It looks like Hollywood and movie theaters are going to have a lot to be thankful for very soon. That's because the Thanksgiving frame is shaping up to be an absolute juggernaut, with not one, not two, but three different films looking to sell a lot of tickets as we head into the holiday season, with Universal's musical "Wicked" and Paramount's long-awaited sequel "Gladiator II" leading the way. While the films couldn't be more different on paper, early box office tracking suggests they have something in common. Namely, general audiences are very interested in both of them.
"Wicked" is currently tracking for an opening weekend of $80 million or more domestically, while "Gladiator II" is eyeing an opening in the $65 million range, per early tracking numbers provided by Deadline. It's very early to start getting hyperbolic, but we could be looking at another Barbenheimer situation here. Last year, Greta Gerwig...

The most powerful sitcom crossover in the history of Pennsylvania is officially a double feature.
Back at the beginning of this month, Rob McElhenney sent the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fandom into a frenzy when he posted on-set photos from behind the scenes at an Abbott Elementary production, confirming that, eight months after the viral Glaswegian Willy Wonka nightmare got him and Quinta Brunson talking, a crossover between the two hometown sitcoms is finally in the works. Many of those same fans were dismayed to learn that the planned collaboration would happen on Abbott Elementary’s home court, where the show’s comparatively clean and upbeat tone (coupled with ABC’s censors) would limit the Always Sunny cast’s aptitude to be equal parts appalling and hilarious.
Then, on Friday, Variety blessed us with an exclusive scoop that opens the door for profane comedy played off of the already put-upon Willard R.

Timothée Chalamet was in good company during a visit with fans this weekend, where he was more than likely asked to call them by his name.
On Sunday, the Oscar nominee made a surprise appearance at New York City’s Madison Square Park, where hundreds of fans gathered to compete in a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest.
In videos shared to social media, several doppelgängers posed for photos in the sea of people before the Dune star joined them, resulting in some genuinely shocked faces. A frenzy broke out as he hugged his admirers and posed with them.
Incidentally, Chalamet didn’t win the contest, arriving with a mustache and a shorter head of hair — after portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
The contest took place after flyers popped up around the city with a Qr link to the event’s Partiful page and the offer of a $50 cash prize.

Moana 2 has revealed which songs are being submitted for Oscar consideration, and the choices highlight an unusual Oscar “rule” Disney inspired!
Whenever a new Disney animated movie hits, folks are ready for a song from it to be nominated for an Oscar and, more often than not, winning. It’s been that way since the 1990s and has led to some intriguing choices and winners.
With Moana in 2016, it was no shock that Tony-award-winning writer/composer Lin-Manuel Miranda provided some great songs. The one nominated for the Oscar was “You’re Welcome,” which lost the award to “City of Stars” from La La Land.
Miranda won’t be handling the writing duties for Moana 2. Instead, the songs come from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, best known for the acclaimed unofficial Bridgerton: The Musical and getting a huge break with this film.

These relationships were with rappers Tyga and Travis Scott.

He's played warlord Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the God of Thunder in the MCU, actual Optimus Prime in Josh Cooley's Transformers One, and Kevin in 2016's Ghostbusters. Now, having long since proven himself one of Hollywood's most charming guys, Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth is in the frame to play Disney's very own Charming guy — Prince Charming, that is. Per Deadline's reporting, the Extraction man is in talks to lead a live-action movie about Disney's quintessential royal suitor from Paddington and Wonka director Paul King.
First confirmed to be in development just last week, King's Prince Charming movie is set to see the British filmmaker reteam with regular writing collaborators Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker to offer a new angle on one of cinema and literature's most iconic — and arguably most two-dimensional — characters. Whilst plot details on this one aren't forthcoming just yet, we do at least...

It looks like Disney has found its “Prince Charming.”
Chris Hemsworth is in talks for the new live-action film from “Wonka” and “Paddington” filmmaker Paul King. The project, ostensibly about the prince from “Cinderella” who goes on a quest to find her after she leaves a single glass slipper behind, is based on a script that King wrote with Jon Croker and frequent collaborator Simon Farnaby.
Disney had no comment.
Hemsworth is obviously a part of the larger Disney family, having essayed the role of Thor in many Marvel Studios movies beginning with 2011’s “Thor” and, most recently, in Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” in 2022. Earlier this year, Hemsworth played wasteland maniac Dementus in George Miller’s “Furiosa” and took on the role of Optimus Prime in Josh Cooley’s “Transformers One.”

