The 96th Oscars telecast will be broadcast on Sunday, March 10 and air live on ABC at 7:00 p.m. Et/ 4:00 p.m. Pt. We update predictions through awards season, so keep checking IndieWire for all our 2024 Oscar picks.
The State of the Race
As expected, the 2024 Oscar nominations for Best Original Song are mostly artists that own an Oscar statuette (honorary Oscars still count!).
Although “Barbie” had a rougher time elsewhere, it did get its maximum number of nomination slots here, with “Dance the Night” singer Dua Lipa’s loss being a gain for “I’m Just Ken.” Now, the question becomes whether the latter has a chance at the Oscar, or will the longtime frontrunner “What Was I Made For?” ultimately win.
Split votes are never a thing to really count on, the Academy is pretty good at reaching a consensus when a project has multiple nominations within a category,...

Another year, another Diane Warren campaign to finally get herself that Oscar. She's already got an Honorary Award, but the competitive prize eludes her. This year, the songwriter's best bets are Flamin' Hot and 80 for Brady, though Warren also penned an original tune for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. After she got a in for the virtually unreleased Tell It Like a Woman, anything's possible.
This got me thinking about the other people the Academy nominated constantly without ever giving them the win. Who's the Diane Warren in the categories beyond Best Original Song? Trying to answer that question, I dove deep into Oscar history, counting who's the most honored person who never won their respective race for gold. I focused on feature films and living artists, those who still have a chance to win or increase their record. Like Warren, some names are back in contention this season.

Imagine the 96th Academy Awards ceremony opening with an epic “Barbie” musical medley.
According to Puck’s “What I’m Hearing” newsletter, The Academy wants it to happen. Who foots the bill on the production is another story. Typically the studios are responsible, but as Matthew Belloni writes, “Warners is selling off movies to raise money these days. By the time the Oscars arrive, marketing and awards budgets are spent, so who knows?”
But with three major songs vying for awards recognition — Dua Lipa’s disco pop ode “Dance the Night,” Ryan Gosling’s climactic centerpiece “I’m Just Ken” and Billie Eilish’s ballad “What Was I Made For?” — “Barbie” is the obvious pick for an extravagant Oscars musical number.
Director Greta Gerwig has been out campaigning for the three songs, which will all likely make the original song shortlist next next month, but only two songs from a given film can land nominations,...

Exclusive: S.S. Rajamouli is currently assembling a production team for a new movie about the birth and rise of Indian Cinema.
Rajamouli, whose Rrr racked up an Oscar win and over $166M WW, is not directing, we understand. At $130M, Rrr is the third highest grossing movie in Indian cinema. Rajamouli is ‘presenting’ which over in India is a bigger title than producer on a film, though akin to how Hollywood views the role of a producer.
The new biopic about Indian Cinema is not yet titled, though reps for Rajamouli promise it’s a “magnum opus telling” which will be told “on a huge scale and canvas.”
Rrr followed the fictitious telling of two legendary revolutionaries and their journey away from home before they started fighting for their country in the 1920s.
Rrr won an original song Oscar this past spring for its single “Naatu Naatu” written by M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose.

In about four years time, Andrea Iervolino hopes to launch a stadium and TV studios into orbit and broadcast the world’s first zero-gravity Mma fight from space. He’d originally thought that Galactic Combat — his idea for reality-show-meets-sports-tournament following a group of spacebound fighters — would be ready sooner, within two or three years, but he’s says some “technical issues” among his aerospace partners has pushed his expectations back. “But it’s not really far away.”
Until then, the Italian producer will sadly have to contend with work on solid ground under Earth’s less exciting gravitation pull, work that includes — among a wide array of activities across entertainment, sport and beyond — being one of the producers on Michael Mann’s all-star and much-anticipated Venice-bowing biopic Ferrari. Under the Ilbe banner he runs with his business partner, rum heiress Monika Bacardi, he was brought in to provide the Italian...

Italian film producer Andrea Iervolino, whose credits include the Oscar-nominated Tell It Like a Woman and Michael Mann’s upcoming Ferrari biopic, is laying plans for a new film studio complex in Tuscany.
Iervolino says the $55 million (€50 million) backlot, Tuscany Film Studios, will be located outside Florence and could begin operation as early as fall 2024.
“My idea is simple,” Iervolino told THR Roma. “To create an avant-garde film hub in a place that is, in itself, one of the most beautiful in the world, where stars would gladly come to shoot … I was in Rome the other day, dining with James Franco. I told him about the project, which is already in the operational phase, and he said, ‘I would come to shoot there tomorrow!”

The 95th annual Academy Awards aired live Sunday night from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Jimmy Kimmel returned as host for the third time. He first took the helm in 2017 – the infamous year of “envelopegate” where La La Land was announced as the winner instead of Moonlight. However, this awards show went much smoother and without any major incidents.
Everything Everywhere All At Once was the big winner of the night, earning a total of seven Oscars, including Best Picture. The film’s seven wins make it the most won by a Best Picture winner since Slumdog Millionaire, which took home eight awards in 2008.
Among Everything Everywhere‘s wins include Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress. She made history as the first Asian woman to win Best Actress.

Rihanna just reminded fans, once again, that she absolutely commands the stage. The 35-year-old singer performed her Oscar-nominated single "Lift Me Up" from the "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" soundtrack during the March 12 ceremony. Sparkling in a black and crystal top with trousers and long latex gloves, the performer slowly rose up - as the song suggests - on a platform in the center of the Dolby Theatre stage, backed by gospel singers and a live orchestra.
As the pregnant singer concluded the song, the cameras cut to her partner, A$AP Rocky, in the audience, who raised his Champagne glass in a toast.
Rihanna was up for best original song against Sofia Carson ("Applause" from "Tell It Like a Woman"), Lady Gaga ("Hold My Hand" from "Top Gun: Maverick"), Ryan Lott, David Byrne, and Mitski ("This Is a Life" from "Everything Everywhere All at Once"), and Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava...

Lady Gaga won over the audience at the 2023 Oscars with a stripped-down version of her Academy Award-nominated song “Hold My Hand.”
The Film Academy originally said Gaga wasn’t going to perform at the 2023 Oscars, but she showed up Sunday in strong form, sitting and holding her microphone closely while singing the track from Top Gun: Maverick.
The end of the performance showed a photo of late director Tony Scott alongside Tom Cruise, with the words: “In memory of Tony Scott.”
Gaga, in no makeup and wearing a black T-shirt and ripped jeans, called “Hold My Hand” a “deeply personal” song. She co-wrote it with longtime collaborator BloodPop.
“We need a lot of love to walk through this life,” she said onstage ahead of the performance. “You might find that you can be your own hero, even if you feel broken inside.”

Lady Gaga is in the house - and she brought it down with an emotional performance of her best-original-song-nominated track, "Hold My Hand," at the 2023 Oscars on Sunday night. It was originally reported that the singer, who's currently filming her next movie, wouldn't be present at the Dolby Theatre as a performer, however, it seems she tore herself away from the set long enough to pull together a last-minute performance for fans.
Gaga opened up her performance by introducing her song as the one she wrote for best picture nominee "Top Gun: Maverick"; she previously won best original song for "Shallow" from her 2018 film, "A Star Is Born." The singer, who sported a faded black T-shirt and ripped jeans on stage, also shared a heartfelt spiel about "Hold My Hand"'s message, saying, "It's deeply personal for me, and I think that we all need each other." She added: "We...
