Cinema is an Art, not an Entertainment
mvch-0941314 September 2018
Film making was started as an Art, over the years it has been transformed as Entertainment. We rarely get a few movies that shows us Cinema is an Art, MANU is one of them.

MANU is a painting passionately painted by Phanindra Narseti.

But the movie is not for everyone. You know about Painter's obsession. An Artist has to know when to put the brush away, some might think the movie is extreme.

And the writing was awesome, he already proved himself with Madhuram. When I was watching the movie, I started having a doubt and confusion about the Theme and concept of the movie and as movie progresses the doubt has increased, but Phanindra Narseti cleared all my doubt with a single dialogue (I won't spoil it, but it's about "Perfume bottle breaks down but leaves it's smell" - people who watched the movie can re call it)

Finally, it's worth watching this movie which would take you into it's world for 3 hours (best thing was without songs and bulls**t)

9/10.

Manu - slowpoison , not everyone's piece of cake, fest for cult movie lovers!!!
adityapagadala-425258 September 2018
Its a pure art, thriller, love story with a quite tricky screenplay which breaks the boundaries for a regular perception in movies. As it is a simple revenge story but the way director narrated with a new perception made it magnificent movie kudos to phanindra narsetti for his guts. Its really rare watching art movies in TFI kudos to art director. cinematographer & music were excellent. Overall, some people may not like this movie due to its length & screenplay but if you connect to the directors point you will enjoy the movie a lot.

Esoteric with non linear screenplay, artistic values and phani's poetic touch!
meetharsha243656 August 2019
The story starts with two contexts going in parallel and you asking the question why? as you follow through, your why's are answered but by the time a "why" is answered, another "why" takes space on the screen and draws your attention for the next answer. This is continued all through the movie which is why the sole reason for a viewer to feel himself attached to the movie for 3 long hrs

The first 30-45 min of the movie is a bit hard to crack. It won't make sense until the next hour starts to reveal the answers for all the mystery that's there in the previous hour. I must say, the director took his time to explain every detail he brought onto the screen space. It's tough for the director to keep the audience engaged for 3 hrs and phani has done exceptional work in this aspect. This is completely justified after the end of the movie.

I am so amazed by the screenplay. I am sure the director himself may have had complications in writing the play for the very first time. one needs a lot of patience and thinking to sketch such a play and , there's no two ways about it, phani is one of those top directors in Indian cinema. His intelligence can be vividly scene in the flow of the movie.

While a scene is introduced and parked away for a while, before you get lost with the current running context, the director makes sure that you connect the dots by recalling the introduced scenes. Some time in the mid way, people may not follow why the director has played a scene that don't have relevance with the running context. However, why he made such a move will be appreciated only when you move forward "along with the screenplay", this is where you have the utmost fun when you start connecting the dots.

"the sets of manu" on YouTube shows the commendable hard work they put in to building the sets for movie. With such a low budget, I am taken aback with the quality of the movie. Especially, phani used his intelligence in creating lighting which would usually demand a heavy price for the same creation. Whatever the architect and director had conceived in terms of the sets, it was clearly seen on the screen.

What adds more to the movie is phani's magical dialogue writing. We all know, the philosophical and poetic person in phani through madhuram. Some refreshing dialogues were exchanged between the leads in the movie and one would immensely enjoy the whole track.

Not to be forgotten about the cameraman, can't imagine how few of the shots were shot, the expertise is commendable.

Finally, this movie is not to the crowd who enjoy direct entertainment. it's specific to the audience who loves to think through the movie.

I wish more and more of these comes into the market and I sincerely hope that people start accepting these kinds of films and encourage the young talent who are far better than the conventional movie makers.

Phanindra has a unique style of film making that no one can match his kind, this movie is a perfect example on his ability. Though it's lengthy, but then, by end of the show you can't stop loving it !

A Cinema should be judged on its own merits..
kardil-105982 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I had high expectations on this crowd funded movie.I even saw it on the first day of its release.though i was bit uneasy with all the unnecessary philosophical details (like how he explains about oceans vastness?)first half was engaging...I was expecting a reasonable explanation for everything...instead wt i got was a lame story with no real weight....ghosts trapping mouse to trap people..y cnt they instead trap men directly(they do it one time ,oh wait cos the scene demanded )..I liked the how one ghost didn't knw the other ghost..that crime scene was good..but it fall flat cos ghosts had to do silly things to kill people..we didn't need extra classes on philosophy or art or life...what really matters is the story n it fails...all other technical work(cinematography, music, production design) which is brilliant and a guide for small budget films go in vain ...it's a good attempt with bad story ...

Slow poison with Extraordinary making in every aspect.
manojsurakanti9 August 2019
This movie doesn't have a ny commercial elements, comedy, Elevations, songs and no complaints about technicians. every person starting from hero to the assistant for very small things in making did their complete for film. If one person is blamed for the "not a commercial success" its the director for not reaching the Audience pulse. He made an excellent debut with such a Great story and screenplay. this movie works only for few set of audience. movie cults can enjoy the film for fullest and its a word. Dont go for any YouTube reviews and website reviews and experience the film with A bit patience and Understanding the Every aspect of film.