We recently learned that Paddington and Paddington 2 director Paul King is on board to direct a Prince Charming movie for Disney. Whether it's a prequel or sequel remains unclear, though the latter seems more likely with the addition of Chris Hemsworth.
According to Deadline, the Avengers: Endgame and Thor star is in talks to play the iconic character. It's an intriguing role for Hemsworth in a year that's seen him widely praised for his work in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Transformers One.
Prince Charming plot details are being kept a secret but King is co-writing the movie alongside Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker. As a result, it will likely be his next feature following last year's Wonka.

After bringing the origin story of Willy Wonka to life with last year’s Wonka, Paul King has been tapped by Disney to direct a live-action film about Prince Charming. While many Disney movies feature a Prince Charming-type character, the actual Prince Charming appeared in Cinderella as a love interest to the title character. However, according to insiders, this Prince Charming movie “will not specifically be linked to Cinderella.” Simon Barnaby and Jon Croker are set to co-write the script alongside King.
Deadline now reports that King may have found his Prince (no pun intended). It’s now being said that Chris Hemsworth is now in talks to play the titular character. Disney has not made a comment yet. The plot details are yet to be known, but the “Prince Charming” trope is a tradition among classic Walt Disney animated films that feature a princess like the aforementioned Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Disney is continuing to explore its classic characters with new live-action takes on its animated films, as this has been a lucrative business for the studio for some time. We recently learned that Paul King ("Paddington") is now set to direct a "Prince Charming" movie for the Mouse House which, on the surface, seems like a purely money-driven idea. Today, however, we also learned that none other than Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, is in talks to star in the lead role, which changes the game.
According to Deadline, Hemsworth is being eyed to place the titular character in the "Prince Charming" movie. Hemsworth is coming off of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and the animated "Transformers One." There’s been a strange phenomenon in Hollywood of late – films that are song-and-dance musicals, paired with marketing that seems designed to hide that very fact. The song-packed Wonka wasn’t advertised as such; the Mean Girls musical adaptation was soundtracked by Olivia Rodrigo songs in its trailers rather than its own numbers; even Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga spent the Joker: Folie À Deux promo tour claiming the film isn’t a musical. And while that phenomenon isn’t exactly new (audiences coming to Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd back in 2007 weren’t informed by the trailers that it was a full-on Stephen Sondheim adaptation), it seems particularly prevalent today.
One film that’s been more overt about its status as a Broadway adaptation is Jon M. Chu’s two-part take on Wicked. If early teasers were oddly song-lite, more recent trailers are clearer about it being a musical.

Disney has tapped Paul King, celebrated for directing the heartwarming ‘Paddington’ series and the recent ‘Wonka’ movie, to helm a new live-action film about Prince Charming. This movie looks to delve deeper into the character of Prince Charming, much like ‘Wonka’ explored its title character beyond the chocolate factory.
King’s direction is expected to offer a traditional take on the fairy tale prince, steering clear of the modern, edgy reinterpretations that films like ‘Shrek’ have popularized. Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker, who collaborated with King on ‘Paddington 2’, are joining him in writing the screenplay.
Farnaby is also known for his work on ‘Wonka’ and the UK sitcom ‘Ghosts’.
The film’s narrative seems poised to explore why Prince Charming is such a discerning character who can be found chasing after a woman with just one shoe. It’s an interesting twist on the archetype that often portrays him as merely a handsome,...

Paul King is headed to Disney.
After being attached, for many years, to their live-action version of “Pinocchio” (eventually directed by Robert Zemeckis), King is back at the Magic Kingdom to direct “Prince Charming,” TheWrap has learned. He will also co-write the script with Simon Barnaby and Jon Croker.
Prince Charming, of course, is the character from “Cinderella,” who goes searching for the title character using the glass slipper she left behind. Plot details of this spinoff story are being kept under wraps.
King was attached to “Pinocchio” way back in 2018, after Sam Mendes departed the project. Farnby, who worked on the scripts for King’s “Paddington 2” and “Wonka” (and appeared as an actor in the first “Paddington”), wrote King’s version of “Pinocchio,” as well.
Earlier this year, King told TheWrap that he loved “Pinocchio” but that “it didn’t work out for personal reasons, which had nothing...

