Yippee-ki-yay B.M.O.L.!
AdamDroge18 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Two part finale this week and I have a lot of thoughts to get out in a short amount of time, so let's get to it.

First and foremost, I have not been a fan of the British Men of Letters this season. I think it's been an absolutely atrocious story arc. Filler story for something better that they are setting up for. And pretty awful filler if you tell me, especially since they've gone around killing so many great characters this season. I get that the point is that we're supposed to hate them, but they did a little too good of a job with that. They're a useless group of turds that do nothing to help the show out AND make me hate them. After the fantastic Chuck/God arc last season, this has been a pretty pathetic way of following up.

That said, I haven't hated this season, because they have done a lot of great things that I'll mostly get to in a second in next episode's review. It's been awesome having Mary Winchester on the show and the Crowley/Lucifer stuff has been great as we build to Kelly giving birth to the son of Lucifer that spells disaster all over the place in a very good way.

But again, more of that later. For now we have to blow the BMOL out of the water because they've trapped Sam and Dean in the bunker along with Toni Bevell and Sam and Dean have had enough. After a few failed attempts to get out, Dean literally yippee-ki-yays his way out by blowing up the wall. And now we're off to war as Sam and Dean organize the remaining hunters to go for an all-out ambush.

Not going to lie, this was absolutely fantastic watching Sam and the hunters take down the BMOL. Was it a bit too easy? Perhaps. But I didn't care. It was super satisfying watching this group just totally blow the BMOL out of the water.

But that's not what made this episode so great. It was a nice bit of frosting on the cake, but the reason I love this episode is because of the Dean and Mary scenes. Thanks to the help of Toni Bevell, who for the first time this season was a tolerable character, Dean is able to go into the subconsciousness of Mary and pour his soul out to his Mom. The speech where he is telling her how much he hates her was incredible. She's ruined their lives and sent them down this miserable path. But then he brings that full circle by saying how much he loves her because she's his mom and he can't help it. This is the point where I feel Dean forgives his Mom for everything that's happened and is willing to move forward as they are. Then admitting to her that it's all worked out for the better because they've become pretty awesome was a great way to top that off.

Fortunately Dean was able to say enough to snap her out of the brainwashing because Mr. Ketch, I believe his name is, has waltzed his way into their place, killed Toni Bevell, which actually made me sad surprisingly, and ended the session in Mary's subconsciousness. He starts wailing on Dean and Dean can't do much to because of his gimp leg. I knew Mary was going to step in and finish the job. And I was happy when it happened.

About at this same time, Sam and Jody have just about defeated the BMOL when the final lady is begging them to save her life because Crowley has released Lucifer into the world and they need the help of the BMOL to stop Lucifer. I was begging Sam to pass on that offer and end this here and now, even though it probably meant bad things were going to happen with the whole Lucifer situation, I mean this is a Supernatural finale, which is why I was super happy to hear the line.

"We'll pass."

Bang.

So satisfying. Now we get to go hug it out with Sam, Dean and Mary which really got to me. Mary has done a lot of awful things this season, but can you blame her? I mean, what's the realistic situation for something like this? If they were to make it all rainbows and butterflies, that would be pretty lame. Which is why I've loved her arc this season. It's felt very human. To see Sam and Dean honestly forgive her for everything was excellent. And a great way to set up the actual finale.

To be continued...

A performance to remember...

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the fact that they ended the BMOL storyline - the hunters working together to get rid of them was a satisfying conclusion. But the part that got to me was Jensen's performance as Dean travelled into Mary's subconscious. I have never posted on IMDB before, & it's not often that I cry whilst watching TV shows, but I had to acknowledge this, as it was one of the rare times that I have cried. Jensen's capacity to show a vast range of emotions never ceases to amaze me, & this is a performance I'll never forget. He is certainly an underrated actor.

Satisfying

Warning: Spoilers
This season has many plot issues, but this spefic episode has a very satisfying departure from the British Men of Letters. The scene with Dean in Mary's head was heartbreaking. Jensen is a really good actor.

Pretty decent Penultimate episode
Kingslaay1 June 2017
This was an eventful and entertaining episode before the Season finale.

We knew the Winchesters would manage to escape their bunker with so many supplies. It was nice to have Sam and Dean reflect on their journey so far and consider how did we end up here? Sam talks about not being scared to be a leader rather than a follower, is this an ironic reference to his character's direction and story lines over the last several seasons? We are slowly starting to see more of these moments between the brothers. Once they escape they decide to answer the fans cries and take out the British Men of Letters (BMOL).

