One story well worth telling
TheLittleSongbird19 September 2018
When 'Once Upon a Time' first started it was highly addictive and made the most of a truly great and creative premise. Really loved the idea of turning familiar fairy tales on their heads and putting own interpretations on them and the show early on clearly had clearly had a ball. Watched it without fail every time it came on and it was often a highlight of the week. Which was why it was sad when it ran out of ideas and lost its magic in the later seasons.

The first four seasons had a few ups and downs, like blips in some of the writing, effects and characters that are not as interesting or as well used as they could be, but were on the most part very solid. Many episodes being good to fantastic, with interesting spins on characters, great character interactions and performances and compelling and emotionally involving back-stories for most of the characters. So was expecting a good deal from Season 5 and "The Dark Swan" didn't disappoint at all. All the episodes between that episode and "Devil's Due" ranged to me from decent to brilliant, before reaching disappointment with "Our Decay" and especially "The Brothers Jones" and then picking up somewhat after while still a variable step down in quality.

"An Untold Story" from personal opinion was a very good episode. Not one of the show's best or of the season, but one of the better episodes of the second half of Season 5. Beginning from where the previous episode "Only You", the first of what was something of a two parter, left off, "An Untold Story" is a very good finale to a mostly well done if uneven fifth season, showing all the same strengths and faults of "Only You" (so there will be a little reiteration). Not one of the show's best season finales but it is still very satisfying and rounds the season off well.

There is parts that are a touch corny and don't always flow.

But really the only real fault with "An Untold Story", very like "Only You", is the character writing for Henry, which is all over the place and will admit to actually feeling frustrated by him and his actions rather than relating to them. His chemistry with Violet is sweet though.

However, there is lots of evidence of forward momentum and character development advancing, the characters true to personality and not distorted or going round in circles. One learns a lot and things are made clearer. It doesn't get over-stuffed or jumpy, making it not a difficult episode to follow.

What really makes "An Untold Story" is the character development and interaction. One really feels for Regina, whose grief doesn't veer into soap-opera territory or cliché and makes her a relatable and conflicted character. Her chemistry with Emma is not standard or cliched and comes over as genuine. Everything with Jekyll and Hyde only started in the previous episode and already it's very intriguing. Love the character exchanges throughout.

The way the Evil Queen is brought back couldn't have been better, with plenty of suspense and emotion. Gold still shows why he is one of the show's most well-developed characters, while the Dragon intrigues.

All the acting is strong, Jared Gilmore actually not doing too bad a job with what he is given. Lana Parrilla especially is splendid and makes Regina rootable in a way that's very moving. Robert Carlyle is similarly riveting, he has fun with Gold and has the right amount of charisma, gravitas and shadiness. Hank Harris and Sam Witwer play Jekyll and Hyde very well, especially Witwer whose Hyde shows here potential to be one of 'Once Upon a Time's' better villains of the latter seasons.

Furthermore, "An Untold Story" is a very handsomely mounted episode visually, the settings and costumes are both colourful and atmospheric, not too dark or garish and never cookie cutter. It is photographed beautifully too. The music is haunting, ethereal and cleverly used with a memorable theme tune.

Writing has the right balance of humour, pathos, mystery and intrigue mostly, with less soap and camp that has been seen in some of the Underworld arc. This aspect has come on a long way since when 'Once Upon a Time' first started, much more complexity and nuance, or at least at this point on the most part.

Summing up, very good. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Season 5 Recap and Review
Honesticedragon6925 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Possable SPOILER ALERT: Summary: We started the season with Emma becoming the Dark One nick name Dark Swan, and along the way we found out the Origins so to speak of the what I like to call The Dark Dagger or The Dark Ones Dagger and The First Dark One herself, the first half of the season five arc was riveting. Fast forward to the season half of the season arc they literally went to the Underworld to retrieve a team member that sacrificed themselves to defeat the villain(s) of the first arc. The second half of the season arc was I wouldn't say not as good I don't know how to explain it with out Spoiling anything, yes there are a lot of twists and turns, it's just you feel our Heros aren't Heros at all duo to the fact that they are not saving anything by proventing it from happening, even they are. it feels more like OK we are in the Underworld and we did our thing and now let's go home back to the real Storybrook. And now hare we are the season Finally oh and a far warning if you don't want any Spoilers you better stop reading NOW..... So with that said hare we go, I could relate to Ragin when she said that every Good that she does seems to have a price and every Bad that she does seems to end in something bad. Not only that she also said that there is a battle inside of her between Good and Bad and i call that Èverything has its Price'to barrow from Mr. Gold. I also like the fact that they mentioned that we all see our demonsé dark sides differently. And I do believe that to be true. The Dragon was right this world does have Magic we just don't see it, that is true, because it turned me into some one that doesn't under stand or care to under stand OUAT into a hug fan of OUAT it is also my fav shows on TV ever. Now I couldn't imagine a day that goes by that I don't think about OUAT. And so finally the cliffhanger is not as good as in Season 4 but still good. In the season 4 finally cliffhanger I was drooling for more and not only that these 4-5 months feels like an enternity. As for this season finally these 4-5 months feel long yes but not as nearly as long as an enterity unfortunately, it would be interesting to see where they go with the return of an old villain for first half of the season 6 arc.

