For fifty-nine episodes, Sophie Turner played the role of Sansa Stark on the hit series Game of Thrones. For sixty-two episodes, Kit Harington played the role of Jon Snow on that same show. And now Turner and Harington are set to work together again, as Deadline reports that they have both signed on to star in the Gothic horror film The Dreadful! This film is coming our way from writer/director Natasha Kermani, who has previously directed the thriller Shattered, the sci-fi drama Imitation Girl, and the horror film Lucky, as well as multiple short films and a segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/85.
The Dreadful will be set against the backdrop of the War of the Roses, which took place from 1455 to 1487. The story follows Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law Morwen, who live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. But when a man (Harington) from their past returns,...

After exploring the 90s in the previous two entries, V/H/S/85, the sixth(!) entry in the V/H/S franchise, throws things back to the decade where VHS ruled the roost – once again using the found-footage format to tell a handful of spooky stories from directors David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
After a brief flick through 80s television, replete with a pause on an Unsolved Mysteries-style show called Total Copy, which tells the story of Rory a test subject at Stamer University, to open proceedings. A show that the film returns to throughout its running time before wrapping things up in traditional anthology fashion and revealing Rory’s connection to the shorts we’ve just watched.

The “V/H/S” franchise was already on death’s door by the time Shudder resurrected it as an annual streaming event in 2021. So it would be inaccurate to blame the warmed-over familiarity of its sixth installment on the fact that Bloody Disgusting has to churn out another feature-length omnibus every October — especially because the freshest and most satisfying of the five shorts that make up “V/H/S/85” comes from series producer David Bruckner, who should be more burned out on the concept than anyone else at this point. Nevertheless, the “Now That’s What I Call Found Footage!”-ification of these horror anthologies has inevitably confronted them with a degree of saminess, an ironic symptom of a process that leaves precious little time for quality control.

"Where did you get those tapes?!" Shudder + Bloody Disgusting have revealed the main official trailer for V/H/S/85, the next film in this found footage anthology series. It's now the fifth one - V/H/S/99 debuted just last year (also on Shudder now). As expected, V/H/S/85 (#5) is premiering at Fantastic Fest in TX this week before streaming in October. "Get ready for a found footage compilation of disembowelment, clubbing, and dismemberment, just to name a few of the grisly deaths. It’s Reaganomics and imperial disillusionment in the way that only the V/H/S movies can do them — with the fake blood hose nozzle cranked up to the soak setting." Featuring new segments made by the horror filmmakers: Mike P. Nelson, Natasha Kermani, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Scott Derrickson, David Bruckner. The Tron-themed one looks bonkers. This whole thing looks insane! Just as expected - more VHS madness. // Continue Reading ›...

"Why don't you just tell us where you got these video tapes from?" Back for even more scary shenanigans! Shudder, Studio71, Cinepocalypse & Bloody Disgusting are this time rewinding all the way back to the 1980s with V/H/S/85, which will have its World Premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest, in Austin, Texas (September 21 – 28).
“The iconic found footage series returns with an array of explosive, bloody scares set in a decade obsessed with serial killers and the Satanic Panic,” writes Fantastic Fest of the film which says goodbye to the nostalgic neon lights and hello to the grit and grime of the ’80s.
V/H/S/85 joins our growing franchise that now consists of several films, including V/H/S, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, and the spinoff feature SiREN.
Here are the directors who took part in 85…
The only legacy filmmaker is David Bruckner, who will be spearheading the latest entry. Bruckner directed the “Amateur Night” segment of the first V/H/S which featured the breakout performance of Hannah Fierman as a succubus.

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.
Thankfully, though, the door swung back open in...

Horror has always been a genre that reflects its times. In the wake of #MeToo and an increased focus on the experiences and the prominence of women, both in the film industry and more generally, we have seen female writers and directors seek to fold those themes into genre cinema. Perhaps the most notable examples being the recent remakes of Black Christmas (directed by Sophia Takal) and The Craft (directed by Zoe Lister-Jones). With Lucky, writer/star Brea Grant and director Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl) aren’t reinterpreting one specific text through that lens, rather they’re filtering a whole subgenre: the slasher.
May (Grant) is a writer just finishing her book tour. One night, she wakes to see a masked man outside her house. When she wakes her husband Ted (Dhruv Uday Singh) he seems nonplussed, confusing May by telling her ‘that’s the guy who shows up every...

