Drab Internet-based horror
Leofwine_draca9 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
SELFIE FROM HELL is another awful independent horror outing dealing with the Internet. The story is mainly told via a single actress interacting with screens and various social media applications as she attempts to solve a mystery involving her sick cousin. The film's attempts to flirt with the notorious "dark web" are the only interesting part of an otherwise hackneyed and time-wasting tale. It's cheap, drab, and oh-so-digital, with grey filters that suck every bit of life from the story. The "horror" is limited to loud noises and scary faces, basic stuff that doesn't raise the heartbeat at all. Round it out with zero characterisation and bad acting and you have a real waste of time.

Hellish messaging
TheLittleSongbird16 June 2018
Was drawn into seeing 'Selfie from Hell' with a cool poster/cover, a very intriguing if not creative premise and as someone with a general appreciation for horror. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there, made me though apprehensive.

'Selfie from Hell' is a film it doesn't do enough with its potential (although there are far bigger wastes of potential in film) and could have been much better, can't say that it is a great film because it isn't. It is not a terrible film though, as far as recent low-budget film viewings go it's one of the lacklustre but watchable ones easily. It certainly could have been far worse, considering the large number of films seen recently being mediocre at best and terrible at worst.

Although 'Selfie from Hell' is far from great and could have been much better, will agree who consider the rating too low. Have seen far worse films recently that have a higher rating, for example a few irredeemably awful films that get around 4.4.

Lets start with the positives. The setting is atmospheric and spooky and 'Selfie from Hell' is surprisingly well shot and easy on the eye, was expecting a cheap looking film and to me that wasn't the case here.

'Selfie from Hell's' at least doesn't have one want to tear their hair out or annoyed. There are suspenseful and creepy moments and there are parts that capture the horror of this very dangerous subject very well.

Albeit, it could have explored the subject more. It could have been more enlightening and said more of what was not already known. The creepiness is not sustained all the way through, with the horror and tension giving away later to dullness and a lack of creativity and shocks. Things start not making much sense and gets silly. The acting is not amateurish as such but is uninspired.

Further issues are that it was clear that it was written in haste. There is a very rushed and careless feel to the story, especially in the second half where confusion and choppy can be found, and the underdeveloped and scrappy script likewise. The characters are flimsily developed and bland, the direction lacks focus and the music is far too intrusive, sounds cheap and irritating.

In conclusion, lacklustre but not a waste of time. 4/10 Bethany Cox

Had potential to be great but sadly it fails
wycherleyp-960-47065828 February 2018
I like the concept and idea of the film as it is something fresh on a lackluster social media internet crazed genre.

This had the making to be a stand out film if it had backing and with that backing a bigger budget and more in-depth script, selfie from hell suffers from a rushed story. As said before I liked the idea of this film but what we got was not great with sound effects that came from the cutting room floor of insidious to the film only running for just over an hour.

Selfie from hell had the potential to be great but with a tight budget and a rushed story and script it falls flat on its face which I'm disappointed in as was hoping for much better.

Selfie from Hell: A tragic mess
Platypuschow27 January 2019
There have been a spate of short horror films that got made into features by the original creators over the past few years. For example the likes of Lights Out (2016) and the fantastic Martin Freeman zombie film Cargo (2017).

Selfie from Hell is based on the short film from the same people made back in 2015. Sadly however the short was considerably better than this which is a demonstration that some concepts don't suit 90 minute outings.

With the same creators and the shorts star I was shocked how low its rating was going in. At time of writing we're talking 3.1, that's incredibly low and I didn't expect something that bad! Well, I get it I really do the film is quite dire.

It tells the story of a girl who gets caught up in the dark web and a possible supernatural presence when her friend falls sick while visiting.

The whole thing starts interestingly enough but spirals out of control. By the time you're hit with the finale it's truly seven shades of awful, barely makes sense and just doesn't make for an entertaining watch.

This is one of those films I wanted to like, but the concept simply doesn't work.