Prince Charming, the love interest of many a Disney princess, is getting his very own feature film.
“Wonka” filmmaker Paul King, who also helmed the first two “Paddington” features, is directing “Prince Charming” for Disney. King, Simon Barnaby and Jon Croker are co-writing the screenplay, of which plot details have not been confirmed. It’s unclear if the film will be live action or animated.
In classic fairy tales, the Prince Charming character is one who rescues a damsel in distress and sets out to save her from evil forces/ stepmothers. See: “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Rapunzel” and basically any other 20th century Disney movie. In those films, however, he’s usually a side character and not the main star. Though Prince Charming was originally the love interest of Cinderella, this project will not be specifically linked to the curfew-breaking princess, according to Deadline Hollywood, who reported the news...

Exclusive: After helping bring the Paddington franchise and a new Willy Wonka movie to life, director Paul King has his sights set on another iconic character. Sources tell Deadline that King has come on to direct a new Prince Charming movie at Disney. Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker are co-writing along with King.
While plot details are unknown, the Prince Charming character has many origins throughout literature but when it comes to Disney is usually linked to the character that becomes of the love interest of many of the Disney princesses. While many have linked him to classic animated pics like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, his true origin is Cinderella, where Cinderella’s actual love interest is Prince Charming.
As for the the film project, insiders do add that the film will not specifically be linked to Cinderella.

Timothée Chalamet’s popularity has been off the charts since he participated in the Dune series. Fans anticipate his next project after he played the role of Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi adventure series.
However, the actor is set to appear in a biopic for his upcoming role. A Complete Unknown will feature the Lady Bird actor in the shoes of Bob Dylan. Chalamet’s acting ability will be put to test in the upcoming film, which might be his chance for an Oscar.
A potential Oscar-worthy performance
Timothée Chalamet has delivered some of his best performances in films like Lady Bird, Little Women, Call Me by Your Name, and several others. The actor was also a part of the popular Dune series by Denis Villeneuve, which further helped him establish his name in the industry.

Timothée Chalamet as legendary songwriter and performer Bob Dylan discovers the cost of celebrity fame in the official trailer for James Mangold’s biopic A Complete Unknown.
Part of that price is having to meet audience expectations in the 1960s music world that came between the artist, his songs and his fans, Chalamet as Dylan complains in the preview. “They just want me to be singing ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ for the rest of my goddamn life,” Dylan says at one point in the latest look at the Searchlight film.
Having arrived as an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, Dylan attempts to change the course of American music but grows restless with having to be defined as his success builds. “If anyone’s gonna hold your attention on a stage, you have to kind of be a freak,” Dylan observes as...

While die-hard fans may primarily remember Timothée Chalamet for his early role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, the actor is now a household name and in high demand across Hollywood.
Following his standout performances in Oscar-nominated films like Lady Bird, Call Me by Your Name, and Little Women, Chalamet has landed major roles in blockbuster projects. His latest endeavors, Dune and Wonka, have both achieved significant success.
Given his popularity, it’s no surprise that Chalamet can afford to be selective with his projects. When you’re in such high demand, you have the luxury of choosing roles without the pressure of accepting just any offer.
In this context, Chalamet was recently asked by The New York Times about the possibility of appearing in a superhero film—a genre he has yet to explore.

Even if his early role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is what die-hard fans would remember most about Timothée Chalamet, the actor is today in high demand worldwide and a household name in Hollywood.
Following his triumphant roles in the Oscar-nominated films Lady Bird, Call Me by Your Name, and Little Women, Chalamet has secured major motion picture roles. The Dune trilogy and Wonka, his two most recent projects, have both become enormous hits.
It is understandable that Chalamet is an actor who can pick his projects. When you’re in such high demand, you – of course – get the opportunity to choose what you want to do without the pressure of having to play just about any role.
In light of that, Chalamet has recently been asked by The New York Times about his potential appearance in a superhero movie, a genre the young actor has not yet been in.

