cakepops-4969522 September 2018
I absolutley love everything about this show! The art is amazing and so creative, the imagination that went into the show entirely is amazing! I had originally put this show on for my little one and instead i got caught up watching the show like a zombie with him. (No cleaning was done haha) It really is fun for all ages! It also teaches children and whom ever is watching it about compassion and communication so you can pull something educational from every episode. And let's be honest the world can always use more of that! And It always has something new in every episode that keeps you hooked all the way thru the entire season! I hope they create a second season!!!!!

For everyone
jbencker24 September 2018
This show centers around the girl Hilda who lives in a phantastical world featuring all sorts of creatures. Hilda is a very likeable character from the start: she is very brave, kind and always looking for an adventure but she isn't perfect. There are also great side characters like her mother, her friends David and Frieda and a number of mythical creatures. The show proves to be very imaginative as it comes up with many quirky and pecuilar creatures, putting a new spin on familiar concepts.

While the show centers around Hilda's adventure's it's also concerned with a lot of relatable themes like finding new friends, the question of what home is and family - which is represented by the heartwarming relationship between Hilda and her mother.

What stands out is the fact that there is no simple division in good and evil, the world Hilda inhabits is much more complex. Creatures that appear to be evil at first glance usually turn out to be anything but and conflicts always have two sides. Hilda, though, always manages to solve the conflicts with communication and compromise, offering a very positive worldview.

All in all it can be said that "Hilda" is a imaginative and intelligent show for both children and adult alike and I can only advise to watch it!

The Most Beautiful Thing That Happened In Animation Category Recently
rajifernando2 October 2018
This deserves all the praise. 30 seconds into the 1st episode, when that music hits with an amazing intro into the warm and cold mixture of calming colour tones to the not overly-simplified yet beautiful, sunday newspaper comic strip type art, unique and lovable characters...it's just perfect. The world she lives in, the people/things she meet, the plot...gotta give props to Luke Pearson for his books and Silvergate Media and Mercury Filmworks for making the pages come to life...this is such a treat. The interactions between Hilda and her mother makes it better.

This is more towards kids but you'll find yourself smiling at what they have to offer to the child inside of you. Some say it's Gravity Falls reborn... this show has so much heart. Try it. You won't regret it ;)

Melancholy at its finest

This feels so much like childhood. It a cozy fall evening near the fire. The colours and the artistic direction is stunning. In my childhood I used to read Calvin & Hobbes and Peanuts and it feels like going back to those small lighthearted adventures where you're immagnation is the limit. The creatures seem to be coming out of a child fantasy and they recall so much that part of me I always end up drowned in the atmosphere and wanting to come back to rewatch again the same adventure, for the simple feel of it, just like I'd always come back for the same old book of strips I had

Holy Macaroni!!

Ohhh my goodness! When i was browsing youtube one day, I came upon a Netflix commercial for this random show called Hilda. I thought to myself "why not" and clicked on the video. And let me tall you, that was a great decision. This new Netflix original is the best thing I have seen is months. It is a beautifully animated and coloured and no matter what your age, you should check it out. It might seem a bit boring to some people but if you liked Steven Universe or similar shows, chances are you will like this. Its a bit more catered to kids around the age of 7 to 11 but even I still find it amusing. I find they did an amazing job bringing this old comic back to life in animation form.

Mysterious, Adorable and Heartwarming in Every Right Way
elicopperman13 October 2018
Imagine what would happen if you combined the fantasy elements of Gravity Falls and Over the Garden Wall, and mix them in with both the practical humor of Calvin and Hobbes and the family and friend bonds of Laika's best works. You'd get a simple albeit engaging graphic novel turned cartoon series like Hilda. It's always good to stream new content on Netflix, because then you discover adorably wholesome gems like this.

Set in a world consisting of people and fantasy creatures, the series centers around a kindhearted and adventurous little girl named Hilda, who has lived most of her life in the wilderness, along with her mom Johanna and pet deerfox Twig. Upon moving to the city of Trolberg, she befriends two kids named Frida and David. With that said, a lot of the episodes center around the trio working out a situation regarding their scout activities, and this is where Hilda shines as the show's true star. She always knows the procedure whenever a creature like a giant, troll and even a raven is afloat due to her upbringing, but that does lead to her either screwing up or learning something different each time. It's always neat when children learn something new every day on top of what they already know.

In addition, the other characters all have their own pros and cons that work well with each other. Frida is a highly determined scout always trying to earn badges, but she tends to get too caught up in them and hates to face her own flaws. David can be easily frightened and anxious, but always tries to overcome his worries with the help of his friends. The relationship between the kids really feels genuine, as even when they disagree or even argue, they still work well with each other on their adventures and even develop based on what one thinks of the other. As for the rest, Johanna never minds the surreal creatures Hilda is around, but only when it depends on what Hilda is up to. As she wants what's best for both Hilda and her, the series' heart tends to bloom with their adorable mother-daughter bonding.

