definitely in the top 10 Murdoch episodes. simply brilliant
joshgibbs-3527615 November 2017
It is so great to see the writers continue to deliver this long into the series. Most TV series run out of steam after 5 seasons; And to have such a moving and meticulously written and directed plot in SSN 11, it's a triumph for this series. Also the ending is great and befitting. Brilliant work

Wonderful, Emotional Storytelling
GunnersMate27 March 2018
After 10+ seasons, Murdoch Mysteries can still deliver. The Accident started off with plenty of humor (both character and situation driven) and a mystery that was almost hidden from sight, but as the accident itself is investigated, the multitude of disparate pieces meld into a beautiful story of life and the choices that we make. Just beautiful and exceptionally well-told.

Simply One of The Best episodes

I've watched this particular episode twice, and knowing the ending did not change the emotions this episode evoked. Wonderfully developed characters and story help to create a great entry...Well done by all of the actors.

A Profoundly Moving and Exceptional Episode
jlthornb5122 April 2018
David Hewlett gives an unforgettably powerful performance in this profoundly moving episode of Murdoch Mysteries. Written by Mary Pederson, this is a particularly challenging and emotional entry in the series and is uniquely existential. Her script is astounding and inspired by the Homicide: LIfe on the Street, "The Subway." Thomas Craig reminds us what a truly fine and gifted actor he is as he comforts a sad, lonely, and once unliked man during the last hour of his life. This is television drama at its finest and no one will watch this Murdoch Mysteries production and be unmoved and perhaps even unchanged.

Engrossing. Emotive. The writer proved that strongly written characters make all the difference. One of the best episodes of the series.

Best episode of the series so far!
apbryant7 February 2021
I don't write many reviews, though I read many of them. I am a HUGE Murdoch Mysteries fan and felt compelled to write one after watching this absolutely compelling hour of television. It is amazing that after so many seasons, the show can still deliver on this level. It hits all the marks that a viewer wants in an episode! Such excellent writing, production and performances by all involved. I would show this in television production classes as an example of the right way to craft an episode. I do so wish there was a special "exceptional" star rating beyond 10 because "The Accident" certainly deserves it.

9 out of 10 for me just because the first half was a bit slow, but otherwise the episode is fantastic. A change of pace in the storytelling, and absolutely superb acting by David Hewlett. Really heartbreaking and moving. One of the best MM episodes yet.

Not quite historically correct!
stevejeffery13 February 2018
At the opening of this episode, the cast are in conversation about 'robots'. Considering this program is set in the 1890's, and the term 'robot' was not used in the English language until 1920 by Czech playwrite Karel Capek in his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), then, although the program is 'light entertainment', the writers should have given a little more thought to the historical accuracies.

They made me cry
oppec11 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The writers and actors did a wonderful job making me care for a man that I hardly know.

When they declared their love for each other, I was screaming "kiss him" at the TV. The viewers were rewarded with a beautiful, tender kiss.

The mystery was also interesting and I knew the nurse was involved. She just came out of nowhere.

Life is short. Tell the people you love that you love them.

One of the best episodes in the series. Touching and sad. I had tears.
reb-warrior23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is without a doubt one of the best episodes in the series. Brilliantly written and directed. An all-around great job by the actors.

A street accident takes place, leaving the street blocked off and chaotic. There are many injuries including, Mr. Dilbert, Brackenreid's manager from when he worked in the city offices. A carr is pinning him against a wagon. It turns out the car pinning him is keeping him alive, for the moment, so-to-speak. Once they pull back the vehicle he'll die. To top it off, the accident was no accident.

This all takes place in real-time. The directing was pretty amazing. Imagine being a director and organizing all the people, animals, and props in one area encompassing many different scenes. In each scene there's all the movement in the background, indicating a chaotic area due to the accident.

