Another 'body in a river' mystery
Tweekums20 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
These comments cover the whole two part story not just the concluding episode.

As this story opens the body of Lorna Katz is found floating in the Thames. Soon after the discovery is reported Ali and Chris Tresize turn up at the police station saying that they think her death could be linked to the disappearance of their daughter, Ruth, three years previously. Early on Lorna's recently dumped boyfriend is suspected but then he too is killed, as he tries to investigate a picture he had sent her shortly before she was killed. It is established that both Lorna and Ruth had both dated a boy named Aaron Logan who lives on a house boat on the River Lea which makes the police suspect he may be involved; there is also the possibility that Ruth's father was physically abusive. As the story reaches its half way point Ali Tresize learns that the police suspect Aaron Logan and decides to take matters into her own hands. This leads to the police blaming Nikki for the leak even though all she did was refuse to confirm or deny something Ali already suspected.

This was a decent enough story with plenty of suspects with various motives although the actual killer isn't too obvious… it would be really radical if one day the killer in a murder mystery was actually one of the early, more obvious suspects! That said it was fun to watch as there were some surprising moments. The cast does a solid job; notably Sarah Smart as Ali and Eva Pope as DI Heather Ashton; as well as the regular cast of course. Overall a decent mid-season episode that fans of the show should enjoy.

Slightly disappointed in this one.

It's not often, probably the first time of saying this, but what a totally boring story. The first part was average, and this second part is no better. It must be the most telegraphed conclusion they've ever used. It just never really comes to life at any point, and when it does, you'll have worked it out. I wasn't Keen on Sarah Smart's character, she's normally a fine character actress who adds life to every part, somehow this just doesn't work.

The production values are very good, it's well made. Some aspects of the story in general are a little questionable, Nikki's involvement for one, the interviewing another. The series overall is very good, this one's just a bit below par, it's watchable, just not the usual standard.

We Probably Saw It Coming

On at least four occasions we see a young boy moving toward a bathroom where his mother lies submerged in the tub, dead. Each time different words are spoken. I had a pretty good idea who the responsible character was. The mother of one of the girls, Ali, goes bananas every time she is told about the possible death (not disappearance) of her daughter. She has an incredible set of lungs. But it gets down to the connections of the brothers. This series has such high standards that I still give an average episode a nine.