The last thing to really talk about is the wonderful animation, as the soothing color scheme helps paint the down-to-Earth feel of both the wilderness and Trolberg in a comforting aesthetic. If one is to recreate a setting with forests, city architecture and other wilderness features, they should definitely create it to resemble the real world, and this show does just that. Not to mention, the characters are designed in a simplistic cartoony style, which makes them look very appealing, even the more macabre ones. I know people get sick of cartoons that resemble the Cal Arts style, but this show presents itself as a breath of fresh air given how monotone the visuals are.

Needless to say, Hilda is a wonderful animated series that captures the innocence of childhood adventure through brisk story telling, relatable and endearing characters, and gorgeous animation. Whether you're a child or an adult, I definitely recommend giving this show a watch. It's one of the few cartoons nowadays that is able to invite its audience to join in the mystery on finding new characters and their curiously strange habits. I think if we can take away anything from this show, it's that like Hilda, we shouldn't put aide our childlike fun just because we are to grow up soon.

Good character driven stories
kvothetraspie24 September 2018
Very good show, the animation is extremely well done, and the character designs are charming, the show is very light hearted but surprisingly so they manage to keep that tone while keeping the tension on the adventures, I felt the first episode was on the slow side, but I stuck to it and watched the whole thing, if you do too you will find out why its getting so many good reviews.

It has something to teach about people and relationships but its not preachy about it, respecting the audience to draw their own conclusions.

I think this is a great show for kids and adults alike, give it a shot, if you like well crafted character driven stories you wont be disappointed, Im looking forward to more seasons.

Nostalgically British

This charmingly animated series is a delightful tale of childhood adventure. Hilda freshly moved to the city from her magical creature-infested forest home, navigates both supernatural pests and mundane social interactions with her school-mates. Hilda is attended by her elf-friend, Alfur, and a small deer fox, Twig, as well as human companions Frida and David, all of whom lend constructive perspectives on the events while playing an assigned archetype role. While formulaic, as most children's shows will be, the episodes capture a whimsical air of adventure and discovery, as Hilda continues to defy social expectations and dispel prejudices against the magical creatures she is ever so fond of. An outstanding detail to me, among the minutia of a well-orchestrated animated TV short, is the character integrity. Each character maintains flaws and principals in an entirely enjoyable and realistic manner. While still learning from mistakes, core traits are not switched at the drop of a hat, as often happens to antagonists in oversimplified children shows. Hilda is produced by Silvergate Media, a company known for successful children shows such as Octonauts (2010-present) and Peter Rabbit (2012-2016) and as such it is little surprise that the show has such simple elegance.

It's good but not that good
The score would be 6,8

It's got so many great reviews and I don't why("Yeah it is a great one, but you just have to endure the first couple of episodes" quote from reviews). I mean it's not that bad at all, but I could not rewatch a sesaon or even watch an episode twice and sometimes I got real bored during watching an episode.

I can sum up the show in one sentence without any spoiler: "Keep your friends and have a great relationship with your parents." This is the main thread and the stories just building this up, no matter how cool they are, they will always end up with this track in the end. I'm not saying that this makes the story preditcible, because it does not, It just gets real boring for me after a while.

The blue-haired girl who talks to monsters
petra_ste26 February 2019
This lovely animated series, with its grace and magical realism, reminds me of the works of the great Hayao Miyazaki. It's aimed at children, but adults can enjoy it as well - I certainly did.

Hilda (Bella Ramsey, also known as Game of Thrones' young Lyanna Mormont) is a spirited little girl inhabiting a world where mundane and supernatural coexist, so cities have walls to keep trolls out, magic birds fly over the town festival and ghosts can either haunt your sleep with nightmares or help you clean up your room.

Hilda and her mother (Daisy Haggard) move from their cabin in a wilderness where Elves and Giants roam to the city of Trolberg. The initially unhappy Hilda starts to enjoy the change and meets new friends, both other kids and magical creatures who manage to slip inside the apparently normal urban life.

Like its storytelling, the series' aesthetic is effective and deceptively simple, with minimalistic character design reminiscent of classics like Calvin & Hobbes and Peanuts, smooth animations and a color palette steeped in shades of oranges, browns and blues. It's a testament to the power of animation; this enchanting series would have been a garish mess if told in a CGI-heavy live-action version. Voice acting and music are perfect.

Recommended age: 6+. The tone is whimsical, lighthearted; magical creatures are mostly cute or comedic, like the rules-obsessed Elf or the supercilious Wood Man. However, a few more intense episodes may scare younger kids - I'm thinking Chapters 6 and 8, which are a notch creepier than the others.

After a successful first season with 13 episodes, Netflix has renewed Hilda for a second season.

