Better than the Rest
leantwon15 May 2018
So I just finished Suicide: Hell to Pay. It amazes me that a cartoon did a better job at Suicide Squad than the movie. Warner Bros. animation needs to give their film department some tips.

On the negatives, some of the dialogue was corny. But that's a small nitpick in an otherwise great animated film. The voice acting was pretty spot on. I cant wait for the next DC animated film.

Solid

Lately DC animated movies haven't been as good or as fun as they used to be. the last really good DC animated movie I remember watching was Gods and Monsters. that is until this movie. the strongest aspect of this movie is it's plot. it starts with a bomb action and from there on it's a thrilling experience throughout. I was taken from the very first minutes and this movie never lost my interest. the pacing is brilliant, spending just the right amount of time to establish back story and characters motivation. nothing more nothing less I see that DC keeps experimenting with it's art style, which is a welcome practice. and I hope that in the future they will refine it even further because stories this good deserve that. another little problem I had with it was it's sense of humor. they could have used better writing in that department. because mostly when it was trying to be funny, it just came off as cringy. and, in my opinion, harley quinn still remain under used. I feel DC never fully utilizes harley's fighting capabilities, instead opting to make her a purely comic relief character. and so it is hard to buy that she would actually be chosen as part of the suicide squad but all in all this is a great movie and a must watch for any and all DC fans

Surprisingly good - and violent...
paul_haakonsen25 August 2020
Normally animated superhero movies is not my first choice of entertainment, but when given the chance and opportunity to watch one, I will do so, of course. And here in 2020 I was given the chance to sit down and watch the 2018 animated DC movie "Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay".

Well, I can start by saying that I wasn't really expecting much, given the dubious 2016 live action movie. But hey, I hadn't seen "Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay", so I watched it. And it turns out, oddly enough, that this animated movie far outdid the live movie. Who knew...

The storyline in "Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay" was straight forward, so you shouldn't expect a Shakespearian masterpiece in terms of storyline, script and writing. However, what does work here is the fact that this animated movie is for a mature audience. There is a heap of graphic violence in the story, which really surprised me. As well as deaths of not only goons and those opposing the Suicide Squad, but also members of the Suicide Squad themselves. That was definitely something that I enjoyed.

And they had put together a good group of voice talents for the various characters in the animated movie. That really helps an animated movie along quite a long way. So that was a good thing.

As for the style of the drawing and the art, then I liked that. It had a hint of that classic 1980s cartoon style to it that I grew up with and loved then and still do. But still, it has just enough updated contents to make it appear not fully retro. That worked well for the animated movie in my opinion.

I enjoyed "Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay", and I am rating it a seven out of ten stars. This is definitely one of the better animated superhero movies that I have had the fortune of sitting through. It is well-worth the time, just forget that you ever saw that 2016 movie.

Suicide Squad Hell to Pay: A step down from other recent efforts
Platypuschow29 March 2018
I'm one of those weird people who really enjoyed Suicide Squad (2016) I also thought Assault On Arkham (2014) was great. In fact I like the Suicide Squad concept in general so upon hearing about Hell to Pay I was quite excited.

This time our team includes Deadshot, Harley, Boomerang, Copperhead, Killer Frost & Bronze Tiger in an interesting little three way battle against Zoom, Blockbuster & Banshee and third team of Vandal Savage, Scandal Savage and their goons.

The whole thing is over a mysterious card that saves a person from hell and their motivations are quite interesting. Then we have the usual brand of DC action and the film is a passable effort, but just that......passable.

Hell To Pay doesn't meet its potential and I'm not 100% on why that is. Maybe it needed more time, perhaps the story needed fleshing out more? Regardless it didn't grip me like Assault on Arkham did.

I'd say this is a good watch for big fans, a passable one for casual ones but maybe a hard pass for everyone else.

The Good:

It's the Suicide Squad!

Interesting plot

Ties Flashpoint Paradox (2013)

The Bad:

Christian slater

Behaves like Assault On Arkham never happened

Harley looks like a dude in drag a lot of the time

Underwhelming

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

If a head is encased in ice when it explodes both it and the ice will still remain intact despite blowing everything up around it

Harley always walks that fine line between fascinating and deeply annoying

Amanda Wallers weight fluctuates dramatically between movies

not fantastic but not aweful

Loved the over arching story and some of the individual motivations, but some of the scenes and dialogue were very generic.

Definitely not one for the kids!
KieraLynnR6 October 2021
Not that I mind!

However had I not watched most of Arrowverse prior to watching this I wouldn't have know most of these characters and this movie doesn't give enough back story for these characters to feel relatable. I mean we know most of it, but still. For me, I need that to get attached to the characters and root for them. Out of all of the movies written and directed in this style following these stories with Batman, justice league, teen Titans, etc, this is probably my least favorite. But it isn't that bad! I'm not saying that at all! Still worth the watch. Maybe not for kids under 13 though!