What is so touching and sad is Mr. Dilbert and later Mildred Ash, the way he is written and the way he is played by the actor, David Hewlett. In the span of one episode, we get to know the character pretty well. And also the type of persona. Tho, we may have an idea from the previous episode he was in. He is a very meticulous, nerdy, quiet, person. Now he knows he is going to die. The actor plays all the emotions just right that fit with the persona of the character. The thing is, Dilbert is a very sweet innocent man.

The innocence of the man is felt so strongly here. He was just an everyday guy going about his business when somebody decides to target him. When Mildred Ash shows up, she is his perfect counterpart. They are cute and sweet. Which of course, makes it all the sadder. Their conversation was so sweet and charming to watch. Dilbert declares his love for her, as she does for him.

Murdoch is great as he and George organize the area and investigate. George was the one that noticed the issue with the brakes, which then led to the investigation. Murdoch went from scene to scene investigating the isolated area. Brackenreid stayed with his old friend, Dilbert, right up to the end. All of this going on while everyone is trying to get the street back in order.

One thing that raised my eyebrow was all the variables in pulling off the murder. One wrong turn, or swerve, or being off-time, and the whole thing fails. Or, the wrong person is killed. The whole plan revolves around knowing Mr. Dilbert's routine, every path he walks, and every street he crosses. Knowing his exact timing every single day. The murderer would have had to have been watching him for a while. But how can you predict the rest of the traffic in the area? This could totally throw off the plan. I mean, the plan worked, but I definitely raised my eyebrow.

Notice after Mr. Dilbert dies, and Mildred walks off, she still has his glasses in her hands. I found that very touching. Recently, I've kept the glasses of a loved one that passed and placed them on a memorial table that I created. So that really resonated with me.

After Mr. Dilbert passes away, the street is cleaned up in a sort of montage. It's kind of sad. We just watched a devasting death, and now life goes on. The brilliant directing, story-telling, acting, and emotional impact make this one of the best episodes of the series. 10/10.

WOW! BEAUTIFUL, SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL.
alfiehooker7 August 2023
This was an amazing episode full of sadness, rebuke, love, anger and laughter. I'm in awe of David Hewlett, everything I have seen him in has been amazing, he's able to portray humour within sadness and sadness within humour. He made me cry and even though I have seen this episode a few times, I'm always stilled by the performances and the atmosphere.

The Directing, camera work, lighting, acting and everyone involved was exemplary.

There was only one thing wrong with this episode and that was having commercial breaks. I believe it could have achieved even higher accolades if it was a continuous, uninterrupted performance. Unfortunately it was not, but the performances were that good the tension was kept and maintained.

BRAVO.

Third Time This Premise Has Been Used.
dctrainer30 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode copies the movie "Signs" with Mel Gibson and the season 6 episode of "Homicide: Life on the Street", titled "The Subway". In the former, Mel Gibson's wife is pinned by a car against a tree. Alive, lucid and talking they are given a chance to say goodbye knowing that she will die as soon as the car is moved in an attempt to save her. In the latter, Vincent D'Onofrio plays a businessman pinned between the platform and a subway train. He is awake, alert and lucid but the EMT'S quickly realize any attempt to Jack the subway car away to free him will likely kill him. The detectives also determined his fall was no accident, he was pushed. Attempts are made to locate his girlfriend for a final goodbye, to no avail. At the end she is seen jogging by the subway station on her morning run, oblivious to the tragedy that has just unfolded below.

Excellent episode because of the confined time and space
mariettebliekendaal13 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yet another great Murdoch episode. The episodes revolves around an accident in the morning rush hour traffic. Events take place more or less in real time and on one location in the city. Mr Dilbert, head of archives, becomes a victim and is trapped between two vehicles. Hats off to the screenwriters: restrictions in time and space allow for psychological drama. Mr Dilbert is a pencil-pusher, but we know from previous episodes that he is actually quite brave and has his heart in the right place. This episodes reminds us that we often don't tell our loved ones what really matters until it is too late. Great episodes, with sadness, but also a feelgood effect.
