OK Jaanu lacks the flow, passion and magic of its original version O Kathal Kanmani.
binducherungath14 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
OK Jaanu, a romantic film directed by Shaad Ali, is the remake of Mani Ratnam's Tamil film O Kathal Kanmani. The screenplay and story is by legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The original version was a box office hit. Mani Ratnam had returned to romance genre after almost a decade with OK Kanmani. He drew a parallel in his movie through his protagonists – an old couple and modern-age couple. Two different perceptions were shown in the movie, without an effort to get preachy or judgmental. At one side, age-old concept of marriage and romance is shown – commitment for the whole life. On the other hand, contemporary romance and live-in relationship was shown, where the couple felt very much in love but did lack the confidence / trust to commit to each other. Mani Ratnam did not try to convey that one is superior to the other, but he very subtly conveyed that one has to be certain about his or her relationship, commitment definitely strengthens the relationship. O Kadhal Kanmani was a very light-hearted movie. It made one feel like falling in love. As far as remakes are concerned, it is bound to draw comparison to the original version in every aspect. Those who have seen the original may feel that the Hindi version is not at par with the same, but for those who have not seen the original, may find OK Jaanu enjoyable. When a remake is made, the filmmaker does face challenges – either it has to be at par with the original or at least a bit superior to the original. And, that is where, OK Jaanu falters. It has nothing new to offer, it is exactly similar to the original, which is still OK, but it fails to have the depth as that of the original.

Aditya/ Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) lands at Mumbai Railway Station and that is where his first eye contact with Tara (Sharddha Kapur) happens who was standing on a different platform and appears to be troubled. Adi is a video game developer, who is in the process of making a breakthrough game. Coincidence brings Adi and Tara together in front of each other and both of them get amazed to explore that they are almost similar to each other, both of them happy-go-lucky people, both not believing in marriage, both not wanting to commit in relationship etc. Their friendship blossom, but a spark of a special relationship is silently handled and definitely felt right from the very beginning. Both of them are focused as far as their career is concerned, Tara wants to go to Paris to pursue her architect course whereas Adi dreams to be a rich man like Mark Zuckerberg and settle in USA. As is the trend in the films offlate, both want to just enjoy the togetherness, love, laughter minus any commitments, possessiveness, drama. Both have similar opinion about marriage that they don't want to fall in the trap of marriage. They decide to enter into live-in relationship before heading to pursue their careers abroad separately. They chose to stay with a old couple Gopi and Charu played by Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson (Leela played the same role in Tamil too). They happen to witness this couple enjoying 50 years of togetherness in marriage. What happens next is very much predictable.

Aditya-Shraddha are likable, look good together, but that is not sufficient. They are unable to regenerate the chemistry of Dulquer- Nithya. The movie picks up when Naseeruddin Shah – Leela Samson come on screen, they do add depth to the film. As the lead pair wanted no drama in their relationship, the film also lacks drama, twists and turns.

Music by AR Rahman is disappointing. Songs are not synchronized with the script appropriately. Even the energy of Humma Humma song is missing. Dialogues are very much ordinary.

OK Jaanu lacks the flow, passion and magic of its original version O Kathal Kanmani but certainly has to offer one-time watch simple story for those who haven't watched the original. Contradictory to one of the punchline used in its posters – 'Love can surprise you', it does not surprise you. A one-time watch.

You can skip watching it in theatre.

Mani Ratnam's 'Ok Kanmani', Tamil film that garnered enough love from the south Indian audience. Now is this reason enough to make a Hindi remake? Well as per Bollywood history, yes it is. OK Jaanu is the story of a young couple Adi and Tara who hit it off instantly and decide to live in together rather than tying the marital knot and carry on to pursue their dreams. A parallel track shows the relationship between their land lord and his wife who has Alzheimer's and the older couple makes Adi and Tara realize that they ought to do the right thing.Technically speaking there are not many faults in the film. But it's nothing that we haven't seen before. It's the same old wine served the same old way in the same old bottle. It's predictable and once again the climax doesn't make much sense. It looks more of a made up drama that a real sweet coming of age romance story of a young couple. I go with 2.5/5 for OK Jaanu.

