin James is going to be a pupil in their Catholic all girl's school because he is English. It is for his own protection but as James is about to find out, he has no where to go for a pee.

It was an energetic and chaotic first episode but not much of a plot. My teenage son already watched the whole first series, I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

I can see teenagers would enjoy this. I doubt many of them who do not live in Northern Ireland will even know much about the Troubles. I wonder if my lad got the Macualy Culkin gag about him trying to divorce his parents.

Older viewers would approach this differently. The Troubles were not much of a laughing matter but it is interesting to see people in Northern Ireland trying to live an ordinary life. There was a diverse soundtrack which at times overpowered the episode.

Season 01 Episode 01

"Derry Girls" Season 1 Episode 1 kicks off with a bang, introducing us to the vibrant and hilarious world of Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle, and James in 1990s Derry, Northern Ireland.

The episode centers around the girls' first day at Our Lady Immaculate College, where they navigate the usual trials and tribulations of teenage life, from crushes to friendships, all while trying to avoid the chaos of the Troubles.

Erin, the witty and opinionated leader of the group, finds herself at odds with her cousin Orla's eccentricities, while Clare grapples with her strict Catholic upbringing. Michelle, the fearless troublemaker, provides comic relief with her outlandish antics, and James, the English boy thrust into this Irish world, adds a unique dynamic to the group.

Against the backdrop of bomb scares and army checkpoints, the episode expertly balances humor with the underlying tensions of the time, setting the stage for an irresistibly charming and poignant series.