No kids movie
suwandani6 April 2018
I started watching expecting to fall asleep midway. Instead I stayed awake way past my bedtime because the story was so interesting. It's best if you watched Flashpoint Paradox first (which is another excellent movie by the way), but it's not really required. a bit gory, but it's refreshing to see a movie where it's not afraid to kill important characters. Why is DC animated movies so good, yet the live action movies so bad I wonder.

Warning: Spoilers
The squad goes after a "Get of Hell Free" card that may or may not work assuming there is a hell and hasn't been used before. There are a number of bad guys. The film has zero plot or character introduction. It assumes you have seen the film and read DC Comics. There were a great number of voices including character voice Tara Strong as Harley Quinn who always has the best lines. I was a bit bored with the plot, which included male strippers, lesbians kissing, and a few pole dance

Ultra violent, good voice acting, nice story. If only the sequel to the live-action movie will do as well.

Has some good elements of spirituality, but lacks in most other places.
Animany9427 August 2019
Yeah, I'm not going to lie to you, I was excited to watch another Suicide Squad movie after the powerhouse Batman: Assault on Arkham. The story of Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is surprisingly thoughtful at its core with the matter of deserving to go to heaven when especially when you've spent your entire life doing things to surely make you end up in hell showing up when the squad and their enemies all go after this magical card to get out of hell free.

But I juist felt like the performances done by the actors lacked energy and that this great story element of going to heaven and redeem yourself wasn't explored enough.

The animation was pretty uninspired and generic in every way, but I'll give it that in this story where death is a central theme, you will have to prepare yourself for the departure of any character which is kind of a bold move. And the violence is not hidden and is more graphic and detailed here than in many other of these animated DC movies.

All in all, SQ: Hell to Pay is kind of dull without the upbeat nature found in earlier renditions, but is surprisingly thoughtful and takes risks we don't see every day in this kind of movie.

A Very Edgy Animated Film
Athanatos1733 April 2018
I've said it before and I will say it again, DC needs to use their animation department writers for the live action movies.

I was quite surprised as I had not payed attention to the rating and missed the R. The movie was quite violent and graphic for a DC movie, and the comedy is well placed to lighten the mood, but it was refreshing to see anime style violence in an animated "superhero" movie. It was also very interesting that the entire story revolved around a chance of true salvation, and served as a continuation of a previous DC film.

Suicide Squad lives up to the name, and though I am not one of the haters of the live action film, I feel this one was much better and leaves me wondering what could have been with the live action movie.

It's not the best suicide squad movie, but still good enough
ajax-kumar8 April 2021
Well, they are not exactly heroes... And that part of their character seemed lacking in the story. Otherwise a good plot with the usual good guys, bad guys and both wanting to outwin each other. It's a fun watch.

Didn't even finish it
crazelord23 February 2022
I watched this right after the surprisingly good Assualt On Arkham, hoping this would be a spiritual sequel. But unlike the unique heist movie style and cool animation of AOA, what I got was another one of the new 52 inspired generic DC animated movies.

Basically having the slower pacing and feel reminiscent of the Bruce Timm DCAU shows except missing the brilliant writing, direction, and action sequences those shows were known for (and with a less unique art direction). This screamed extended episode of a mediocre super hero show than movie.

Oh but they do try to compensate with making it "adult" with gratuitous blood and sexual aspects (which I'm no prude, I love when it's done well and fits the vibe but not just shoved in to make it edgy). Because that's how you know this isn't for kids but for us adults!

I miss when DC would try to make each movie unique instead of trying to mimic the MCU shared universe homogenous style in animated form.

Worth a watch
Paradox-Warrior29 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost, it's best to go into this movie either not having seen the previous Suicide Squad animated movie, Assault on Arkham, and forget about that completely godawful live action version, because neither have any bearing whatsoever on this film. As a point of fact (and spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen Assault on Arkham) that first movie ended with the Suicide Squad being free of Waller and Deadshot actually reuniting with his daughter so he could line up an insanely long sniper shot on Waller's head. Regardless of either, this movie seems to have absolutely zero connection with them. While it will help to know some of the DCAU (DC Animated Universe), like most DC animated these days it can be a bit tough connect this one to any others. I will say Justice League Flashpoint Paradox is a must, as that film does connect with this one, if you're going to get a major plot point/motivation for one of the characters that's revealed. Beyond that, however, if you were to watch the first Suicide Squad animated

Other than that little continuity confusion, the movie overall was quite good. It was hardcore violence and didn't flinch away from the gore, which is good considering these are vicious criminals who have no issue with killing. The casting choices were pretty good too, though I did think Slater wasn't a great fit for Deadshot. It was nice to hear Tara Strong back as Harley, though I don't think the character was really given enough to do here. This really was a story that focused on two or three members of the Suicide Squad, and had a pretty potent spiritual component to it. It's also pretty clear this was a one-shot since (and major spoilers here) a LOT of main, well-known DC characters die in this.

