Decent attempt at the genre

Warning: Spoilers
Not a great film by any means, but also not a terrible one at that. It follows your typical "anthology" formula where we see the stories of multiple people. The 2nd one with the "hole in the head" could had been a feature film it was that good. Instead of allowing that story to really unfold we get a "killer mouse" skit that was terribly produced. Not kidding. The only saving grace for this movie was "Hellyfish" which was an over the top Sharknado type short that was surprisingly entertaining to say the least. Watching CGI attack Jellyfish wreck havoc on a bunch of beachgoers was a hoot. I do recommend watching this if your are a fan of Horror, b movies, or a completist.

Its not too bad. 4 stars.

Take a Detour

Warning: Spoilers
"Monsterland" is another horror anthology about ghoulies, ghosties, and long-legged beasties, and things that go bump in the night. Too bad it isn't better than what it advertises.

There are a couple of tales that work; the majority do not. That is not to say, however, that the people involved with this film did not try different things. I applaud that--I didn't care for most of what they did, but at least it wasn't about another camping trip of death. My two favorite segments were "Grey Matter" and "Hag." In "Grey Matter" you had a talking parasite that lives on brains, and "Hag" was, well, kinda' creepy. Other than those two, I thought the movie fell on its face.

Rated "R" for violence and brief nudity, "Monsterland" is not a destination you should waste your time on. Besides, it will probably be billed as a "Chiller" feature debut anytime now.

I couldn't finish it.

I think the title says it all. This was the worst piece of garbage I've ever seen in my life, and I see a lot of bad movies as a film critic. I cannot see what everyone likes about this. The acting was terrible, the stories were terrible, and if I could give it a rating lower than 1, I would. If you can watch this and have a good time than CONGRATIONS, but for me, I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to see this.

wow...no words

I gave it 2 stars only because there were a few funny (in a ridiculous, campy, wtf way) moments. But all in all, just wow. Terrible acting. Terrible scenery. Terrible effects. And you seriously need to be high on some mind altering substance to be able to even grasp half of what is going on at any given time.

A total blast with tales all over the place. If you don't like Horror with humor in it stay away from this movie.

Monster Fun.

This movie was a thoroughly enjoyable roller coaster ride for a monster fan such as myself. I haven't enjoyed a film this much since I was a child growing up on classic monster films. I feel it to be a film worthy of recognition in the horror/monster anthology genre.

Now I will say that a lot of what lies within this film may not be for everyone, especially the squeamish. The violence is graphic & even the overall plot of some of the stories may be considered disturbing to some. In my opinion these attributes were part of the charm, but proceed with caution especially with kids around.

Yet if you enjoy a good monster flick, whether horrific & terrifying, or campy & silly, then this film should do justice for you, as there is no shortage of surprises in this film. I loved it enough not mind returning to Monsterland (cough-sequel?!)

I got crabs

Warning: Spoilers
This is a series of campy shorts. During a monster attack, a man sits in a movie theater and makes me crave popcorn. He watches on the screen a number of short features, campy with a twist. There was a puppet sequence at about an hour into the film I could have done without. In 1958 Iran was a US ally, and not a Russian ally...just saying. The animated monster hunter was similar to a man in "The City of Rott" which used the same type of animation. If you like camp and Creepshow, give it a view, I am sure one bit will make you smile. Shorts include a parasite in a man's head, mutant Jellyfish, a man with nursing breasts, vampire at dentist, kids skinny dipping, radioactive rat, and a hag.

Guide: F-word, sex, nudity (Allison McCall, Anna Gravel)

Hugely enjoyable beast bash

Warning: Spoilers
A man takes shelter from a monster outbreak in a movie theater where he watches a handful of short creature features.

"Don't Go Into the Lake" - Pretty slight, but mercifully brief, plus it has a few nice bare breasts and some cool gore.

"The Grey Matter" - Cute and funny tale of a nerdy guy who takes pointers on how to pick up gals from a brain-eating parasite.

"Curiosity Kills" - Uproariously zany hoot with a radioactive rodent running amuck.

"Hag" - Excellent creepy atmosphere and a spot-on grotesque turn by Eileen Dietz as a hideous old crone.

"Monster Man" - Funky animated riot. The old monster-killing dude with a walker is a gut-busting joy to behold in action.

"House Call" - Black comedy gem in which a man who's slowly turning into a vampire forces a dentist at gunpoint to remove his fangs. Lots of tension and a satisfying serving of nasty violence, too.

"Happy Memories" - Gloriously trippy marvel with puppets and a plethora of mind-melting psychedelic visuals.

"Stay at Home Dad" - Man, this one was deliciously messed-up and sidesplitting in equal measure.

"Hellyfish" - Delightfully bonkers corker with lethal mutant jellyfish wreaking plentiful gory havoc.