OK Jaanu is a terrible remake of OK Kanmani and Rahman's music is the only pro of this movie.
shobanchittuprolu26 February 2017
OK Jaanu (2017): O Kaadhal Kanmani is one of the best romantic films in recent times and it mainly worked because of its terrific casting and brilliant music and sensible direction by Maniratnam.OK Kanmani did wonders with a simple plot so remake of such film needs a perfect output to become a success.A proper casting will be enough for remaking OK Kanmani and Shaad Ali selected Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shradhdha Kapoor in OK Kaanu.Did their chemistry looked as lovely as Dulquer and Nitya Menon?

Plot: A love story between Adi (Aditya Roy) and Tara (Shradhdha) in Mumbai who have different goals which may disturb their no worries live in relationship.

Plus Points: 1)Music: AR Rahman's soulful music of OK Kanmani is reused here and there is no doubt that even after 50 years this songs will get same response.

2)Cinematography: OK Jaanu used the exact same camera angles of OK Kanmani and the beautiful Mumbai looked lovely.

Minus Points: 1)Casting: As I had said earlier,OK Jaanu would only work with perfect casting but here it failed terribly.I know that both Aditya Roy and Shradhdha Kapoor are good actors but here they tried to imitate the performances of Dulquer and Nitya respectively and its is the major blow to the movie's feel. There lacked any mesmerizing chemistry between them and this is the sole reason for the disappointment of OK Jaanu.

2)Direction: I hope Shaad Ali should never remake any other Maniratnam's movies again.

So,OK Jaanu is a terrible remake of OK Kanmani and Rahman's music is the only pro of this movie.

My rating 4/10

The epidemic of passable movies continue
Pramitheus14 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The trend of making remakes is very hot right now in Hollywood. Some of them are good, some of them are average and many fail but if you look closely you'll see one common thing. All the movies are remakes of very old movies. Now if you apply common sense, you'll ask that why do film-makers remake old movies, right? Because they think they can improve upon the originals because of the technical advancements we have achieved throughout the years. Now see what the Hindi Film Industry does. They remake a movie which was made one year ago. I'll try to elaborate this throughout the review.

SCREENPLAY/STORY - OK Jaanu is a remake of the Tamil movie O Kadhal Kanmani(2015). I had seen the movie then because there was a major uproar about it because it was Mani Ratnam's movie. The story follows Adi and Tara who fall in love, live together in an elderly couple's house. The elderly couple is portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson. On observing their unconditional love, Adi and Tara understand the gravity of their relation and eventually give in to their love- wala feelings. That's it. It was an average story then and 2 years later it is still an average story, but this is bogged down by the extremely bland dialogue and exposition. It almost felt like in the screenplay where there should have been one full-stop, there there were two full-stops. Due to that the conversations were missing a beat every-time. It seemed very artificial. I maybe nitpicking but this keeps happening throughout the entire length of the movie. Now as Naseeruddin Shah is a veteran actor, he makes the dialogue sound real but it sticks out like a sore thumb every time there is a conversational scene between Aditya and Shraddha.

DIRECTION - Shaad Ali made Saathiya(2002) and Bunty aur Babli(2005) and after that took a complete nose-dive with flops like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom(2007) and Kill Dil(2014). No need to be surprised why that happened. Where Saathiya(2002) was penned by Mani Ratnam, Bunty aur Babli(2005) was penned by Aditya Chopra and Jaideep Sahni. I have been watching educational videos regarding film-making and it is difficult. I am being honest here, it is very difficult but when you are remaking something, you can clearly see where the problems were, right? Why repeat them scene by scene? The camera-work is bland and sometimes just off. Just off. Even the scenes with false tension are predictable. It should be unpredictable to the characters as well as the audience or else what is the point. Then comes the songs and the background score. It is everywhere like the Illuminati. Not a single shot has silence. Silence allows the characters, the set-up to settle in the eyes of the audience. The characters are jumping from one song to another, one frame to another so obviously the characters feel plastic and I couldn't even connect. People were leaving the hall before half-time and it is a movie with young, beautiful people who are in love. Bravo!