What can be said of the BMOL? They were first just referenced in earlier seasons when Abaddon was introduced and it seemed to work. Despite this it felt this sinister organization was shoved into the Supernatural universe and they never flew but became space fillers. The funny thing is their story could have worked so well in the show had it been introduced early on, even if they had just briefly spoken of them or teamed up with one of their rogue agents to learn about them. Then the battle with them would have really been built up like anything but I knew in those early years they had plenty of juicy ideas planned. However when brought into the fold they were an annoyance and hard to buy into as a group that existed for many years. Their absence for the apocalypse and other events was poorly explained.

It was great for Sam to lead a pack of hunters while an injured Dean took a more sentimental route to bring Mary back. The showdown with the BMOL was very well done with Sam and Jodi. I am so glad they finally killed off their story line (I hope) and blew their headquarters to smithereens. I was so pleased to see Lady Bevell finally killed off as well as Ketch after Mary was brought back. We saw a great moment with Sam, Dean and Mary. The embrace and real reunion we had hoped to see from the beginning of the season.

Now this is the supernatural I am talking about!
Aries_Primal19 May 2017
If the entire season was so good, show should be on top again. Emotions, real fight, blood, kills, terror and fear - we felt it all, you did a great job! I became tired of pointless conversations, a few hits, some drop weapons and case solved in one episode. Now this is my Supernatural! Btw, just so you know, if you touch Cas I will kill you. Cas is a family. Since season 4 there's no more Sam and Dean, they are Sam, Dean and Cas. And the Impala of course. I don't believe you are so stupid to kill your main character, but don't you dare touch him. I'm warning you.

actually devastating

So so good. Bawled my eyes out for about half an hour afterwards. I love that this episode explored some different character perspectives, especially the contrast of Sam going into a physical battle while Dean stayed back to fight the mental battle of bringing Mary back. Dean's speech to Mary left me in a state of disarray that I am still recovering from. I love so much that this season has explored more of Dean's internal struggles, but this episode right here really struck a cord. Amazing episode. I've watched up to this point once before, but the second time around was even better. I can't wait to watch the season finale tonight and cry even more!

good but not satisfying enough
kisafishy2 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say I wanted them dead for a long time

now they are, but not even near satisfying level

first of all, its too easy. nothing worth remembering

just, normal kills, go in shooting, bodies drop the "highly trained BMOL" just not nearly skilled enough to make it an interesting fight. And the American hunters.....well one of them just got his neck snapped by an old lady who was clearly not in the battle field for a long time.

remember the fighting scene when the boys escaped prison? that was superb. it shows just how highly skilled they are, even with nothing much to work with. now this? this is just lame. this is just.....I don't know how to describe it, its just not epic enough for the "end of season fight"

in other word, I don't feel any thrilling from this episode

on the other hand, I give this episode a 7 because 1. although not satisfying, BMOL are dead. 2. Dean saving Mary scene is good. Best thing ever happen in this episode.

Bmol vs hunters
shwetafabm29 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First strike-why does Lady whatever say the organization wants her dead when we clearly see that Ketch is the one who does it for himself. And if we are to believe the organization wants her dead we can't because there is zero reason for that. Second strike-we know the bunker isn't safe so really? Third strike-lady whatever and her change of heart, is this why we saw the child in S11? To give us this scene. She doesn't run? Why? No reason. Overall the easiness of hunters vs bmol. Why do the bmol want them dead? I'll keep asking that till the end of time. That Sammy speech lays flat because the motivations of bmol wanting hunters dead is stupid. Good thing was the Mary and Dean dialogue.

Yeah no...quality is more than acting
CubsandCulture5 July 2021
I can only imagine that this episode has such a high rating here because Ackles does manage to turn in one of his best performances of the later seasons. Likewise, Smith is also really good in this episode. But I find the plot of this episode an overblown bore and I don't think the emotional material coheres all that well with prior text.

Dean's resentment of and anger at Mary is barely set-up; most of the set-up is in season 12 around Mary leaving and/or working with the BMOL. But this episode drags up ancient family history and re-contextualizes Dean's daddy issues as mommy issues. This weakens Dean's characterization instead of making it richer; moreover, Dean/writers are exceptionally harsh on Mary and it strikes me as unfair.

Worst of all is the exact words on the page are *terrible* in that the entire central emotional scene is written with Dean verbalizing exactly what he is feeling. This is not good writing-subtext should be a thing!-but it is even worse with Dean because he has always bottled up for more than 11 years.

The episode emotional involvement is cheap and manipulative.