It's safe to say you haven't seen Hugh Grant quite like this. The lovable character actor has always been something of a chameleon, appearing in everything from family-friendly comedies (most recently "Paddington 2") to murder-mysteries (director Rian Johnson's "Glass Onion") to harder-edged genre movies (Guy Ritchie's "The Gentlemen" in 2019 and "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" last year) to blockbuster musicals and adventure movies -- hello, scene-stealing appearances as an Oompa Loompa in "Wonka" and as Forge in "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." His next role is utterly unlike any of those previous ones, however. Leave it to A24 and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods to bring out a whole new side of him in "Heretic."
Let's put it this way: If you ever thought that nothing could possibly be more annoying than religious missionaries going door-to-door to spread the good news of whatever they might be hawking,...

Timothée Chalamet transforms into Bob Dylan for the music biopic of the year.
James Mangold directs Chalamet in the long-gestating “A Complete Unknown,” which captures folk singer Dylan’s rise from his late teen guitar-playing years to performing at the iconic Newport Folk Festival in 1965. “Walk the Line” helmer Mangold adapted the screenplay from Elijah Wald’s book “Dylan Goes Electric!,” which was released in 2015.
The official synopsis reads: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s, ‘A Complete Unknown’ follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts — his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation — culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.”

Bell Expands Warner Bros Discovery Pact For HBO & Max Content And Ends Legal Action Over Rogers Deal
Canada’s Bell Media and Warner Bros Discovery have extended their pact for HBO and Max content, and at the same time ended their legal dispute related to Bell rival Rogers.
The multi-year extension comes just 17 months after the previous licensing pact between the Canadian network and the U.S. studio was struck. The new agreement will see subscribers to Bell streamer Crave “have continued access to a vast library of premium content for the foreseeable future,” according to the network.
At the same time, Bell and Wbd also confirmed they have settled “all matters” in their recent dispute regarding Bell’s suite of Discovery-branded channels.
Wbd had struck a deal with Bell rival Rogers for English-language lifestyle fare, which had previously run on Bell for 30 years. This led to legal action being taken in July, but that has now ended. Details regarding changes to Bell-owned Discovery channels will...

Todd Phillips’ sequel Joker: Folie à Deux bombed in its box office debut with a domestic opening of $37.8 million, well behind expectations after becoming the first Hollywood comic book movie in history to earn a D CinemaScore from audiences. Exit polls are equally grim as audiences express their unhappiness with the antihero-musical mashup, which did less than half of the business the first Joker did in its launch, despite costing more than three times as much to make, or $190 million.
The Joaquin Phoenix-Lady Gaga pic was expected to open to at least $50 million to $60 million, but projections were continually downgraded throughout the weekend as traffic stalled. Even on Saturday, most rival studios showed it opening to at least $45 million to $47 million, while Warners reported $40 million on Sunday. Six years after Saudi Arabia lifted its 35-year ban on cinema, the kingdom continues to make significant strides as the Middle East-North Africa region’s top movie market with audiences flocking to movie theaters lured both by Hollywood blockbusters and a growing number of local hits.
Despite a slight drop-off in box office numbers to date this year, Comscore analysts firmly believe Saudi remains a strong, healthy market, with considerable room for growth.
Ahead of the second edition of the Saudi Film Confex industry conference in the kingdom’s capital of Riyadh that aims to boost the local film industry, Variety spoke to the Comscore team to break down recent figures that show a 5% dip in admissions combined with a 13% drop in box office grosses. The latter is due to a government move to lower ticket prices.

The negative word-of-mouth around Warner Bros.’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” is already dealing big blows to its box office fortunes. After making just $11.1 million on Saturday — a drop from the $20.1 million earned Friday even after the $7 million from Thursday previews are removed — opening weekend estimates for this $190 million budget tentpole have now fallen to $39 million.
Not only is that below the $50-55 million pre-weekend projections and just 40% of the October record $96 million opening of the first “Joker” in 2019, but it is now nearly matching the $39 million opening of Sony’s maligned 2022 Marvel film “Morbius” and could slip even below that should walk-up ticket sales continue to sag.
Todd Phillips’ film, a courthouse drama with dream musical sequences, has seen its Rotten Tomatoes score fall to 33% critics and 31% audience. CinemaScore polls yielded a D, the lowest grade ever for a comic book film.