ACTING - Probably the worst performance yet by the leads and they have been in Aashiqui 2. So that's saying something. I am sure they are good actors but they were absolutely emotionless here. There was no chemistry, at all. On top of that there was the background score which was screaming, "FEEL THIS! FEEL THAT!". Arre! let the actors emote, please. Naseeruddin was great as usual. The actress who played Adi's sister-in-law had one scene and she nailed it. Leela Samson was bland too but I couldn't figure it whether it was because she was playing the character with Alzheimer's disease or not.

FINAL VERDICT - The only redeemable factor is how beautiful Shraddha Kapoor was looking in this movie. Go on judge me, see if I care. As far as the movie goes, wait for it to come on DVD or TV. If you want to sleep then you can probably go. You'll have a good sleep because of the 2 hour run-time. You can suffer a minor cardiac arrest due to the horrendous rendition of "Humma Humma", other than that it is a complete snooze fest. I am sure nobody from the Hindi Film Industry will be reading this but please, if you're spending so much then make a good movie because if you've nothing new to say then why say anything at all.

If you missed this movie, you haven't missed anything!!

Warning: Spoilers
OK, I rarely write movie reviews so often, but felt for this movie I had to. There is absolutely nothing to write about this movie except the good songs. The chemistry between the lead actors was pale. Dialogues were damn cheesy, the lead pair are talking for the first time on phone without even properly introduced and the are talking about kids, marriage n stuff. Like who does that without knowing each other. Except Nasrudeen Shah everyone seemed like Siri is saying its dialogues in Hindi.

Totally crap movie. Should have gone for Dangal again (saw it once). I feel movies made without passion end up like this. Feel Shradha Kapoor and Aditya Kapoor looked so immature throughout the movie and their conversations were so fake. Enough said, go at your own risk.

A Fair Totally Avoidable...
ravisinger8614 January 2017
OK Jaanu Directed By Shaad Ali Saathiya Movie Fame is A Romantic Drama. It is Official Remake Of Tamil "O Kadhal Kanmani" By Mani Ratnam. Script is Neither Good Nor Bad. Screenplay is Repetitive & Predictable. Direction By Shaad Adds Nothing New To Screenplay Depicted in Tamil Version. Dialogues Are Just Fine.

Aditya(Aditya Roy Kapoor) is A Video Game Developer Who Accidentally Meets Taara(Shradhha Kapoor) At Railway Station. They Again Meet At His Friends Wedding. They Soon Begin To Call Each Other, Go Out Together, And Start To Fall in Love. They Agree That Marriage is Not For Them And Decide To Have A Live-in Relationship Instead, And Taara Moves into Adi's Place, Rented From Gopi Shrivastav(Naseerudin Shah). They Wish To Spend Their Time With Each Other Before They Go Their Separate Ways For Their Respective Careers. Meanwhile They Sort Out, Why They Need Each Other And What is Importance Of Being Together Which Tends To Change Their Mindset.

Acting Wise, Aditya Roy Kapoor Has A Long Way To Go To Prove Himself As An Actor. He is Just Fine in Few Scenes. Same With Shraddha Kapoor She is Scrictly Average. The Pair Looks Good But There is Lack Of Chemistry. Naseerudin Shah is Not Utilized Effectively But Leela Samson is Better in Her Complex Character As An Alzheimer Patient. Rest Of The Cast is Forgettable.

Music By A.R Rehman is Very Average. "Ok Jaanu" By A.R Rehman & Shrinidhi Venkatesh is A Better Composition Of The Lot.

