The best Star Wars fan-film I've seen so far!
danielnaslund10 March 2016
The special effects were really well done, the acting was above average when it comes to fan movies, it kept you excited. The pacing was good and not too fast. The choreography was outstanding and the make-up and practical effects were magnificent. This is by far the best fan-movie I've seen to date, it outranks fan films such as Star Wars: Legends Legacy of the Force, Star Wars: Threads of Destiny and many more. I can't wait to see what more Star Wars the makers of Darth Maul: Apprentice will release. Hopefully more fan-films will come our way soon.

It surpassed my expectations, the 20 minutes I spent watching this fan- film I didn't regret one bit. Overall I give the movie a 9/10 (For fan- films, as this isn't a blockbuster movie)

An Excellently Executed Short Film
JasonT41325 September 2016
The 15+ minutes that are contained in this fantastic short film are action packed to the core and contain some fabulous lightsaber action. The Darth Maul character is given a little more depth here and we get to learn a little more about him in between the non-stop saberplay.

This is I must say, hands down the best fan made films in the sci-fi universe that I have seen besides the excellent STAR TREK CONTINUES episodes. Directed, written and produced by Shawn Bu, Shawn, whomever you are, I really look forward to whatever you are putting out next. Hopefully another Star Wars related feature. Thank you for this film! Highly Recommended!!!

A must Watch for Star Wars Fans

Warning: Spoilers
A German production with incredible choreography that concludes the training of one of the most awesome Star Wars Bad-Asses in Darth Maul!

This short movie is packed with all the action you need when Darth Maul is sent to a planet by Palpatine where he faces a group of Jedi (incl. Jedi Masters, Knights and Apprentices), kills them off to conclude his training and be granted the title of Darth Maul.

Although it's an independent production the effects are stunning and fitting.

After just 4 days online this had already over 4 Million views on Youtube. Well deserved.

Fantastic! Action packed! So impressed!!
JustSarahB4 January 2017
This short film was 17+ minutes of awesome! I'm so impressed with everything about it! The story, the acting, the skill of the actors, all amazing! Death Maul looks fantastic, so do the other characters. The action packed fight scenes were phenomenal to watch! It's hard to believe, for me at least, that this is a fan film! I would love to see more from the people that created this, I've watched it several times already, it's incredible, from start to finish! Everything about it looks so authentic, if you are reading reviews debating if you should watch just stop and check it out, whether you are a huge Star Wars fan or not, It's definitely worth it!

Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I am not the greatest Star Wars fan, but this film's rising popularity made me curious. "Darth Maul: Apprentice" is a 15-minute (without credits) short film that was released roughly 2 weeks ago and managed 6.5 million clicks on Youtube since then. Not bad at all. The director is Shawn Bu and do not be mislead by the name: This is a German production with English language though. It shows us Darth Maul's rise to power. There is no denying this is really very good for a fan film and not many of these come close to such a level. People who appreciate Star Wars more than I do may even have a great time watching this one. I had a good time. The actors in here, especially Mathis Landwehr, are all also quite experienced already, definitely also more than usual for a fan film. I recommend checking this one out. Thumbs up.

Everything you wanted from Darth Maul
sdmeshotto11 July 2016
The amount of work that went into this fan film is amazing. Typically fan films have crappy picture, audio, and dialogue. Everything about this was professional. Even the CGI was good. The world would be a merrier place if every fan film was as good as this.

I give this a 10, simply because, since it is a short film and is full of well coordinated cinematography and lightsaber dueling, there isn't anything to critique. It's perfect.

We all wanted more screen time out of Darth Maul, and more action. It keeps within his character's savageness. This short film perfects this. Darth Maul taking on like 6 Jedi. It's a dream come true. Like, it's impossible not to like it. Go watch it on Youtube right now.

