Drive Panhale Off a Cliff

I guess it is fashionable to think of Martin as a mess. Louisa is certainly a close second. Her obsessiveness with her child is beyond just a caring mother. She really flips over the top here when the little boy utters what sounds like a word. But that is a small story. First of all, a new minister comes to town precisely at the time of the Penhale wedding. She has a medical condition and a bunch of baggage. But it doesn't help that everyone treats her badly. Joe then goes to see Martin and is diagnosed with a kidney stone. He has all the symptoms, including the need to urinate frequently. He is also in real pain. When the minister talks with the couple, it is obvious they have not thought about their future and each of their needs. Bert Large is overproducing whiskey and tries to use it at the pre-wedding party and knocks off most of the attendants. There are even more surprises at the wedding. When all is said and done, Martin seems like the sanest one of all.

Penhale is an idiot

I love this series for the most part as it reminds me a bit of Northern Exposure with the quirky characters. However, PC Penhale's character is getting dafter and is definitely coming across as someone who was absent with G-D was giving out intelligence. I believe in reincarnation and I just can't fathom a real person holding the job he does yet he never seems to get anything right. Except for him, I would not have any complaints about the series.

Great but

Martin and Lousia are obviously improving on their relationship.

The whole reason I took the time to review this is that, in the very last scene where Louisa hears James say, "Doc", Martin then walks off. I would have thought maybe Martin could have atleast walked into the room with Louisa to show support or whatever, especially after having a conversation with Ruth earlier about this.

One of the best episodes
TheDudeReviewsStuff28 June 2023
Imagine if Monty Python wrote for Doc Martin. That comes close to the absolute lunacy this episode contains.

With Joe and Janice getting married after 8 weeks dating, Bert serving up straight whiskey for the wedding party, a new curate with DVT covering for the vicar who is away, the local plonker girls infecting each other due to poor hygiene, Joe presenting symptoms of a kidney stone, Louisa going bonkers about baby James saying his first word to everyone but her, and more utter insanity.

On the positive side Buddy finally gets the respect and love he deserves. Best of all, Martin comes across as the voice of reasons and saves the day once again.

It just doesn't get better than this in Portwenn.

Is it me, or does the town seem stupider than usual in this one??

In this first episode of season 8, Constable Penhale is dumber than usual....as if most of the town apparently! It seems that with little time to think about it, he's about to marry a young lady who's already been married twice...and the entire town prepares for the wedding. But so many things go wrong, you can't help but wonder why they are marrying now. Among the many problems, the brides maids all come down with a contageous virus, the priest has disappeared and a very nervous curate is taking his place, Penhale has kidney stones and the caterer, Bert, is an idiot (more so than usual) and only provides whiskey. As for Martin and his wife, their problems actually seem very minor when their biggest concern is just whether or not to get a dog.

I have enjoyed "Doc Martin" and have seen every episode and movie before this one and I have to say the biggest thing I disalike about the show is Penhale. His character is ridiculous...no one is THAT stupid...especially a policeman. This whole quickie marriage thing seems pretty normal for Penhale, however, so the ridiculous plot kinda works. Overall, a decent beginning to season 8...but not among the better episodes because so many people show worse judgment than hamsters.

Oh, and I should mention that the Doctor's actions when there is resiratory arrest are DUMB and the writers should have known better. He literally slugs the dying person in the chest AND when he begins doing chest compressions he drops down onto her chest with his hands in a manner that probably would have crushed her ribcage. This is inexcusable for a medical show where they should have known better.

Panhale and his Completely Mismatched Young Hot Bride
TheFearmakers24 April 2020
Who made the decision to have bird-faced Penhale, the dumbest dummy on earth, to hook up with a gorgeous young blonde? Bad idea. They have no chemistry other than both being dumb.

As for the rest of this episode, and season, it's all so different. Seems lower budget. The town seems more like a location to film in instead of a world they all exist in.

PS: And kidney stones don't just "pass" from the bladder into the toilet, or wherever you urinate. The "passing of a kidney stone" is when they pass from the kidney (or drop) and move to the bladder, where the extreme pain comes from. Penhale is shown passing it from the bladder, which is the easy part.