Overall Movie Has Nothing New To Offer. It Has Same Plot Like Befikre, A Fair Totally Avoidable.

A beautiful Hindi Chick-Flick
urvashiilal15 January 2017
OK Jaanu is a fairly romantic drama, with beautiful tracks along with a creative and innovative fresh take on present day modern relationships! Since this is an official remake of O Kandhal Kanmani, I have not watched the Tamil movie so I cannot compare, but this definitely is worth a watch if you are into themes that are relationship- based with a combination of flirty romance, madness, cohabitation, love, loneliness, marriage and ambition. Adi (Aditya Roy Kapoor) who is a game developer and Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) who is an architect- a lovely young couple that does not believe in marriage but want to be together at that point without worrying what's going to happen next. Twists arrive when they face difficulties between choosing love and career and how they balance it out. Aditya's smile and charming looks along with beautiful Shraddha is always a lovely on screen pair to look forward to after Aashiqui 2. Also, the supporting cast comes up with impeccable performances. Kudos to Naseeruddin Shah and Leela. The music is very well accomplished. Full marks on the recreated Humma version!

As cringy as the title.
riddhimaakaritu18 August 2020
It was stupid of me to expect a decent love story when the title itself is so cringy. Two grown adults speaking and behaving like teenagers with raging hormones. And having Naseeruddin in same film only contrasted the lead couples' shallow performance. I liked only last 15 minutes of film.

It's hard to believe it's the same lead pair of Aashiqui 2 - what a movie or maybe it was it's music album which have bestest songs ever 'cause I have watched the film only once but have watched/listened it's (Aashiqui 2) songs soooo mannyyyy times. Will have to listen to Chahun Main Ya Naa, Tum Hi Ho, Sun Raha Hai Naa...well complete album to get over the stupidity of Ok Jaanu.

poignant love story
aminifatimaaa15 February 2019
Aditya Roy Kapur is the greatest romantic lead in Bollywood cinema, he is truly perfect here. Aditya and Shraddha make the material genuinely investing and emotional, and form such complete portraits of these individuals. I genuinely cared about their relationship and truly desired for a happy ending. Yes love transcends everything.

Sweet, diluted version of OK Kanmani but sweet nonetheless
BollywoodisBae27 February 2021
Aditya Roy Kapur is just so much eye candy that sometimes it gets too much for my blushing chubby cheeks. And I think Shradhha Kapoor has never looked this stunning in any film. Watching this film makes you realise that Mani Ratnam is a genius. Because there is nothing new to say in OK Jaanu, as there was nothing new to say in Ok Kanmani. It's just Saathiya for the newer generation, but while Kanmani had Dulquer, Nithya and the magic of Mani Ratnam himself, OK Jaanu clearly shows the cracks in the old tired story Shaad Ali is trying to retell like he did with Saathiya. Overall a fun timepass watch, but if you don't mind subtitles, I'd recommend OK Kanmani. Yes it doesn't have the shirtless hotness of Aditya Roy Kapur, but the film has a lot more , while being absolutely the same.

Not OK Jaanu
kautukmalviya14 January 2017
'Ok Jaanu' is a classic example of meaningless cinema. The movie struggles to pick up and keeps giving the audience a chance to say "kya bakwass movie hai, paise barbaad ho gaye" during the course of the movie itself. The story lacks sense, what else can u say when hero and heroine meet for the first time across the railway platform (just see each other) and then in their 2nd meeting without talking to each other simply exchange their numbers. I mean come on in todays world who does that. Then director struggles to bring any masala to their romantic journey and it keeps touching new lows. Finally u reach a stage where u start looking at ur watch and pray please let the movie get over.

The only twist or suspense in the movie was that how will the hero and heroine get out of the situation where they have to decide between career and love. And when you will get to know the decision you will further curse yourself for deciding on coming for the movie. But thankfully by then it will time for you to leave the theatre.

So watch this movie only if you have nothing better to do over the weekend, cos over weekdays I am sure you would have better things to do.