Go, go! *makes shooing gesture with hand*

Good for a fan film, but still not good
ectreece5 January 2020
I get that this is definitely higher quality than most fan films, and also has better acting and is pretty well-choreographed, but it's still not great. A lot of people are rating it 10s, and it has a rating of 7.7, which is the same rating of certain excellent movies, and higher than some of the actual Star Wars movies. So, even though it's an impressive short film to be made and funded purely by fans, it still is just "ok," and certainly doesn't meet the standards of actual Star Wars movies, except The Rise Of Skywalker, which I will gladly admit is definitely worse than this fan film.

I usually am not a fan of fan-films, but this is very very well done. Maul is one of my favorite characters in Star Wars so i can't believe it took me so long to come across this.its beyond an excellent job and in my opinion this should be canon :).

In the world of corporate board members aiming to get as much merchandise from an iconic saga, this Short film gives the fans something to celebrate and enjoy.

The choreography is great and the premise within Star Wars is believable.

The Phantom Menace should have began with this!
Sheldon_biamonte19 February 2019
Okay...here's what you do...imagine that this short film is the actual intro to The Phantom Menace. Now, you have that well deserved screen time that Maul should have had in the original, and an action packed beginning that is way more exciting than 2 Jedi resolving a trade dispute. In fact, I'll make it even easier for you Star Wars fans; here's a new crawl I wrote that you can read before watching this masterpiece and then following it up with TPM:

The Galactic Republic is now secretly under the control of a Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, and his apprentice, Maul, who is completing his training. His last task, to kill a group of Jedi.

At the same time, Sidious begins his manipulation of the Republic by employing the greedy Trade Federation to block all trade to the planet, Naboo.

Although its people and leader, Queen Amidala, are peaceful, the blockade serves as a political device for Sidious to gain power in the Galactic Senate. Two Jedi Knights attempt to negotiate with the leaders of the Trade Federation

Now all you have to do is try to ignore the Jar Jar antics, and you'll have a much richer and more adult oriented film. Try this out; guarantee you'll enjoy TPM more than you did before.

The movie Darth Maul deserved. I'd love to see more.
angiris31 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I find it outstanding how passionate fans can make a better star wars film than big Hollywood directors from time to time. Lord knows this film has true heart and soul put into it.

Lets keep it simple

Action: Fantastic, good choreography, solid acting, very well executed and honestly surprisingly damn good considering its a fan- film.

Story: Darth Maul becoming a true sith. Its great. And I love how we finally see his true potential which was only depicted properly in the comics unlike Phantom Menace. Really happy to see him done justice.

Effects: They are really good. Both in regard to visuals and sound. The lightsabers look great, believable, the sound design is awesome and the soundtrack fits quite well too.

Actors and costumes: It works. Really damn well. Darth Maul looks terrifying and very very convincing. Costumes are great, the movie doesn't look cheap. One thing though. I was finding it hilarious how the jedi master with them looked like Pewdiepie. Didn't kill anything though because he was cool and the dialog with the terrified padawan was a really nice touch to portray the Jedi as more than just practice for Maul. Not to mention the small but cool character progression of the padawan when she decides to take a final stand against Maul although all odds were against her.

Bottomline: I really love this film. I wish it was longer. I want more like this. Definitely the best Star Wars fan-film I've ever seen.

Thank you to the actors, directors and writers for this. 8 out of 10. Fantastic fan-film. A must see for all Star Wars fans as well as Maul fans who hated Lucas not doing him justice in Phantom Menace. This is your film.

Hope to see more like this.

It's so great that something can inspire people to create. This is quite well done and enjoyable with good acting, especially with how difficult it can be to convey subtleties past so much makeup and prosthetics.

The only problem with this fan film is that the stupid Palawan female was the last one alive and basically the main Jedi but she didn't do anything for the whole movie!!!

Essential Star Wars
Mara-Jade-Skywalker-2310 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This 2016 short film from the minds of Star Wars fans, is easily comparable to the original trilogy and prequel films. "Darth Maul: Apprentice" was a fan-film released online, and it's one of the best pieces of Star Wars media... It's an impressive visual spectacle, and a film filled to the brim with a surprising amount of substance.