Still, on a whole, this was a pretty well done movie with an art style that seems like is become the standard for the DCAU since it was also used in Justice League Dark and the Constantine short, 5-episode webseries, and I'm not complaining about that because I think it's a good style. Overall, this would be good as a rental vs a purchase since, although it's a good movie and worth watching, I can't see it be re-watched very often to justify a dvd or blu-ray purchase.

Enjoyable DC film, but so predictable
Ingrouille1813 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Batman: Assault on Arkham was really good, I think it got Harley, Deadshot and Boomerang well, and got the point of Task Force X right; unlike Suicide Squad from 2016, which thought a bunch of criminals with guns, bats and boomerangs could fight back against Superman? Task Force X is meant for secret co-op missions, not that tripe. So I wanted to see where this DC animated universe would go with them, and just like Assault on Arkham, Hell to Pay gives our 'heroes' a fresh new adventure to go on.

The story takes place some time after the events of Assault on Arkham, Deadshot is tasked by Amanda Waller to find a "Get Out of Hell Free" card. Deadshot teams up with Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Killer Frost, Bronze Tiger and Copperhead to complete the mission. Meanwhile, Zoom teams up with his own group of villains to also find the card.

A interesting idea for a story with the Suicide Squad. I like that it's not some end of the world movie; strange how good a suicide squad movie can be when WB isn't shove their "End of the World" story on the masses. Also, I loved that this film went R rated. This is so much violence in these movies and it's toned down for the kiddies; not this one. Blood flies everywhere, it's Deadpool for DC.

The team this time around is better to say the least; black spider's replacement this time around is Copperhead. We're also introduced to Bronze Tiger who was a lot of fun. He was a lot of fun, and more memorable. Even though Deadshot looks and sounds different, he still feels the same. I liked this universes version of Banshee. One thing I liked was how the creators were able to bring in comic characters that's usually come off as goofy and add a new layer to them, like Professor Pig

One problem I have with this movie is how it deviates from the previous film; such as the end of Assault on Arkham where it seemed like Deadshot assassinated Waller, which is funny when they mention how she lost a ton of weight; you forget one but you leave in another? Zoom from the Flashpoint Paradox is one of the main characters, and even though they explain it, it just felt like a cheap way to put Zoom in the movie; you don't have to rely on established versions, just make your own version of the character. Speaking of characters, Vandal Savages daughters make an appearance, who are apparently just one character in the comics. Their plotline ultimately goes nowhere. Neither does the Dr. Fate storyline; just started feeling like Batman v Superman, not EVERYTHING has to be crammed into this thing. You were doing so well establishing this animated universe.

Another problem was how there's no new twists to it. Boomerang, Killer Frost, you know these two are greedy and that they'll 'betray' their teammates, you know which characters will do these things, and all you can do is wait for them to do it; it's so predictable. Harley Quinn is again only used for laughs and one liners; it's like when people say a characters' been 'flanderised' where a character trait becomes their only trait. Harley mentions the Joker but they never go anywhere with that, other than to reference Assault on Arkham. Ultimately you know Deadshot's the good guy, and Bronze Tiger acts like the wise old monk so you he's not gonna turn on anyone.

This movie also doesn't know which villain is the top dog; You have Vandal Savage, who they ultimately do nothing with so for his plot with Pig, you have Zoom as well, but you know he'll bite the bullet in the end.

Fan boy fun but not for kids
trimblair4 April 2018
I'm not sure why they feel the need to punch these up to R-ratings. This would have been OK for kids but the first few sentences were a GD and a "s-word" and then lots of blood and gore. That's fine I guess, but seems like a silly trend, all the fan boys of today started out as 10 year old kids with comics. So, I enjoyed this one. Good plot, moved along, not afraid to kill off characters. The overall motivation was a bit silly but it is a comic book. For a grown-up, this is a fun ride, lots of action and some comedy. I liked it.

What The 2016 Film Should Have Been
jeremycrimsonfox17 July 2019
Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay is an R-Rated animated movie that basically does better than the live-action film from 2016, which despite making a big return at the box office, was heavily panned by critics. The story is good, the characters are accurate to the comic, and there is blood. Lots of blood. If you are looking for something to wash the bad taste of the 2016 film out, this is it.

Surprised to see the good running of the animated version of Suicide Squad
HafizhMaulana2121 November 2022
A group of supervillains named Task Force X perform a mission that will kill their lives to steal a mystical object.