One last comment, I can't understand why Shraddha Kapoor is wasting her talent in such useless projects. Hope she doesn't become lady Shakti Kapoor who was seen in almost every useless movie that use to hit theatre at one point in time.

Looks Like High-School Romance. ♦ Grade D-
nairtejas21 January 2017
Not much afterthought was given to the idea of remaking a romance film which was not a critical success in the first place. But then, one cannot expect originality from a director who has been consuming the shadow of other people all his life.

Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) is a young, dreamy architecture student-cum- researcher who is in love with Aditya (Aditya Kapoor), a video game developer trying to be a billionaire. They hit it off within days of meeting, and form a pact early in their relationship: no commitment whatsoever. So, they fool around as long as they can in a partial attempt to show the world that they do not care about societal stigmas, stereotypes, electrotypes, and all that comes with live-in relationships. The story is basically their romantic journey as they fight the varied thoughts and fears that surround such a relationship, and how they can take it forward without compromising their other commitments like work and lifestyle.

Sort of a crooked primer for modern marriage, Ratnam's story was clichéd then (O Kaadhal Kanamani (2015)) and is clichéd now. Just add some ounces of overacting, and you have the Hindi version, considering actress Leela Samson did not have to put in a single extra effort in reprising her role. OK Jaanu is a film about over-the-top youngsters who use black-and-yellow taxis (just so you get that vintage effect) in the time of Uber and Ola, consider life to be a snakes and ladders game, behave like high school sweethearts in the middle of the road, exaggerate like that figure of speech (hyperbole) that they learned last week in the English lecture, and DO NOT look like they are working people. It is, thus, a travesty when you see Aditya and Tara interact with each other romantically and try to showcase the youngsters of today. Just like Aditya Chopra got it terribly wrong in his blundering horseplay (Befikre (2016)), director Shaad Ali gets it wrong this time, too, three years after creating another load of garbage, Kill Dil (2014). Just look at the title of both the films: so 20th century.

While there is this wee bit of diligence and maturity in Shraddha's performance AND her character, it is Aditya who overacts to the tooth. Just like someone asked here in the IMDb message boards, "Whatever happened to the guy?!" He was a good actor few years ago, even in the rehashed version of Aashiqui (1990), but in here, he just tries to be this chocolate boy who smells of burnt cocoa. Naseeruddin Shah is the only respite for people like me, who also seems to be the only sane character in the whole film, literally even.

However, there is a hint of delight in the screenplay and there is a average chance that you may get bored with the happenings. You will get annoyed, sure, but director Ali makes the broth a little spicy to save you from the boredom. Although, should you choose to watch the film and if you really think of walking out the hall after sitting through twenty minutes, I would suggest you wait for the scene (unfortunatey in the second half) where Tara takes a selfie of her and Aditya and terms it as "our first quarrel selfie". Visualise that in Hindi, and then you can walk out, because now you have company.

BOTTOM LINE: Shaad Ali's "Ok Jaanu" is a childish attempt at showcasing romantic relationships of today's youth. The biggest problem is that most things here are just imagination, a factor that should have been limited when you are talking about reality. Watch it for Shraddha's expressions when it airs on TV, but do switch channels between commercials.

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? NO

Seriously, who's OKAY with OK Jaanu?
TheGreatCritic16 September 2020
Seriously, who's OKAY with OK Jaanu? Bollywood tries to recreate Mani Ratnam's OK Kanmani and this is the outcome.. O Kadhal Kanmani wasn't remarkable (plot)but it had terrific performances ( casting done right) and a beautiful soundtrack. Compared to DQ and Nitya, Aditya and Shraddha are easily forgettable. ''The only valid reason to watch it would be to groove to AR Rahman's music. But trust me, even that sounds better in Tamil.''