Praises:

1.) The Visuals: Okay, first I will discuss the less important aspects of the film, then move on to the writing and story. But first...the visuals. The film's visual style is...how do I put it...astounding. While the CGI effects don't look especially real, for a fan-film, they're pretty impressive. Along with that, the make-up and costumes are well made and clearly had put has a lot of effort put into it. The cinematography is perfect, and the film is shot on real location. And if the film had a bigger budget, or was made a few years earlier, it would look like a big budget blockbuster. And even still, just look at the film, and it would be hard to guess that it was a fan-project.

2.) The Characters: Now, into the more important parts of a movie. The characters are all excellently written. First I will discuss the two main Jedi, then the title character.

The two main characters of the film are, and the Jedi are very simple characters, but I like to say, less is more, and as this is a short film, these kinds of films value that saying. The master and apprentice relationship is pretty well demonstrated. Simply through visuals we can see the bond they share, by staying by each other's side and defending each other. And both actors (Mathis Landwehr and Svenja Jung) gave excellent performances (for a fan-film). But the two also contained flaws, as the Jedi master was too confident in his abilities to fight Maul, soon leading to his own demise. And the apprentice didn't have the confidence to fight him. Until she was cornered by the Sith at the end of the film, finally taking the courage to fight him, but it still wasn't enough. And she was killed as well.

However, the most interesting character in the film was Darth Maul. As he relentlessly hunted down the Jedi, we saw his compassion. As he kind of felt bad about killing every Jedi. Evident by the final confrontation, where he clearly hesitated in killing the Jedi apprentice. But sense his master was watching him, he mercilessly killed her. In a scene that was both heart-breaking and chilling to the bone. The film shows us a side we never saw to Darth Maul, his compassion and sorrow, a side that was killed by his master, Darth Sidious. As in just 18 minutes, we see the complete transformation and arc of this man. Loosing his softer side, soon being taken by the monster in him.

The only depiction of Maul I can compare it to is the one in "The Clone Wars" series. And in that, he is a much different person. This is early Maul, someone who didn't out as a demented person, but became one. It's very much a Nurture vs. Nature thing, Maul being turned into an evil person. At least, that's my interpretation.

3.) Story and Themes: The story of "Darth Maul: Apprentice" is a story of survival. The two main Jedi being ill-equipped to survive. And Darth Maul hunting them down. He was the hunter, and they were the hunted. Maul learning to embrace his status as the hunter, and do what he believed needed to be done. Even when it would have been a good choice to run, a suggestion the Jedi apprentice made to her master, but the master being too cocky. Believing he could be the hunter, but being dead wrong. And when the apprentice was cornered, she decided to survive, but wasn't equipped for the challenge.

Again, maybe I'm reading too deep, and it was just meant to be a cool fan-film. But I believe there was an overarching theme in this film. And the fact I was able to get all that from a short fan-film, still surprises me. And while this film is able to make me think like that, and write this review, some two or even three-hour films can't write this well, with more time than this film has to tell its story simply boggles my mind.

Well...to conclude, less is more. Sometimes, by having less your more creative, and you are able to craft something more interesting. This film is somehow better than the stuff Disney is making with Star Wars, because it's made by people who don't care, and have no passion for Star Wars. This on the other-hand, is made by people who like the franchise, and wanting to make a good film about Star Wars. It's a film that shows, art doesn't come from who has the most money, it comes from who has the most passion. And the force is strong with this one.

Certainly worth checking out
ericstevenson23 September 2023
I've seen a lot of "Star Wars" fan films over the years and this is pretty awesome. The plot is relatively simple. Darth Maul is finishing his training by hunting down six Jedi. Only one appears at first, so he fights five Jedi at once. The makeup is absolutely amazing. Some people thought it was actually Darth Maul's actor, Ray Park in this.

It isn't, but it's a wonderful imitation. It's hard to tell with so much makeup. I was thinking this would be about Darth Maul after getting cut in half. Expanded Universe talks about that a lot. It was amazing to see such a great imitation. I will admit it was kind of dumb how they didn't retreat after over half of their allies were cut down. ***1/2.