Maybe this is the real picture of Suicide Squad. Have a clear concept of the film with obvious conflicts. Unlike the live-action film, which is not good at execution. By playing super villains as a group and the main cast, this film is able to present a cruel impression and escape from previous superhero films. A lot of fighting action is much cooler and fiercer. The conflict presented is also very complex and dense with capable dialogue. The narrative about the world and the afterlife is an interesting presentation in seeing the development of Task Force X as a group that has a dangerous mission.

The presence of the character Deathshot as the leader of the Task Force X group looks extraordinary with a tough disposition. Harley Quinn presents a humorous yet evil side of the character. Copperhead here has a role that can complete the story, not just appear casually. Bronze Tiger has a crucial role in the film's very moving ending. The appearance and changes in frost's character are capable of being a surprising plot twist with the arrival of Zoom as someone who comes by surprise.

AWESOME movie
kishanj-1504130 March 2018
Lately DC has not been doing well in live actions movies and it has even seeped through their animated movies. But this movie puts them back on the map! It encompasses everything a Suicide Squad movie should be. The story, animation, voice actors were all great. One bad point would be that some dialogues can be slightly cringey but it's just a small flaw.

I highly recommend this movie. It's not just a good DC film but a good animated film for both comic and non-comic book reading fans.

A Bloody Good Time With Bite
Mysterygeneration19 March 2024
The film isn't shy about violence, making the action sequences exciting and impactful. The story's focus on a "Get Out of Hell Free" card adds a fresh layer to the characters' motivations and the overall plot. The film delves into the psyches of these villains, making them more than just one-dimensional bad guys. We see them grapple with their past sins and the possibility of redemption.

While some characters get fleshed out, others feel a little underdeveloped. The script isn't afraid to crack a joke, and some of the humor lands well. However, there are occasional moments where the dialogue feels a bit forced or cliched. These moments are infrequent enough that they don't spoil the overall experience, but they can take you out of the movie for a brief moment.

So GOOD it made me ANGRY!
fits-4701928 March 2018
This is the second suicide squad animated movie in a row (and the umpteenth dc animated movie) that is VASTLY SUPERIOR to the live action debacles this same company has put out. I was so mad watching this, DC has this great writing staff on payroll, why don't they do better with the live action? The plot, pacing, and action scenes were GREAT, i.e , the exact opposite of what they put in cinemas. The animation could have been a bit better, but was good enough that it didn't deter from the overall enjoyment. This thing just zipped along and was such a joy to watch. Looking forward to the next animated feature, which I already know will be better than whatever sad, live action still-birth they currently have in production.

Boycott DC and force a hard reboot
TheOneThatYouWanted14 July 2018
What the heck is going on with DC? They just made another animated film that doesn't s@ck! Seriously, I almost didn't even watch this because DC's track record is more or less in the toilet right now. We all already know all of their up coming live action films are nothing but a waste of money. You are a freaking idiot if you are paying money to watch anything to come out of the DC camp because REAL fans of DC know that the only way to get DC's live action universe to be worth a dime is to force a hard reboot and pretty much boycott any and everything to come from DC. I am not saying you need to stop watching DC films (even though frankly that would be an easier option); just stop financially supporting them. Just borrow the film from a friend or check it out from the library. We all need to do our part to save DC from being a total laughing stock.

Terrible
vonronge16 June 2018
It's got the plot from a bad Ninja Turtles episode with Captain Planet quality dialog and Samurai Pizza Cats animation. Top all that with a plain Jane version of Harley quin and Nicolas Cage in National Treasure level acting. The worst of all worlds. A five year old with brain damage might like it.

Enjoyable, but inconsistent and a little religious, oddly enough...
anmael30 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Decent character driven stories. There were definitely some times where it seemed like the writers got a bit lazy though. For instance, the Squad have a philosophical discussion about how all of the evil they have done and the lives they have takes would likely condemn them all to hell, then immediately thereafter Killer Frost Freezes a security guard to get into a building and for no real reason Harley walks up and knocks his frozen head off, like the conversation about redemption never happened.

What was even funnier was when DeadShot said after the next action scene that so far they hadn't killed anyone...huh? People were being killed left and right in this thing...

Also, Copperhead is fighting to win the day near the end and Waller blows him up with his implanted explosive as collateral damage to get Killer Frost. This didn't even give the team pause that Waller treated him as so expendable that in the service of HER goals while fighting for HER cause, he was used as just a disposable weapon. It seemed as though they should all have assumed they would be next. That REALLY seemed lazy...

Entertaining, but could have used another once-over for logical continuity:)

Lots and Lots of Villains
koltonbrett4 January 2022
Definitely one of the bloodiest and most violent DC animated movies. We get an interesting story but the big personalities aren't so big this time around. They fixed what was missing from the first Suicide Squad movie, Batman: Assault on Arkham, but didn't quite keep what that first movie had going for it. It was fun watching three different teams of villains face off.