Next Tale

Warning: Spoilers
Warning do not read unless seen episode.

I need to get something out first. This second plot line with Hades I thought was pretty good but had a lot of problems which held it back for me. From unnecessary subploting which slowing things down and did nothing for the plot line.

Tons of opportunities missed (along with the first plot line) like having more characters from Greek myth come into the picture, which I was looking forward to seeing and tees me off we didn't. The plot line also wasn't that exciting much like the first one because not much happens.

There are some plot holes as well let alone stupidity that could of been avoided, that seem to come from some characters like Emma whose made a few dumb decisions in the season, however with her I can forgive her for it because after what she's been though she wasn't 100 percent, at least she wasn't as bad as Belle.

OK, that's enough of my rant, lets get down to some of the good things in this two parter.

I really loved seeing Henry take action. This character for me is really getting better, I would love to see him have a more proactive role in things in the future. It really demonstrated how he is kinda elevating more to hero status. And personal I really was for his cause on getting rid of magic, granted I know that's extreme but I don't blame him. The death of Robin, Henry kinda lost another father to black magic but also seeing Rumple about to once again steel power and kill everyone, as well as the looming possibility Regina might turn to the dark side again pushes him over the edge. But Henry does have a valid point, so far there really has been more misuse than good use of magic.

Even loved a moment when Rumple was spouting some crap toward Henry on his actions taking magic away and Henry of course doesn't take his bull crap and stands up for himself and I thought yeah, good for you kid and if Henry didn't do what he did then Emma and Regina would be dead let alone most of the New York populace.

I really like his back and forth with Violet whom is a decent addition to the show, it's actually great seeing Henry having someone his own age to interact with. Hopefully they'll develop her and the relation with the two more in the next season.

I can't help but have a bit of this "Doctor Who" vibe with both of them. Henry almost comes of as a young version of that protagonist, just like "The Doctor" he doesn't use weapons but intellect and wits to win. His quill is sort of his sonic screw driver. Heck, even what he's wearing is similar to the forth Doctor's get up, with that scarf, coat; even what Violet wears looks like a bit like something companion Sarah Jane would wear. The only thing now that both Henry and Violet need are a Tardis. Though I have a feeling their going to get one in next season, as there is a twist to Viloet's character.

However what really makes the two parter is in it's standard setting for the next season as it has really broadened realm of the fantasy world as we discovered more "Once Upon a Time" record books. I thought this was awesome because it meant we would see more characters, ones we haven't touched upon yet.

I really like that new main villain Mr. Hyde. I know that's another wild card but in the original book there were fantasy elements as the formula Dr. Jeckall created did have some alchemist properties. But Mr. Hyde looked to be a solid villain as he was really menacing and what made him even more dangerous is not just his super strength but how he is armed with both his knowledge in both science and alchemy. In a way his the kind of villain you would see in a steam punk fantasy which is awesome, made me wonder if we'll see some of those elements in next season.

I can't help but think the next plot line for the sixth season there is going to be a "Captain America: Civil War" vibe to it as were going to probably see Hyde have his "Leagon of Doom" against the Storybroke party whom are pretty much the "Justice League". I personally don't mind since the super team sub genre in comics and movies is a big thing these days, their just popping up all the time these days from "King's Quest", "Future Quest", "Gold Key Allence", the list goes on. This was a story line that I personally I had in mind for a long time. It's going to be awesome seeing the new characters on the roster.

They of course had a clever way to bring the evil queen back, which kinda reminds me of how "Power Rangers" brought the evil Green Ranger back one more time. On one hand that little voice in me is saying "Yeah, the dark queen is back." But on the other hand I'm thinking "hmmmm?" I'm personally a little worried on how this subplot with the evil queen is going to balance out or mesh with the central plot line.

Overall this two part season finale was good, to me this was one of the only episodes that stand out and like from the season which sadly aren't many. But as for season 5 itself, it was decent but as a fan of the series, I personally think we can do better, and they better if they want to have a final season which I feel is something that should happen soon.

The war for the realms is about to begin.

Warning: Spoilers
Contains Spoilers . Wow this was really awesome.I don't understand way this episode is only 8.6.comon this should be at least 9.0+ I really like where the show is going, next season must be so awesome. I really like this new actors. Land of untold story's is awesome. Well I'm really interested in Eavil Queen i wonder what will she do. I think the new format for Once upon a times season 6 will be great(no split season in arcs). Well this season was weary interesting, i liked the Dark Swan arc but i wanted to see Dark Swan in more action using her dark powers..Seconed arc was nice to it actually was shocking Robind death, Hades was a big bad and i really liked that. I didn't like Doroty's romance with Ruby they should pair up Ruby and Mulan not Doraty! Can't wait for SEASON 6!

What.
christopherleedias27 April 2022
This was the least creative and laziest writing of the series to this point. I was willing to get on board with the Dr. Jekyll thing, but the speech where Henry asks a bunch of New Yorkers to throw quarters into a fountain to bring back magic? That was a low point for the series.

Idk, maybe it was "bring your kid to work" day when they wrote the script for this episode. I can't fathom why the ratings for this episode are as high as they are. It was awful.

Hoping things turn around next season.