A very good film could have been made out of the story of the film.
aishushobha15 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This Review Might Contain Spoilers

This review is my perspective of the film OK Jaanu (2017)

positives: 1) the message of film is beautiful and relevant for most of the youth of today who are confused about true love, it might help them to be guided in their individual journey of love. a) love is pure it cannot be played with b) multiple relationships give you peace which is transient not permanent c) Sex,casual dating etc... are definitely not what LOVE actually is d)Love is a bliss,Love is caring for each other, staying strong with each other through all thick and thins

e)Marriage is a Marriage, Marriage has its own charm and sweetness,it is near impossible for any other thing to replace this beautiful institution f) you don't need yourself to go through multiple relationships and break ups to ultimately settle down with the one you feel is correct for you. g)just wait for the right time, the supreme power will definitely gift you your right soulmate, the ONLY ONE for you. h) while choosing between your career and LOVE,you don't need to sacrifice either one of them , you can keep both by finding the right way. i)the love story of Charulata Aunty and Gopi Uncle is the ideal form of love, which can be made a thing to be followed by the ones who are seeking the right way to love the other person. j)At last the Charulata- Gopi love story wins over Adi-Tara's non- committal love story k) Adi and Tara realise that true love is found in stability, in friendship and care

2) The Enna Sona Song is the attractive factor of this film, at least for me as rest of the songs are same as OK Kanmani. The OK Jaanu title song is a dampener for me as I have already heard a very excellent version of it in Tamil and Telugu. I used to hate the original Humma Humma since childhood but after listening to its new version ( recreated by Badshah and Tanishk Bagchi) in the film I have started loving the original Humma Humma, I don't know how this crap recreation became such a big hit on YouTube, Jee Lein Zara is very good in Hindi due to its lyrics. All these songs are very good to be heard in the theatre and go according to the situations present the film. BACKGROUND SCORE: its mellifluous

3) Cinematography is very good, even the sets and production values of this film are very good and better than the original film.

4) Shraddha Kapoor looks very beautiful in the film, her costumes in the film are so good that I eagerly want them to be in the nearby stores for sale, Shraddha has surprisingly acted very well here, except some scenes she has acted very well in most of the scenes, Aditya looks good and has played his role how it should be. Its true that Shraddha and Aditya May fall short of the innate spark the pair of Dulquer And Nithya in the original Tamil film, but they are very good in themselves.

5) the locations of Ahemadabad are good. 6) This film has good scenes, It is a very sweet and heart touching love story compared to other romantic comedy films being made in Bollywood recently.

Since the film is same to same remake of OK Kanmani, the negatives of the film are same as OK Kanmani

Negatives:

1) The film has a kind of screenplay which bores you from the word GO, From the opening credits to the end credits, the film is uninteresting. The screenplay does not involve you in the film, you do not travel emotionally with the journey of the lead characters in the film.Yes "something is happening on screen ", this is the feeling I got while watching the film.

2) a scene in the film is not realistic, the scene where Adi-Tara talking a bit loudly on phones in the church where someone's marriage is going on,in reality you don't need to talk on the phones, either of the one can go and sit next to the other one if they really want to talk , in this way the silence of that place might not get disturbed.

3) the lead characters are in merry making mood half of the time and laugh too much which is irritating and rest of the time they are so serious which is also irritating. jovial and serious moods of the leads should have been shown in such a balanced way that we would have understood their emotions.

4) the film doesn't explore any other areas except the chemistry of the new age couple in the film, the story of Adi's family (dropping in and they mistake Tara to be Gopi's niece) is half-baked 7) they could have made a good family entertainer with the concept of living-in,it serves as neither a pure-realistic film nor a entertaining romantic comedy. This film could have been more better.