Luck isn’t with self-help author May Ryer lately. Her books aren’t selling and when a masked intruder breaks into the house she shares with husband no one seems concerned. Even the condescending investigating cop says she’s lucky things didn’t go worse. But then they do as the attacker keeps appearing, continuing to terrorize May with an almost supernatural ability no matter how valiantly she fights back…
Brea Grant seems to be on a role when it comes to genre filmmaking, she wrote the fantastic 12 Hour Shift, which screened at Grimmfest earlier this month, and now she’s not only written but also stars in Lucky – which features some similar themes, and shares a musical number (smaller in scope this time round) but...

Screened as a selection of the virtual 2020 Fantasia Film Festival. It seems as if one of the common themes in many films this year is stalking. Back in February, we got to see Elisabeth Moss fighting the "Invisible Man". This heinous act, appearing more and more in TV & film, relates to many people on a personal level, especially women. We can see similar themes (and more) in Lucky, the spine-chilling thriller directed by Natasha Kermani and written by actress / filmmaker Brea Grant (director of this year's 12 Hours Shift), who also stars as May, the main character of the film. What makes Lucky unusual is its post-reflection consideration that lingers long after finishing the thriller. May is a suburban wife and a writer. Her self-help / success books are quite popular. Generally, she doesn't have anything to complain about. However, that completely changes when she wakes up in the middle of ...

With the 2020 Fantasia Film Festival wrapping up this week, here’s a look at the final three films this writer had the opportunity to screen during the virtual fest (and enjoyed immensely), including Natasha Kermani’s Lucky, Dinner in America from writer/director Adam Rehmeier, and Minor Premise, which was co-written and directed by Eric Schultz.
Lucky: If Natasha Kermani had been contemplating other titles for her latest film project, Gaslighting: The Movie would have been a wholly appropriate, albeit a very on-the-nose, choice as well. But Lucky works pretty damn well, too, as it is in reference to a moment in the film when the main character, May, is informed by her manager/agent that she should consider herself “lucky” after a professional opportunity works out to her advantage, instead of congratulating her for all of her hard work. Truth be told, that’s the moment Lucky totally clicked for me,...

Orginally intended to premiere at SXSW and a slew of other festivals, Lucky plays for Canadian audiences via virtual Fantasia 2020. Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl) directs writer and star Brea Grant in a story about a self-help author who can't seem to help herself. Grant plays May, who must not only deal with an absentee husband, but also a nightly male assailant. Think a murderous Groundhog Day, filled with the looming threat of men who serve to traumatize women into a heightened sense of vigilance. Any man anywhere can appear instantly to attack, maim, rape, or kill. For most men --- who've not had the experience of being stalked, catcalled, oppressed, controlled,...

Natasha Kermani is one of the most interesting filmmaker of her generation. Having loved her 2017 film Imitation Girl, I was excited to hear that her latest work had been picked up by Fantasia and arranged to see it as soon as possible.
Lucky, written by Brea Grant is the story of a woman who persistently finds that a man is trying to kill her, but who doesn’t seem to to be able to get anyone to treat the matter with sufficient seriousness. It’s a complicated piece of work with a lot gong on under the surface. Natasha tells me that the script spoke to her straight away.

Neil Marshall’s The Reckoning Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
The first part of this year's Fantasia International Film Festival was announced today, including opening film The Reckoning, the latest thriller by Neil Marshall, which is set against the backdrop of England's Great Plague and subsequent witch hunts. It stars Charlotte Kirk and Sean Pertwee and will be the second Fantasia opener for Marshall, whose The Descent was the headlines 15 years ago.
The festival will celebrate 45 years of Troma with Lloyd Kaufman's take on The Tempest, his second stab at Shakespeare after Tromeo And Juliet in 1996. Other highlights include Lucky, the second feature by Imitation Girl director Natasha Kermani, which will remind you to play it safe and wear your mask because you won't want to be the person without one, plus Chino Moya's Undergods, which journeys through a fantastically decaying Europe and employs the talents of Geza Rohrig and Kate Dickie.

