Constable John Brackenreid is directing mainly horse-drawn traffic in Toronto, when Mr. Flannery's motorcar colliding, after evading a pram, with elderly civil servant Dilton Dilbert's horse-drawn carriage leaves the latter firmly pinned between both locked vehicles. Julia's medical investigation suggests that any attempt to free him will result in his fatal bleeding, so Brackenreid comforts the dying Dilbert while team Murdoch braves the tram driver demanding passage, and detective Watts uses his best German to calm down a mouthy, injured German tourist and passing-by impertinent reporter Louise Cherry needs repeated restraining. Evidence that the car was sabotaged and some damage controlled leads Murdoch to suspect that the crash was no but staged, so he, Crabtree, John and Llewellyn Watts gradually uncover the nasty truth about a deceptive, vindictive plot.
