After Lucille Ball's spunky housewife Lucy signed off on the last episode of "I Love Lucy" but before Mary Tyler Moore did away with the nuclear family sitcom model with her own self-titled show, another actress was one of the faces of womanhood in comedy. Oscar-winning actress Donna Reed headlined "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1966, playing middle-class mother and housewife Donna Stone in the popular black-and-white series. Reed starred opposite Carl Betz, who played Donna's husband, pediatrician Dr. Alex Stone. In season 5, family friends Midge and Dave joined the fun, but for the most part, the show was all about the lighthearted hijinks of the Stone family.
Though "The Donna Reed Show" was popular upon release, it's now perhaps most often referenced as a pop cultural window into a time before second-wave feminism, when women were expected to spend their time cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing while men went to work.

Ernie Hudson, the 78-year-old actor who has appeared in all five of the “Ghostbusters” movies and several “Ghostbusters” video games, spoke with The Independent about the franchise in the lead-up to “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.”
The role of Winston Zeddmore was originally offered to Eddie Murphy, and when that didn’t happen, his character’s screen time was greatly reduced. As such, Hudson’s pay was much smaller than that of the other three Ghostbusters, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (the latter two also wrote the script). He also did not appear on any of the posters.
“It’s very tempting, sometimes, to blame anything that doesn’t work in your life on racism. But there are a lot of things that play into it. It’s not quite that simple,” he explained. “We can say it’s a racial thing, but I think if Eddie Murphy had played the role I played,...

The sitcom “Girls5eva” follows the attempted comeback of a fictional girl group that peaked in the early 2000s, now reunited as middle-aged women. But headed into its third season, it’s “Girls5eva,” not just Girls5eva, that’s trying to start anew. After two critically acclaimed, if evidently little-watched, seasons on Peacock, the show has been resurrected by Netflix, which has bankrolled a fresh batch of episodes and made the entire back catalog available to its massive audience of over 260 million global subscribers — many of whom will encounter “Girls5eva” for the first time as a Netflix original.

Valerie Bertinelli’s departure from “Kids Baking Championship” is not a cut-and-dry case of Food Network firing the “One Day at a Time” alum from her role as co-host and judge of the show. Rather, it’s the aftermath of the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned channel deciding not to renew Bertinelli’s larger exclusive deal with the network when it ended in 2022, sources tell Variety.
Bertinelli signed a multi-series deal with Food Network in 2018, which expired in 2021. The pact was extended for an additional year and came to an end in 2022, when the currently airing Season 12 of “Kids Baking Championship” was taped back to back with Season 11. Bertinelli has co-hosted and judged ‘Kids,” a spinoff of Food Network’s larger “Baking Championship” competition franchise that includes holiday and seasonal iterations, alongside Duff Goldman since it first debuted on Food Network in 2015.
“Her deal expired, they opted not to renew it.

New CW Entertainment president Brad Schwartz has one job: Make The CW profitable for the first time ever — and do it by 2025, as new parent company Nexstar promised Wall Street.
On Wednesday, the day his post was announced, Schwartz told IndieWire that he “hopes to beat” the deadline.
“It’s definitely not going to be easy,” said Schwartz, whose official start date is November 7. Already, he said, there are some pieces in place, including “a lot” of revenue from ad sales and digital. “We’re not starting from absolute scratch.”
Schwartz has made a career out of turnarounds, launches, and rebrands. There’s been seven to date, the most notable being the time he rebranded the TV Guide Network as Pop TV, which brought us “Schitt’s Creek” and “One Day at a Time.” We began our telephone conversation by asking Schwartz if The CW needs a new name.

Amazon Studios has picked up to series The Horror of Dolores Roach pilot based on the hit Gimlet podcast, starring One Day At A Time alumna Justina Machado in the title role. The project, in development at Amazon since 2020, hails from Blumhouse Television, which won the rights to adapt the podcast in 2019 in a competitive situation, Spotify’s Gimlet and GloNation Studios. The Horror of Dolores Roach will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The Horror of Dolores Roach originally was developed by podcast creator Aaron Mark as a one-woman play starring Daphne Rubin-Vega, who reprised her role in the podcast. It is a grotesque Sweeney Todd-inspired tale of eat or be eaten — a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism and survival of the fittest.

Let's face it, love and the holidays just go together. Why else would we have all these cheesy Christmas romance films? There's just something about winter nights and sparkling lights that screams "go cozy up with someone you love." But unfortunately, when looking at the narrative of romance and Christmas, there are going to be some problems. Think The Holiday or Love Actually, which feature largely (or entirely) white casts and a straight, Anglo definition of love. In films like these, we find men and women, alone in their individualism, trying to find someone to make a new, tiny nuclear family with (and often repeating tired gender dynamics along the way).
Thankfully, that's starting to change. This year, we saw not one but two made-for-tv Christmas movies staring Latina lovers - Lifetime's Holiday in Santa Fe and CBS's A Christmas Proposal. We also got more LGBTQ+ content, thanks in...