One of my favorite parts of the Halloween season is listening to seasonal music, be it classics like “Grimm Grinning Ghosts” from Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride or familiar tracks from horror movies like Alice Cooper’s “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Hell, I’ll even do deep cuts like Frank Vinci’s “Just What I’ve Been Looking For” from Sleepaway Camp or Gowan’s “Moonlight Desires,” most recently used in WolfCop. I’m lucky enough to have friends that make me Halloween mixes, too, giving me plenty to listen to all month long.
My new favorite Halloween album, though, is a little unconventional and a whole lot of fun. Sean Keller, a musician, actor, and screenwriter (Hulu’s All That We Destroy), has recorded the ultimate Halloween mix this year: The Killer Sounds of Halloween, 13 original songs from 13 fake bands.

Lauren Ashley Carter with Jerry G Angelo in Artik
Three years ago my colleague Paul interviewed Lauren Ashley Carter about her striking performance in Mickey Keating’s Darling. Since then she’s appeared in the likes of Imitation Girl, Black Site and Darlin’, always making an impression, and now she can be seen as the loyal partner of a serial killer in Tom Botchii Skowronski’s Artik.
Though present in only a few scenes, the character of Flin is vital to the story, contextualising Artik’s actions and humanising a family on the brink. She also proves to be quite formidable in her own right. Two things persuaded Lauren to say yes to the role, she says.

The next in-house production in the Dread pipeline is Lucky, a feminist horror film that begins preproduction soon in Los Angeles, Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl) directs from a script by
Brea Grant.
Grant also stars as May, a suburban mother stalked night after night by a threatening but elusive figure. With few clues as evidence and no witnesses, she finds her story and her sanity questioned by authorities. As each attack intensifies, and with no one to turn to for help, May finds herself alone and locked in an increasingly vicious battle with someone or something that may be unstoppable.

In her first feature, Imitation Girl, director, Natasha Kermani tells a sci-fi story that refreshingly avoids genre cliches and instead presents audiences with a unique and exciting auteurist vision. One of the most fascinating things about Imitation Girl is its tone, which moves in and out of dreamy abstraction while entirely avoiding art house preciousness. […]

In 2016, throughout Wisconsin, several clowns were sighted around the state. The figures would appear in alleys or dark spaces, holding black balloons. These sightings were part of the clown roaming craze, which took place throughout the year. Some of these sightings were part of director Adam Krause's publicity stunt, which hoped to draw attention to his horror short "Gags." In 2018, this short film has been developed into a feature film. This title will have its World Premiere at the Cinepocalypse Film Festival, in Chicago, Illinois. The film stars: Lauren Ashley Carter, Tracy Perez (Devil May Call), Aaron Christensen and Evan Gamble. To show in late June, a preview of the feature film Gags is hosted here. The film is an anthology. There are at least four tales, which cover socio-political issues. The short films loosely follow: a reporter, a right wing podcast pundit, a pair of cops and a trio of troublemaking teens.

One of the more unique films I've seen lately is Natasha Kermani's Imitation Girl, a sci-fi indie drama that's made a splash on the festival circuit. The film stars Lauren Ashley Carter (Premium Rush, Darling, Jug Face) in dual roles --- one as Julianna, an adult film star who's beginning to question her career, and the other as an alien who's taken on Julianna's form. The film has some great reviews online, from blogs to IMDb, and it's easy to see why. It's impeccably made, doesn't overexplain its plot, and is beautifully shot. I spoke to director Natasha Kermani on her feature debut and what that took --- from working with Lewis Black to shooting in uncooperative weather to nabbing an Emmy-winning cinematographer. Imitation Girl is a striking...