One of the best animated shows ever.
Genti2629 September 2018
Hilda brings out the best out of kids entertainment, and it pushes the boundaries as to just how meaningful and flat out amazing animation can be. This is a show for all ages, but especially show it to kids around the age of 8, they will remember it for years to come and it may just be a classic for them when they grow up. In a world full of bad things happening constantly, and even worse kids entertainment (i.e. the recent Netflix animated film 'Next Gen'), Hilda is exactly the type of show that might just teach kids a positive thing or two.

Coming from a huge animation fan. This show could not click. It felt like a formula that is traditional but Netflix didn't commit enough. They said "Ya know let's make a series that makes $$$ and then dump it!"

What A Wonderful World This Girl Lives In
a34trgv115 December 2020
Hilda is a show I did not expect to love as much as I do. What could've been passed off as a decent show for children turned out to be a fantastic show for all ages. With an amazing cast of characters, creative world building and strong writing, this show stands toe to toe with the likes of Steven Universe as one of the best cartoons from the 2010s.

Based on the book series by Luke Pearson, the show follows the adventures of the titular blue haired girl, Hilda, alongside her deerfox companion Twig, her friends David and Frida, her elf scribe Alfur and her mother Johanna. Set in the quaint city of Trollberg, each episode of the show finds Hilda exploring the wilderness around the city and discovering fantastical new creatures. In addition to that she learns valuable lessons about actions and consequences, being a good friend and being responsible. The show wisely incorporates genuine stakes in each episode as well as a good amount of humor and a sense of wonder to this world so as to prevent dragging. The show also takes the time to add character to not just the fantastical creatures, but also the people of Trollberg.

Transitioning to the characters, just about every single one of the main cast is well developed, has a strong personality and have excellent chemistry with one another. Starting with our leading lady, Hilda is very much the epitome of an adventurous tomboy with a heart of gold. She's brave, curious, cautious and optimistic, making her a well rounded character audiences can relate to. Her deerfox companion Twig is brave like Hilda but also very loyal and friendly. Plus, he's just got an adorable design that makes me wish he was real. Hilda's Mom, Johanna is a very well written portrayal of a single mother. She's caring, she's helpful, she worries for Hilda and she's also resourceful when the moment calls for it. Alfur is a smart, honest little elf that comes up with genius plans to save the day and his fascination with all of Trollberg is always a treat. David and Frida are two haves of the same coin. David may be fearful and Frida's alot more brave but one thing they have in common is that they couldn't wish for a better friend than Hilda. Hilda actually helps David learn to overcome his fears and her and Frida may have their differences but very much remain good friends. Other notable characters that appear in the show include the librarian, the Wood Man, The Great Raven and the lost elf clan.

In addition to great characters, this show has a very talented voice cast behind it. Bella Ramsey plays Hilda beautifully and makes her sound like a real little girl with a heart of gold. Daisy Haggard gives a very good performance as Johanna, making her sound like a real caring Mom to a very adventurous girl. Ameerah Falzon-Ojo and Oliver Nelson fit the roles of Frida and David perfectly, with Ilan Galkoff providing a beautiful singing voice to David. Thomas & Friends fans will be happy to recognize Rasmus Hardiker as the voice of Alfur as he gives him such a cute and friendly voice that matches his personality.

Visually, the show looks stupendous. Mercury Filmworks and Atomic Cartoons provided the animation for the show and it looks amazing. The color palette has a nice autumn feel to it, the animation feels so smooth and natural and the designs of the characters are all unique fit with their personalities. I especially love the designs of the fantastical creatures and how no two creatures are alike. I once again have to bring up that Twigs design is so adorable. When he sleeps he curls up into a ball with his long tail wrapped around and it's just so cute.

Hilda is without a doubt one of Netflix's best cartoons and it's not hard to see why. It's got a great cast of characters, amazing animation, stellar voice work, and strong, clever writing. Really the only gripe I have is in Season 2, the head of safety patrol Erik Alhberg is just an arrogant town's hero who only cares about the glory. Thankfully the rest of the cast is so great I'm willing to let it slide. If you haven't seen Hilda yet, I highly recommend giving it a watch. I guarantee you'll want to explore this world too as much as Hilda.

Everything you want from a show
ThatGFFAN2 October 2018
From the moment I first saw the trailer I knew this was going to be a show unlike any other. Watching it was one of the best decisions I ever made. From episode 1 all the way to episode 13, Hilda kept me hooked and wanting to see more. From amazing and lovable characters, smooth and breathtaking animation, a cast and crew that really brings the show to life and a feeling of nostalgia that you just cannot begin to comprehend. A lot of people are saying Hilda has many similarities to Gravity Falls and Over the Garden Wall. I don't. The show is first off based on Luke Pearson's Hildafolk comics that have been out since 2010, well before GF and OTGW ever aired. The shows are all original in their own way and I feel people need to watch shows without comparing them to others. It makes the viewing experience better and more enjoyable. Hilda is amazing in its own way. In some ways it did things better then Gravity Falls and OTGW did. I could go on about how amazing Hilda is but quite frankly, watching it for yourself and making your own decision on how good it is, is better then reading reviews from random people online. And be sure to read the original Hilda books as well. Luke Pearson's world will suck you in make you smile. Such is the life of an adventurer.