Making You Feel Good , Without breaking any New Grounds
anupapu813 January 2017
OK JAANU - So , its an official remake of O Kadhal Kanmani , which one was written and directed by Great Mani Ratnam. But this one is directed by Shaad Ali (screenplay was by Mani Ratnam this time too) who is a pretty good director (director of SAATHIYA) but nowhere close to Mani Ratnam . I haven't seen O Kadhal Kanmani so cant compare. But it was a box office success and critically acclaimed film with hit songs. As for now critical acclaim is not the thing which OK JAANU will get. Box Office success will only be known in future. Songs are not huge hit (although both movies are composed by A R Rehman) , i personally like the title track but The Humma Song and Enna Sona were both average and rest of the songs are pretty non commercial , will only be liked by those persons who like that particular genre of song. But the visual depiction of all three main songs are very good with each song given its different treatment. And the other songs too well mixed within the movie without hampering the pace. And the pace is the thing which makes this movie entertaining without anything exceptional in writing. It never slows down. And filled with Ashiqui 2 moments here and there to keep up the interest. About the chemistry , we all have seen how great they both act beside themselves in Ashiqui 2 . Same goes here. Aditya and Shradhaa are perfect complimentary actors to each other. And they both makes the romance seems natural. I don't know is it me or Shradha Kapoor is becoming more and more cute with every next film. She was the perfect gf in this movie whom every boy wants. The sidetrack love story of Nassiruddin shah and his wife was very important to the main storyline . Through those two mature lovers struggling in their old age , Adi and Tara (our main leads) try to learn the importance of marriage and being together. The problem with the movie was , its too predictable. You know whats gonna happen in every single time period. And the Dilemma of choosing between Love and Carrier was not explored enough. But as i said , the pace of the movie was good , never give you a chance to get bore. Those who are bored of watching this kind of movies (BEFIKRE is recent months) could get annoyed by the same type of storyline , but for those who still cant get enough of free spirited love stories , will get enjoyed with this feel good movie where nothing much bad happens. And yes , the way in which this movie has been shot , it surely shows that the Cinematographer is in love with MUMBAI CITY. Still there is a thought inside me thinking this could have been better if Mani Ratnam had directed it by himself. 7.1/10 ANuP APu KuMaR

Mani Ratnam's magical story gone to the dumps
oazam13 January 2017
Something I don't understand which is shitting out unusual remakes for no reason. I think that the South Indian version was good enough although I haven't seen it because I can't speak or understand Tamil. Honestly the trailer was underwhelming based on the chemistry thinking it was too far beyond a point and made me realize that live in romance can just make a film too far fest and uneven like Befikre.

So we have a boy who wants to pursue gaming spots a girl who has intentions of studying architecture in Paris who threatens to commit suicide in front of a guy and then later they meet at a wedding and both fall in love but use their relationship in a way that their passions don't get compromised with love being the reason.

The acting is okay in parts. Aditya and Shraddha have given similar performances before like in Aashiqui 2 and they're roles just didn't match my expectations although their acting is reviving which is good. Nasseruddin Shah's role as a lawyer acted fine but in most movies he acts like a patient who was just recovering from a stroke.

The music is average and no song really stands out as such. Umma song just got pretty annoying after attempting a loop listening technique. A.R Rahman is lacking magic especially after applying magic in Jai ho and won an Oscar for it.

Mani Ratnam has failed like this before. I can reminisce Raavan- a movie I couldn't sit through. But he has potential of making better films but remakes don't count just like this one. I liked Guru and Dil Se which were directed by him. Shaad Ali's direction has always been too sloppy like Kill Dil and Bunty our Babli and he shot this movie in a very south Indian style which explains Ravi K Chandran being the DOP for this movie.

Overall, this movie lacked magic with poor direction, average music, and poor writing. Definitely OK Jaanu should be a T.V watching movie and save money for Raees.

Great performances and sweet fun overcome rehashed/predictable plot and narrative flaws....almost!!
timhussain19 January 2017
The film starts off in a great way. But soon gets lost in the same old rut. A boy sees a girl and starts pursuing her like a pervert and the girl falls for him too right off the bat. As usual, romance follows between them. They start living in a relationship. Then family drama & other shits start adding into the mix which we've seen countless times in several movies, one way or another. Like I said earlier, everyone gave great performances, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah in particular. Shraddha has stepped up her acting too but her voice still sounds cringy. She needs to focus more on the voice variation. Overall I enjoyed the movie for its sweetness alone but there were many flaws that stuck out in addition to its familiar and rehashed plot.