The Good:

I genuinely can't think of anything

The Bad:

Some elements are beyond stupid

Offensively ridiculous pseudo computer science

Awful ending

Warning: Spoilers
Good concept. The main character was an awful cousin.. leaving her cuz in bed for days knowing she's had no water or even opened her eyes and only saw a doctor once.. walking around her (rather old fashioned) house in the dark when light switches were within reach... happily sleeping after such events and waking up in good moods knowing your cousin may be dying in the next room.

Poor effort 2/10
alicepetit9 September 2018
Ok the acting was good except for the sister character, and cinematography solid enough.

But... oh no, no other redeeming features. Lots of silly jump scares and a real paint by numbers approach to horror. Oh let's go on the dark web, and I'll talk to myself as I'm on google so the audience knows what's going on. It was like copy-paste from lots of better films with no heart or originality. This social media horror genre is one I'll be avoiding, too many turkeys.

Ultimately disappointing, despite some good ideas.
Sleepin_Dragon27 August 2018
I was intrigued by this film, and having watched the short story a few years ago I was intrigued to see how they'd expand on the story. The ideas are great, the idea of punishing those that constantly take selfies is I'm sure a secret pleasure of the writer. This new fascination in films with exploring the dark web continues here, with a bit of a twist. The acting is good, the music is good, despite all those positive elements the film is ultimately flat, the scares are a little on the childish side, the pacing is all over the place, it doesn't really give anything new, but worst of all is the ending, which is simply terrible.

A few nice ideas, but the execution is poor. 4/10

LAUGHABLY BAD!
glittermatch22 February 2018
.Really horrible in every regard, from the terrible score to the painfully bad acting. I dont wish this 'waste of my time" movie on anyone, lest it be someone that has no concept of what a well concieved and thoughtfully made movie is. This was neither.

Too much
iamtherobotman22 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Well, I just watched this and I regret having done so. Premise is quite interesting and that about sums up the positives of this film.

The negatives? Well, pretty much everything else. They took so many Horror tropes and jam packed them into this mess of a film using the same trope countless times.

1 The overly vague responses when a simply clear explanation would be so much easier.

2 The Jump scare( or attempted jump scare) ranging from a face suddenly appearing to a phone suddenly ringing directly afterwards.

3 Walking around in the dark needlessly and particularly when freaky stuff is going on in your house

4 The score - once more the score made up of shrill sharp earache inducing nonsense just took over the vast majority of scenes.

5 The false happy ending...

I could go on with this but I think my point has been made.

In fairness the acting wasn't atrocious, it wasn't great by any stretch of the imagination but I have seen worse.

All in all, not a good film, not worth the watch unless you're totally new to the genre and fancy being put off Horror for ever.

Well, with such a title, the movie was as to be expected...
paul_haakonsen4 December 2018
Well, initially I was a bit hesitant about spending time to sit down and watch this movie, despite it being a horror movie and all. Why is that? Well, solely because of the title of the movie. I mean, "Selfie From Hell", come on...

But I decided to give the movie the benefit of the doubt and actually sat down to watch it. Right. Well, I will say that there were some aspects to the movie that proved interesting enough, although they weren't fully utilized. Most of the movie was horribly mundane and just downright boring. The storyline also suffered horribly from being generic and predictable to the point where even a blind and deaf person would predict it well ahead of it happening.

The concept of the movie was interesting enough, just a shame that it was so inadequately brought to fruition on the screen. Whether this was because of the director, or because of a poorly written script, I can only guess. Though I assume it would be the latter.

Some of the acting performances in the movie were adequate, although you should take into consideration that there is about 5 people or so in the entire movie. So there was a lot of pressure riding on these acting talents, and I can't really claim that they managed to do so overly great.

The special effects in the movie were bland and far in between. As for the scares and spooky moments, nope, none of those. Mostly because you saw them coming a mile away, so no scare effects there.

All in all, then "Selfie From Hell" is not really one that I would recommend that you spend your time, money or effort on. Some of us suffer through movies such as this so the rest of you don't have to...

The dark side of the internet
Woodyanders28 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Julia (nicely played by Meelah Adams), an online vlogger from Germany, arrives in America to visit her cousin Hannah (a solid and appealing portrayal by Alyson Walker). After Julia gets stricken by a mysterious life-threatening illness, Hannah decides to investigate the dark side of the internet to find out what exactly is responsible for Julia's sudden illness.