A rather amazing cartoon!
planktonrules8 December 2018
"Hilda" is a British-made series about a strange little girl who lives in Scandinavia...and it's now being brought to the States by Netflix. It's a most unusual show...one that apparently has been approved for a second season and that is good news.

The story begins in the countryside. Hilda is a neat little girl who has the uncanny ability to interact with supposedly mythical creatures...such as trolls and elves. In addition, seeing these creatures doesn't seem to scare her in the least...even when the trolls are mountain size! After two episodes, however, she and her mother are forced to move to the city...and there she makes friends with two kids who become her comrads in her adventures.

To understand this cartoon, it's a bit like combining "The X-Files" with "Gravity Falls"...but still quite cute and unique. The show is also great for anyone who loves mythology...and my daughter REALLY loves that sort of thing and insisted we watch all 13 episodes in one sitting! Overall, quite fun and a truly unusual sort of cartoon that will keep you wanting more.

This. Show. Is. AMAZING! The visuals are just, wow! The story: intresting, mysterious, and charming. As an animator myself, I only dream the fluid-ness of the animation. Everyone who worked on this show is AMAZING! If you have netflix, this is a bingeable-must-watch show!

Do yourself a favour

I had such fears that s3 wasn't going to be what I wanted, that it wasn't going to deliver something... good? That it was going to be a let down in some way - because it feels like so much media is these days.

Hilda feels like such a heart show. It's filled with all the warmth you could conceivably want, nestled in the joyous valley somewhere between The Hobbit, Anne With an E, and Over the Garden Wall.

It's intelligent, and flush with life. It's where I want to be. I feel like Hilda is the kind of person I want to be, or the friend I wanted when I was younger, or some reflection of a neurological self - I don't know. But it makes me feel like I have friends when I feel lonely, and it makes meant to breathe forest air and make art. And that's good art.

Fantastical.
invisibleunicornninja2 April 2019
I would highly recommend this story for fans of fantasy. While there isn't much of an overarching narrative, and not much happens, there's still lots of enjoyable adventures with unique fantasy concepts. The animation is simple, yet beautiful. I will say though, the story is very slice-of-life. There isn't really anything new or interesting attempted in terms of plot. The setting and atmosphere are good though. The characters are pretty good for the most part, but some are a bit one-note. I can't really think of any character developments that anyone goes through. Don't get me wrong, this show is very enjoyable to watch, but it feels like more could've gone into the overall story and not just the setting and the various wonderful moments that make up the show.

My biggest complaint is the sound design. While the voice acting is all great, the sounds in this show leave a lot to be desired. At first its ok, but once you realize that every sound is a stock sound effect it gets really distracting. Every musical cue is something I've heard in countless other works already. That violin is the worst. If you've heard it, then you know what I'm talking about. It might sound like a small thing to some people, but the music can make or break a scene in some cases. I just finished binging the entire series, and I can't think of a single sound that stood out to me as being unique or interesting. For a whimsy fantasy story like this one, I feel like it could've benefited from a unique score. There are a lot of points where the background audio sounds like a stock phone ringtone or something.

I know I'm being a bit negative, but I still liked this show. It is flawed though.

Brilliant. One of the best animated series of all time.
Karaokuma18 November 2023
As someone who grew up in the 1990s, animated series are among my favorite things. I grew up with the best of Nickelodeon, the Disney Channel, Cartoon Network and all of that, so when I say that Hilda is one of the best animated series ever made, I mean it.

The animation is so beautiful, with such vivid colors and adorable (and terrifying) designs for the characters and creatures. But even the gorgeous animation takes a backseat to the writing, which is just incredible. Hilda avoids all the cliches of typical animated series and respects its audience. The writing is intelligent, deeply emotional and compliments the art style perfectly. It's also refreshingly optimistic, unlike a lot of modern animated series that rely on cynicism a little too much.

This is proof that television can be an art form, and easily one of Netflix's greatest accomplishments.

Fantasy Scandinavian Slice of Life
BabelAlexandria25 April 2021
My 8-year-old daughter was a fan of the graphic novels--not a huge fan, but she read all of them. She was not really interested in this show for some reason. But my 6-year old son loved it, and watched it while his sister was at gymnastics. It has its share of suspense and fearful creatures, but on the whole manages to be almost slow paced, but in a positive way, which fits well with the slow unrolling of the mysteries of the woods, and the new city to which Hilda has moved with her mom.