OK Jaanu
ahwaan_padhee19 January 2017
Directed by : Shaad Ali Star cast : Aditya Roy Kapur,Shraddha Kapoor, Naseerudding Shah, Leela Samson Music : AR Rahman

While we are recovering from the torment that Aditya Chopra inflicted on us with his take on modern-day live-in relationships Befikre that released almost a month back, Shaad Ali's OK Jaanu, a scene-by-scene rehash of Maniratnam's Tamil superhit - O Kadhal Kanmani, has ensured that we stick to the inertia. The millennial romance which stars the love-struck couple, Adi(Aditya Roy Kapur) a Techie who devises computer games and is headed for Silicon Valley and Tara( Shraddha Kapoor)who wants to pursue Architecture as a career in Paris, doesn't offer anything new but brings back memories of Saathiya, Shaad's first foray into Bollywood as director.

Adi and Tara meet at a friend's wedding and sparks fly instantly. They start dating each other and eventually live-in.Both are sure about their relationship clause - they don't to string in any form of commitment into it.Both have different ambitions and want to pursue their dreams independently. Until love gets in the way .Shaad offers us with a been there-seen that premise, without any interesting moments spicing up the plot. Rather it's interesting to see the elderly couple who are Adi's landlord, played by the versatile Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson.Unlike Adi and Tara, their love has endured misfortune and defied time. This couple makes the younger ones realize the deeper meaning of love.

Both Kapur and Kapoor are sincere in their respective parts and they share an effortlessly easy chemistry with each other, but they are not magnetic enough to distract us from the film's flaws - its juvenile writing and the hollow plot. Bereft of emotional depth, rarely does it try to induce a sense of urgency. In fact, AR Rahman's infectious soundtracks (employed from the original) is a major mercy, which glosses over the film's flat narrative.

A word of praise for DOP, Ravi K Chandran who immaculately captures the essence of the Mumbai city - its crowd, the buses , the locals. Its vibrant and colorful.I was awestruck with the nuances of the Begum Akhtar paintings and the vignettes of the monuments (in Ahmedabad) brought on the celluloid, and also the artistically- curated rooms .And mind you, there is too much of it which jars your head..like the frequent montages of Adi and Tara pubbing at night clubs and driving endlessly on the Mumbai streets.

On the whole, OK Jaanu is a strictly OK, feel-good movie which hardly shows much potential. Its like a soufflé that will sink like a stone at the box office.

Unexpectedly good
jetkot14 August 2017
I did not have high hopes from this movie. The reviews I read everywhere were bad. When I watched the movie , I thoroughly enjoyed it. The problem is that the Indian audience has still a very long way to go before they start accepting live- in relationships or strings free romances. They feel that their culture is under threat by such films and hence a huge section of narrow minded audience does not let such films work. Aditya Roy Kapur is a decent actor. Shraddha Kapoor always reminds me of Padmini Kolhapuri. She is also a decent actress. Nasseruddin shah plays his role with honesty.

I am not sure why people hated this film. It was a great commercial entertainer. A breezy youthful romance.

Charming and endearing romance comedy
Moviebuffdxb30 August 2017
Don't listen to all these negative reviewers below. The movie is a charming love story and the lead roles share a good chemistry. I'm not sure what these other reviewers were expecting? It's a light-hearted comedy and well worth a watch on DVD on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The performances were decent and lot of endearing scenes and some great soundtracks.

Boring!
cearadsouza23 November 2021
Honestly it wasn't worth my time. Just a easy of money and time. I couldn't even complete the whole movie. Not even a one time watch. Although Aditya and Shraddha have a good chemistry but this movie is totally crap.

Extremely overrated. Was expecting something like mystery thriller but it was terrible.