Keeping up with the vast and enchanting world of Harry Potter, fans often come up with whimsical and deliciously intriguing theories surrounding the character and the universe. This time, we’re back with a rather far-fetched theory that seems to weave together two pieces of literature—J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World and Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

While this theory might seem bizarre at first, it truly holds a hint of chocolatey imagination beneath the surface.

It's fortunate that Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is no stranger to booing audiences, because "Joker: Folie à Deux" isn't exactly a crowd-pleaser. Director Todd Phillips' follow-up to his billion-dollar 2019 hit "Joker" made history this week when it received a D CinemaScore from opening day audience polling.

One can vividly remember the ‘golden’ days when Hugh Grant would be on our TV screens, wooing women with his charming blue eyes, electric smile, and impeccable line delivery in many of his romantic films. Those were the times when ‘romance’ was still very much ‘alive’ and ‘real’, thanks to the wicked charms of actors like Grant, his ‘arch-nemesis’ Colin Firth, Matthew McConaughey, and many, many more.

Tracking suggests the Warner Bros. movie could open anywhere from $50 million to $60 million domestically, a subdued number considering it came on tracking three weeks ago to $70 million. In 2019, Joker debuted to a dazzling $96.2 million on its way to a record-shattering worldwide total of $1 billion0pls.
Philllips’ polarizing, R-rated seqel — which made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival to mixed reviews — is a genre-busting, music-infused sequel that strays outside the comfort zone of the typical fanboy-fueled comic book pic.
Indeed, neither Phillips nor Phoenix was sure about making a sequel, and for a time contemplated putting on a Broadway show instead, before ultimately committing to the movie.

Joker: Folie à Deux might have a bunch of characters singing in it, but does that make it a musical? Short answer: yes. Find the long one below…
Since discussions around a potential Joker sequel first began swirling in 2019, everyone seems to have been very worried that the follow-up to the edgiest comic book movie on the planet would be a musical.
Inspiration first struck when Joaquin Phoenix dreamt of seeing Arthur Fleck singing and dancing on stage. He and director Todd Phillips even briefly considered giving Joker his own Broadway show.
Music, then, has clearly formed a central pillar of Joker: Folie à Deux from the beginning. But whether or not that makes it a musical has remained up in the air. Phillips and star Lady Gaga have both separately said they’re not entirely comfortable describing it as such, before describing the film in a way that almost...

Joker: Folie à Deux hit tracking three weeks ago and looked set to open with $70 million, a $26 million drop from 2019's Joker. That's still a respectable sum in the post-pandemic landscape, but those projections continue to drop...and drop.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the sequel could now open in North America with as little as $50 million, a disappointing start for a movie which the trade says "is expected to be a major player in the Oscars race."
Advance ticket sales have been lower than anticipated and, overseas, Warner Bros. Discovery is hoping Joker: Folie à Deux can debut with $80 million - $85 million (it doesn't arrive in China and Japan until several weeks from now).
Five years ago, Joker debuted with $96.2 million domestically and $155 million overseas, eventually earning what was then a record-breaking $1 billion when all was said and done at the worldwide box office.
The trade also confirms that,...

When Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux came on tracking three weeks ago, forecasts showed the Warner Bros. movie opening to $70 million — $26 million lower than previous installment five years ago, but still a respectable sum. Since then, projections have slipped to anywhere from $50 million to $60 million.
Why the drop?
The polarizing, R-rated movie — which made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival to mixed reviews — is a genre-busting, music-infused sequel that strays outside the comfort zone of the typical fanboy-fueled comic book pic. While 2019’s Joker earned comparisons to the earlier works of Martin Scorsese, the sequel is a far slower paced journey that focuses on the interior lives of its two leads. Critics have praised the movie’s overall beauty, its performances and its crafts, but dinged it for its narrative. “For a movie running two-and-a-quarter hours, Folie à Deux feels narratively a little thin and at times dull,...