School’s out… forever. HBO Max has cancelled the Head of the Class reboot after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports.
The reboot, executive-produced by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso), Amy Pocha (Bad Teacher) and Seth Cohen (Undateable), starred Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time) as a teacher trying to wrangle a classroom full of teen geniuses. The supporting cast included Christa Miller (Cougar Town) as the school’s principal. The reboot was based on the 1986-91 ABC sitcom of the same name, and original star Robin Givens returned to reprise her role as Darlene.

How Sitting in Her Feelings Led Gloria Calderón Kellett to Create Her Second Dream Show, ‘With Love’
Before Gloria Calderón Kellett landed on developing “With Love,” a holiday rom-com, as the first title under her overall deal with Amazon Studios, she took six months to “sit in my feelings to figure out what was the new thing that I wanted to say,” the writer-producer-director recalls.
Calderón Kellett had spent the last few years on a roller coaster of emotions with her multicamera reboot of “One Day at a Time,” which first launched on Netflix in 2017, only to be canceled by the streamer after three seasons. Fledgling cabler Pop TV picked up the show for a fourth season, which ended up truncated after the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt on production, and that network canceled the show months later (and has since gotten out of the originals game altogether). For all that complicated business, though, she was still creatively fulfilled by the art she was making on the show.

After closing the book on her splendid revival of “One Day At a Time,” creator Gloria Calderón Kellett is back with another series focused on new hilarious family. “With Love” holds commonalities with “One Day,” predominately in that both are about an intergenerational Latino family, but the Amazon Prime Video series finds even richer and deeper avenues to explore.
Each episode takes place on a different holiday across one year in the lives of the Diaz clan. Lily and her brother Jorge are approaching relationships from opposite sides. Starting on Christmas Eve, Lily has broken up with her boyfriend (and then failed to get him back), while Jorge is embarking on a new romance with the level-headed Henry (Vincent Rodriguez III). As each holiday approaches, we see the pair embark on a fresh set of challenges that, coupled with other events their relatives are going through, help inform their emerging identities.

Any show juggling multiple relationship dynamics gives itself the gift of possibility and the challenge of balancing it all at once. While it gets to tell several stories instead of relying on just one, some characters can easily fall through the cracks, or else become far less compelling when weighed against the others. Such is the case for “With Love,” a new Amazon Prime Video rom-com series from Gloria Calderón Kellett (“One Day at a Time”) that shines bright in some narratives and falls disappointingly flat in others.
Over five episodes, each unfolding over the course of a different holiday, “With Love” follows four interlocking couples as they fall in, out of, and back in love. Connecting them all are members of the Diaz family, a sprawling but tightly knit group with a lot of love, and more than a few codependent dynamics. The season details almost a full year of their lives,...

Our age of reboots, revivals, and revisitations is beginning to take its toll. With every new announcement comes the ceremonial rolling of the eyes from critics — unless they happen to be a fan of the IP, in which case the news is greeted with frenzied excitement — and grumblings from fans. Not that either has stopped the slow march toward net zero on creativity.
But while many reboots are content to do nothing more than update the technology for a beloved property and cash in on its name recognition, some are interested in exploring and questioning what made the original iteration so resonant while addressing its earlier failings. The prime example is Pop TV’s dearly beloved “One Day at a Time,” which took the original’s premise (single mom and kids struggling with divorce) and applied it to a Latinx family. Suddenly, an entirely new world of stories opened up,...

It’s a happy 90th birthday to iconic actress Rita Moreno, celebrating today the renewal of interest in one of her most famous roles, that of Anita in the 1961 version of West Side Story (she’s also the widow Valentina in the 2021 update).
But lest we forget, Moreno is one of the few performers to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award. A Kennedy Center honoree, she has also won various lifetime achievement awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor.

“It doesn’t feel any different. On the face of it, nothing has changed,” Moreno said. “I’m older and deeply grateful for still being here. And inevitably, now there is concern...

There a few performers’ names who, when you hear them, sound synonymous with holiday-themed television. This year, Emeraude Toubia should one of them.
The former “Shadowhunters” star traded stunts and sci fi for cozy sweaters and the new relationship ups and downs of both Lifetime’s “Holiday in Santa Fe” and Amazon Prime Video’s “With Love.”
Working on two holiday-themed projects back-to-back may not have been an entirely intentional career move, but when Toubia learned the details of both — from her character to the teams behind the scenes — she knew she had to go for them. “Holiday in Santa Fe,” which airs Dec.10 on Lifetime, was written by comedian Cristela Alonzo, directed by Jody Margolin Hahn and produced by Mario Lopez, who also stars as Toubia’s on-screen love interest. Rita Moreno celebrates her 90th birthday and a new remake of ‘West Side Story’ from Steven Spielberg
Rita Moreno celebrates her 90th birthday on December 11. As luck would have it, that’s just one day after the Steven Spielberg remake of “West Side Story” opens nationwide. She won an Oscar as a supporting actress for the original almost 60 years ago and now returns in a new role and as executive producer.
Few performers have had such a varied and successful career as this dynamic triple-threat. The talented actress, singer and dancer is one of only 16 artists to achieve Egot status and one of 23 to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting and one of only two people (with Helen Hayes) to accomplish both.