"I'm looking for a traveling companion." Epic Pictures Releasing has unveiled the first official trailer for a "mind-bending", psychological sci-fi thriller titled Imitation Girl, made by writer and director Natasha Kermani. Imitation Girl stars Lauren Ashley Carter (seen in the films Darling, King Rat) as a wandering space alien who lands in the middle of the New Mexico desert and takes on the form of another woman (hence the imitation). Her counterpart is a former concert pianist living in New York City. Eventually their paths will cross, as an exploration of two lost souls. The cast includes Neimah Djourabchi, Adam David Thompson, Catherine Mary Stewart, Stefanie Woodburn, Sanam Erfani, and Kevin O'Rourke. This looks a bit too bland for my tastes. Not enough real, edgy sci-fi, just some ideas but nothing tangible. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Natasha Kermani's Imitation Girl, direct from YouTube: When an alien...

The Girl Who Fell To Earth! A mysterious being appears in the desert and assumes the identity of the first person she sees – a magazine cover girl. Taken in by Iranian immigrants, she forms an understanding of her new surroundings, and comes to appreciate the beauty and the sadness of her new world. Now it’s time to reach out to Julianna, her world-weary earthly double, who knows all about glitz and grit working as an entertainer in New York City. For only by sacrificing themselves to each other can the cosmic twins complete the full portrait of a woman.

Back in the heart of London’s West End for its 18th ‘adults-only’ anniversary, the world renowned horror and fantasy film festival will take place at the Cineworld Leicester Square and The Prince Charles Cinema from Aug 24 – Aug 28 2017, taking over five screens to present 64 films including 20 World, 22 European and 18 UK Premieres. Fourteen countries are represented spanning five continents, reflecting the current global popularity of the genre.
The opening night attraction is the global premiere of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s criminally entertaining Cult of Chucky (pictured above), with writer and director Don Mancini and stars Jennifer Tilly and Fiona Dourif in attendance, alongside the iconic deadly doll of destruction himself. The month of June has been flying by quicker than I can even believe, as we’re already a week out from the end of the 2017 Dances With Films festival, which took over the historic Chinese Theater in Los Angeles earlier this month. During Dwf, I had the opportunity to catch several intriguing genre films, including Devil’s Whisper, Inheritance, Imitation Girl, and Central Park, and here’s a summary of my thoughts on these four flicks:
Devil’s Whisper: There are a few aspects that I enjoyed about Devil’s Whisper, but unfortunately in the end, a somewhat predictable conclusion coupled with some hokey dialogue ends up derailing the supernatural story from becoming anything beyond “it’s fine.”
Co-writer/director Adam Ripp admirably takes the road left traveled in Devil’s Whisper (especially in relation to other recent possession-related movies), as we follow a teenager named Alex (Luca Oriel...

On Tuesday, June 6th, writer/director Natasha Kermani’s science fiction-fueled exploration of identity, Imitation Girl, will celebrate its Los Angeles premiere at the 2017 Dances With Film festival being held at the Chinese Theaters in Los Angeles. To mark the occasion, Daily Dead had the chance to speak with Kermani about collaborating with Imitation Girl star Lauren Ashley Carter (Darling, The Mind’s Eye, Pod), using genre elements to explore the themes of identity and humanity, and creating a film with grandeur while working within the constraints of a tight budget.
Great job on the film, Natasha. Because I saw that Lauren was starring in this, I had a feeling that I was going to enjoy it. And I was so glad that it lived up to that expectation for me, because I just fell in love with the story. And Lauren’s great, too, so congratulations again.

Imitation Girl, a new feature film from Iranian-American filmmaker Natasha Kermani has been included in the Official Selection of the Cinequest Film & Vr Festival 2017, and will celebrate its world premiere in March. Her new film features indie horror actress Lauren Ashley Carter (Darling and The Mind's Eye) in a dual role. The dramatic sci-fi looks to be a departure from the types of film we have come accustomed to seeing the doe-eyed actress in. There is a selection of stills and a trailer after the official synopsis. A mysterious being appears in the Southwestern desert and assumes the identity of the first person she sees - a woman on a magazine cover.