Writer/director Erdal Ceylan relates the compelling story at a constant pace, takes time to develop the characters, grounds the fantastic premise in a believable everyday reality, and ably crafts a spooky and unsettling atmosphere. The sound acting from a capable cast keeps this movie humming: Tony Giroux as the helpful Trevor, Ian Butcher as sleazy creep F34r3473R, Tyler A. H. Smith as eerie phantom Selfieman, and Stephanie Gooden as sinister web hostess Josephine. The surprise grim ending packs a jolting punch. A neat little scarefest.

when the most intense feeling is fear .
AnthonyMeg13 January 2019
This paranormal film is suitable for those who are technophobics, it'll be a ten movie for them, but for me it was somewhat underwhelming and not as good as i expected it, but at least it is plainly clear in terms of its purpose and aim, the performace was not bad actually, but the lack of convincing scenarios is the flaw in the movie i like that fact that the beginning was as thrilling as the ending so it wasn't slow.

Terrible, awful, unwatchable dross.
iamthehollow21 February 2018
A film with a title like this can go one of two ways.

It can be quirky and inspired, not afraid to poke fun at itself and deliver a self aware dose of horror fun.

It could also be bottom feeder 'appeal to the kids' effluent.

Guess which path this film took?

The horrible latter that's what...there's nothing really wrong with any of the surface elements and especially early on in the film you could sort of see some effort put in, but this doesn't last as the ludicrous plot and motivations come to the fore.

Nothing really wrong with the lead actress who does try and make the best of what she's been given...but all the other actors are not convincing in the slightest and only sought to worsen the already broken atmosphere.

Plenty of really loud jump scares...none of which are in the least bit alarming.

When this inevitably appears on Netflix I would avoid it like the plague.

Screenplay from hell 0/10
aircodh99 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This might possibly be the worst film ever made. And trust me, I don't mean in a good way, like The Room or Plan 9 from Outer Space or some such, I mean, it is amateurish in almost every way imaginable.

Poor script, dreadful dialogue, slack pacing, lamentable acting, terrible lighting, ropey camerawork, dodgy art-direction, bad audio, appallingly inept storyline, virtually non-existent technical research, muddled narrative, and utterly atrocious directing.

Whomever it was that made this film, please, just stop. I mean really, please don't try to make anything else. Ever. And that especially goes for the writer of this pile of garbage. In fact, if you are the writer of this abysmal claptrap, never try to even put together a shopping list - let alone a screenplay - because in something of an amazing feat as far as writing is concerned, you manage to suck at it, as well as blow, at the same time.

Unnecessary Amounts of Jumpscares
lordkrythic21 February 2018
I guess I should go ahead and admit that I did not finish watching this movie. I made it about a quarter of the way through it before realizing the type of movie that it was, and at the same time, understanding that it was a waste of my time.

There is quite literally, and I could not make this up if I tried, a jump scare every minute to two minutes. And they aren't even well executed jump scares, either. If you watch a lot of movies you will probably agree with me that jump scares do not equate to good horror. It's a cheap way to get a reaction out of people. To be honest, only one of them got me, and the rest were just more and more annoying than the last. I stopped watching simply because they started to annoy me.

It's quite possible that this is exactly what the directors and writers were going for in this movie, to capitalize on the "selfie and jump scare fad", and that's why they are so ubiquitous throughout the movie. It's almost like they actually made sub-notes in the script that said "we don't know what to do here, so just add another jump scare and maybe no one will notice the lack of a storyline". The movie really is that bad, and quite frankly, I guess it's sort of my fault, because I went into a movie called "Selfie From Hell" and expected something a little bit existential.

I really don't know. Would I recommend this to a friend? No. Should you watch this? I would honestly say no, as well. And if you feel the need to watch it, at least do so on a free movie platform like Solarmovie or something similar. But certainly don't give these people any money, because they don't deserve it.