Moreno was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico in 19831 and moved with her mother to New York City as a small child. By the age of 13, she had her first Broadway role and, before long, she and her mother headed to Hollywood.

Rita Moreno is one of a select few in Hollywood who have achieved the exceptionally rare honor of winning the Egot. But the legendary actress, who turns 90 on Dec. 11, isn’t done yet. After playing the scene-stealing Lydia on Netflix and Pop TV’s “One Day at a Time” for four seasons, she’s back on the big screen and could join the history books (again) in the very near future.
Moreno, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Anita in the 1961 film adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical “West Side Story,” could take home the same award for playing a different character in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the musical, which is set to hit theaters Dec. 10. Photo: ‘Head of the Class’ If you don’t remember the original ‘Head of the Class’, then that’s okay. ‘Head of the Class’, first premiering in 1986, was a teen sitcom about a ragtag group of gifted students and their unconventional teacher (Howard Hesseman). The show is remembered for being a vehicle for a lot of rising stars, such as Robin Givens and Dan Schneider. ‘Head of the Class’ was never really as popular as other teen sitcoms of the time, like ‘Saved by the Bell’ or ‘Boy Meets World’, thus it hasn’t really made a lasting impression. With the reboot of ‘Head of the Class’, starring Isabella Gomez of the ‘One Day at a Time’ reboot, it seems as though it might have a similar legacy as the original. The new ‘Head of the Class’, like the original, is a fun vehicle for young stars, but is ultimately...

The singer, who has become incredibly successful as a singer and merchandizer, will be paired with a female professional dancer on the upcoming season. Olympian gymnast Suni Lee, also 18, will become a contestant this year.
“It’s really special that not only now do I get to share with the world that you get to love who you want to love, but also you get a dance with whom you want to dance,” Siwa said. “There’s a lot of barriers that we’re going to have to break through — who leads, how do you dress, what shoes do you wear? Ilana Pena made a show in a pandemic. Not just a show, but a show featuring a good number of children. In our current landscape, the combination sounds like a recipe for disaster, but the gamble has paid off with another season of the charming family comedy “Diary of a Future President.” The Disney+ series has made some changes in Season 2, most notably transitioning the grown Elena Canero-Reed (Gina Rodriguez) away from the White House and more into becoming the young Elena’s (Tess Romero) inner voice.
The decision, which could seem like an attempt to get away from the politics of an already fraught year, actually crafts a different narrative Pena and crew hope will inspire children. “This isn’t a show about a president; it’s a show about a teenage girl,” Pena said during an interview with IndieWire. “So how do we break into her world instead of the other way around?...

TV writers are rallying behind their writers room assistants’ calls for a “living wage” as part of the IATSE’s negotiations for a new film and television contract, which resume July 6.
Under the Ia’s contract, the minimum pay for writers’ assistants is only $16 an hour, while script coordinators, who report directly to their showrunners or head writers, are paid as little as $17.64 an hour. Many work for these barely livable wages in the hope of getting a shot at a writing assignment.
Writers have been tweeting their support for their assistants using the hashtags #IASolidarity, #PayUpHollywood and #IALivingWage.
“Writer’s Assistants & Script Coordinators are under-sung and underpaid superstars of every TV production; they deserve to be paid a living wage by every studio, no exceptions,” tweeted Craig Thomas, co-creator/executive producer of How I Met Your Mother and executive producer of the upcoming How I Met Your Father.

Hulu has released the first trailer for the second season of its heartwarming LGBTQ teen series “Love, Victor.” Based on the “Love, Simon” YA book and movie franchise, the first season of “Love, Victor” expanded on the concept of a closeted gay teenager who works out his feelings about coming out through writing letters. (Hence the title.) Where “Love, Simon” wrote letters to a paramour, “Love, Victor” puts its leading man (cutie pie Michael Cimino) in touch with the older Simon, who acts as a kind of gay older brother/mentor to Victor.
The first season set up this dynamic, introduced a slew of other amusing characters in Victor’s orbit, and also explored cultural nuances of LGBTQ acceptance through Victor’s close-knit Latinx family. Season 1 left off with Victor’s impending coming out to his traditional parents, and the Season 2 trailer picks up at the cliffhanger of that final scene.

Rita Moreno has been breaking the glass ceiling in Hollywood since she arrived in 1950. Now, audiences are going to see and hear about everything in her new documentary “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For it.”
Moreno is known to most audiences for being just one of four Latinos to ever win an Academy Award and, at last count, the only Latina to win Best Actress. But Moreno is far more than just the role of Anita in “West Side Story.” As the documentary lays out, she suffered sexual harassment and abuse, as well as racism in the industry.
The film will also chart Moreno’s life in Puerto Rico, as well as her relationships and transition into becoming a celebrated television star and Egot winner.
Alongside that, her relationship with actor Marlon Brando brought her all manner of emotional traumas it took years for her to overcome.