Too Raw at times and Overcooked at Others
saibharadwajvedula2 August 2019
This film had some good ideas to bounce around but it seems like the director threw way too many of them hoping atleast few of them would stick to the wall. There are neither any character arcs nor character development throughout the entire film. Almost everything that the audience knows about the characters is because they literally say it out as to what they are, what they like and what they think. The supporting characters who could have been effectively used to create interesting drama or to reflect the nature of the protagonists, unfortunately have minimal dialogue and nothing great to offer on the table. The film is too raw at times, and over cooked at others, failing to find its space and strike a balance. The director, also wearing the editor's hat, was way too attached to what he shot putting it all in the film and thereby doing little justice to the editing part. Could have easily cut half an hour of the film. The production design is brilliant, the set pieces, the antiques and the lighting provide a surrealistic undertone to the entire film. The Cinematography is top notch.

Too much creativity spoils nativity. But still has to appreciate since it's a different variety.

Cinematography, color combinations, music top notch. Screenplay tests your patience when you see the movie for the first time. Recommended second time watch to connect all the dots. Movie lovers only will love this movie. People who came to relax will be much more frustrated.

Deluded work of emptiness.
AnirudhGod7 September 2018
When we go to a movie or listen to a story, as adults, we expect something that reflects our lives as human beings. As beings capable of thoughts, feelings and actions. To witness warmth between two people in love, if they are. We want to atleast understand, in the end, what the story wants to be. That's the problem with the latest movie Manu, directed by a debutant - Phanindra Narsetti. It doesn't understand what it wants to be. The movie feels chaotic and doesn't understand when to slow down and let moments sink in. What is it trying to say in the end? That, revenge is the only option for the defeated? That death is the only thing that puts end to evil? That, for love to prevail, death is the only answer? Or we are chained to the demons that consume us when evil? Maybe, I'm digging at nothing, because the movie doesn't really hold these messages to be emotionally impactful. The movie is too self absorbed with it's own pretentious musings. Sure, the effort gone through can be appreciated. There are some good exchanges that temporarily evokes a desperation to feel the warmth and high that Neelu evokes through her actions, but all of that fades when some ridiculous series of events happen and we lose a sense of tone that this movie was trying to set. I lost track of what I was feeling and I just wanted the movie to end. And it did. I feel pity. Pity for the self absorbed man trying to escape his bludgeoning reality.

Christopher nolan's touch to a telugu film
vanurag-080065 August 2019
Manu movie has been a great watch for me. I like different films with a different screenplay. Maybe it's hard to understand as a movie but if you try with patience you will surely get the greatness of this film which displays great emotion of loneliness, love, sadness and anger. Visualizing after life in a different way has been the main highlight of this film. Diologue are striking and kudos to director sir for your writing skill and making skills. Mainly the lead pair have been very impressive. Depection of emotions through diologues, shots and background will remain the best things of this movie. Finally Complex but convincing and engaging

Must Watch!!!
shanmukha_pisipati8 September 2018
I could hear the thumping of my heart as the theatre went into stunning silence. Dont go if you're habituated to watching regular cinema. but if you want something new, something you cant come out of, Watch Manu in your nearest theatre as soon as possible, before they find a regular masala film to replace it with.

Manu is more about the display of intelligence than emotions.
karnati2001 August 2019
Manu is original. It has it's own world backed my brilliant cinematography, fine set design. BGM was fantastic. But it's not for everyone. Boring at times. Tests your patience. It's like the autuer's work. But the director did not considered it as a product for audience. He treated the film like painting or a piece of music for his own personal amusement. No way you feel like it's made for the audience. But kudos to the Phanindra Narsetti for bringing something original and out of the box.

Hit/flop are ephemeral, art is eternal.
sandeepventrapragada989 September 2018
Manu is highly recommended if you like out of the box genres. Pure art! Stands out in all aspects except few parts of editing because unnecessary shots made manu a lengthy film. End of the day we have to check our verdict by recalling the whole film whether it digests or not in that case once if you can relate it to yourself it leaves you awestruck one of the best cinematic experiences ever. Manu is the highest and fastest crowd funded telugu film with the amount of 1cr in just 4days that's not a cakewalk for every short filmmaker in nowadays except for this creative dude phanindra Narsetti. The narrative structure is the major asset which was absolutely esoteric compared to his previous works.

Technically Brilliant
vineethvenkatdesa1 August 2019
Manu is really a new age film, this is not for everyone for sure, it's magnificent! Every frame depicts so much of depth and creativity. If you like non-linear screenplays, Im sure you're going to love it. Ithink phanindra narsetti is the only guy, who has guts to put reverse screenplay in a debut movie. Top notch background score. when there's no dialogue, cinematography speaks itself slow at times, but good watch! If you really want to enjoy the movie avoid spoilers.