Tropey grot
debanjalee-ghosh4 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Okay I had to log in just to write this review and write it I shall. This is without a doubt the worst movie I've sat through in my 189 years of existence. The lead character 1) leaves her comatose cousin in bed minus food/water/medicines/medical help for days before the poor soul has to hover above her bed and die 2) receives a real time video from cuz's phone of cuz sleeping in bed and chalks it up to her sleepwalking 3) hears an intruder at night, finds main door wide open, shuts it back up and wanders around the house without turning any light switches on while yelling "I have a knife" 4)finds several news online of her cousin being dead, checks it on cousin's laptop as well as if it has some personalised search engine on, doesn't go to cops/try to verify with other relatives because of course who hasn't had a couple of fake death news to their name huh? 5) doesn't mention any of these to her only ally who's an online friend she's meeting for the first time because she has zero real ones since 6) she's apparently "seeing some strange things recently that are impossible to explain" like window curtains bellowing. Dude. WIND. 7) has zero internet safety awareness in spite of "having done a lot of online work", which frankly I'm not surprised at seeing all she did was type A LOT on her laptop. 8) gives away her name, email, phone number the first time she was asked by a random stranger on the dark web despite being warned several times. She even answers the call from the unknown dude right after. At least tape your camera? Nope. It's like a lamb with a sparkly jacket on is doing a slow salsa in a roomful of wolves. You just can't watch.

At this point in this murk you start cheering for the baddie to cut her up already. Well, they made the villain just as inane as this airhead. He's a dark web anarchist and he knows her name, phone number, email...but has to ask for her address because he's so good at Tor he's forgot google. And the pseudo computer science in this movie is insane. The random techie bypasses a laptop password by typing what appears to be a love ballad to the computer, triangulates and intercepts cellphone signals left and right with a beeping counter, the evil badman who's foddered countless for thrill sets up red pulsating lights and a couple of laptops for God knows what but gets so wordy that a noob tazes him before he can arrive at the punchline. All he does is snap a couple of selfies to invoke the spook but the laptops are a cool background I guess.

How does a film like this get made today? The only legible answer to that is probably the director secretly wants to lure more idiots in the dark web and send a few lambs to the real wolves out there. Kids, I say this earnestly, DON'T watch this movie. You'll lose quite a few brain cells you're never getting back.

Atmospheric Horror Overdrive
michaelant55521 February 2018
Girl has her cousin coming to stay and is supposed to be bringing her new boyfriend. Boyfriend's ill so he didn't come and her cousin is distracted by something sinister going on in her life connected to the dark web...

This goes all out for horror atmosphere and, by and large, succeeds in this endeavour, though I do find jump scares a cheap, unwelcome, and unnecessary tactic in horror movies.

The acting is okay, certainly nothing that would warrant a bad review.

The writing and directing were a bit irritating like, for horror effects, leaving rooms in the dark when any normal person would put a light on - especially if there is any chance there's a demonic presence in your immediate vicinity. Also, if you have someone visiting it would be polite to call an ambulance if they are catatonic. It's those kind of details that see the rating stars dropping swiftly by the minute as the movie unfolds.

Would I recommend it or watch it again? No.

This is all about horror sequences so if you like that and don't worry about the mindless plot holes and irrational behaviour then give it a go.

One other thing that springs to mind is the music score which at one point I think they actually tried to drive the viewers mad with a ridiculous heatbeat-like clanging sound that was far too loud and went on for so long that I had to remove my earphones.

Everything tastes gray

Warning: Spoilers
Hannah (Alyson Walker) is visited by her vlogger cousin Julie Lang (Meelah Adams) who operates a Vlog called "Selfies from Hell." We quickly learn something is not right with Julie and evil is following her. Hannah gets deep into the dark web in order to find answers.

The film had a number of good jump scares, but the overall plot explanation wasn't up to snuff. It left too many holes. Tony Giroux gave us one of the worst on screen CPR scenes: 2 breaths, 2 pumps near the neck. Why even bother? And the dark web does have a search engine contrary to the film. Facebook also operates on the dark web and there are 50 million research papers. It is not all sick stuff.

Guide: No swearing sex or nudity. I think Hannah showers wearing a towel.
