Better Than Average... For What That's Worth
gavin69425 August 2016
Louise (Ellen Dorrit Petersen) and Kasper (Peter Christoffersen) want to become parents but Louise is unable to have children. She seals a pact with her Romanian maid, Elena (Cosmina Stratan), to bear Louise's child, but things don't turn out as they planned.

What sort of feeling or anticipation do we get when we approach "Shelley"? At first, the name evokes thoughts of Frankenstein's monster, but we quickly see this might not be the best parallel. The plot is much closer to a modern retelling of "Rosemary's Baby". Not that we needed one, but the concept of "natal horror" can always make room for one more.

The dynamics of this film are noticeably different from "Rosemary". In that film, the threat was always external. Mia Farrow was terrified of her neighbors, her doctor, and sometimes even her husband as she continually felt boxed in. With "Shelley", it's almost as though things have been reversed. The threat now comes from within (the child itself) and we see events not just from the mother's perspective, but also from the outsiders (the "other" parents).

The idea is good, and they must be applauded for casting an actual Romanian in the role of a Romanian maid. This is sort of counter-acted by having Danish people speaking English, however. I presume this was done to boost the chances of international screenings and sales, but it seems inauthentic. This is probably a nitpick, but in this regard I have to be a purist.

The bigger question remains: Why does the couple live in the woods without electricity? The answer, of course, is this offers a great setting for a horror film. But it is not adequately explained by the characters. You might think an employee would ask why there's no power, but it never seems to occur to anyone. Are they Luddites? Is this a religious thing? Maybe a little mystery is good, but it seems silly to avoid the issue altogether.

Early reviews seem to be very divergent and often mixed. Rotten Tomatoes has the film at an impressive 100%, while IMDb gives the movie only 5.7/10, which is nothing to be proud of. It's too early to rely on either metric, so let's look at more concrete examples. Noel Murray walks that middle line, saying the film "becomes frustratingly vague in the middle" but ends up giving it a passing grade anyway. Neil Genzlinger feels similar, saying the film takes "a minimalist approach that is both intriguing and somewhat unsatisfying… Maybe expecting a horror film to have a point is expecting too much." He clearly wants to like the film but cannot fully commit to it. Alissa Simon is even less impressed, agreeing that the film is "unsatisfying", and also volunteering "underdeveloped" and "ludicrous".

For my money, the film is a decent horror film in its own right and will probably be popular when it hits Netflix or wherever it ends up. But it is neither one of the best on the festival circuit nor one of the best horror films of 2016. In the glut of movies coming out year after year, this is still better than average, but the average seems to be on a decline… so it doesn't take too much to get a C when we're grading on a curve.

"Shelley" debuted in February 2016 in Berlin, and has been making the festival rounds. Most recently it screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July. No rest for the wicked, however. Director Ali Abbasi is said to be already at work on "The Holy Spider," a film about Saeed Hanaei, an infamous Iranian serial killer. (Other sources have him directing "Border", which may be the same film under a different title.)

Child-less
kosmasp18 May 2017
So it's a Horror movie and someone gets another person to carry their child for them. There could never go anything wrong now could there? Apart from the obvious and what we would expect (suspense, questions and themes of terror or at least Horror), this has some awkward acting in it. And while it may enhance the viewing experience for some, it may also feel wrong for a lot of others.

So buckle up and take this trip, try to stay with it and figure out what is going on. It won't be too clear cut from the beginning and there is enough suspense to go around. It's a decent stab (excuse the pun) to deliver on the premise the movie has. If you like the Genre you probably will like this too

Unfathomable
begob16 August 2016
A barren wife engages a maid in her remote home, before propositioning the girl with money to become a surrogate mother. The plan works ... until the baby kicks in.

Direction and editing are very good, setting the scene at a fair pace in a claustrophobic world with only three characters. Particularly good early on is the relationship between the women, which gives a genuine feel of them getting to know each other and enjoying their company. Lovely acting, and I got a good chuckle when the maid stuck her tongue out.

The sense of unease is created with subtle music, and the photography makes use of well lit landscapes and close ups. But why are we uneasy? I kept guessing where the threat was coming from, but sadly it comes from nowhere, so I began losing patience about halfway through. There were a couple of interesting efforts to deliver the evil eye from the baby, but it's another case for Inspector Babadook - horror methods used to give a frisson to personal difficulties that might be psychological, might be spiritual.

Problems with the story. The maid's background is interesting - educated but poor immigrant ground up by the West's wealth machine, but that doesn't inform her character, even though she's the plaything of unaccountably wealthy hippies. No attention paid to the fact she was effectively lured in with lies - when the proposition was made I was thinking, Uh oh. Apparently I was wrong. So where did we come from, and where did we end up? I dunno. Even the shaman departed in a state of confusion.

This is a Danish production, but mostly in English in the first part, so no need for subtitles until about 40 mins. And the first time I've seen fisting in a drama - shouldn't he have had it torn off at the wrist?

Overall, unfathomable because it lacks depth.

Chilling and effective. A slow-motion nightmare.
Red_Identity5 August 2016
This is the kind of slow-burn horror film that really, truly gets under your skin. the type of horror film that America doesn't make (although the last two years that has been changing, with flicks like The Babadook, It Follows, and The Witch). This won't be for every horror fan, especially those that want more craziness or loud jump scares. Instead, what the film does is establish its characters very well and from then on it lurks and creeps you out until you become more and more terrified by what's happening on screen. It's exactly the type of film that really lingers on the mind and I really hope more people seek it out.

DIsturbing, but incredibly slow paced.
manuelasaez7 August 2016
Like watching a Tarantula molt, this film is incredibly fascinating, disturbing and effective. But, man, is it slow! Everything happens at a snails pace, and regardless of how thought provoking the events are, it does not excuse the pace of this supposed "horror" film. I am all for a slow-burn, in fact, I prefer them to teenage jump scares and other sophomoric tactics. But this movie literally made me want to watch it at 2X the speed, just so that people would pick up the f-ing pace. You know how there are movies that would have been effective if the creative teams knew how to just get to the good parts and edit themselves accordingly? This is one of those films. Had they been more overt with the horror elements, and made things flow just a bit faster, this would have been a worthy addition to the "baby horror" sub-genre. As it stands, it plods along, thinking it is being suspenseful, but in reality, it's just not getting there fast enough. Not recommended, as I am unsure that even the most ardent "slow-burn" fan will appreciate the pace of this film. That being said, the acting is superb, and the cinematography is top-notch.

The new and improved Rosemary's Baby
cjs654711 December 2016
A subtle horror film not without its moments of suspense and utter creepiness. We follow Elena (accountant turned housekeeper, for some reason) who gets close to her employers (a couple who live in an isolated house without modern amenities, for some reason). She wants to save money quickly to go back to her son and so agrees to be surrogate mother for their baby.

The film was too slow for some, so if you need quick doses of jumpscares and shock tactics, this isn't one for you. However, I found the departure from mainstream action horror and script to be very refreshing. I was not bored at any point in the movie, because it does an excellent job of building character and relationships in the first half hour. If anything, I was impatient to see where it was all leading, because the story has some unpredictable turn of events.

Not a lot was answered by the open ending, so you need to pay attention to little details throughout the film, and theories will inevitably run amok with plenty of evidence for more than one horror scenarios. Also, it is always a good sign when you can sympathize will ALL of the characters (which are few to be sure, but very well played).

It is the most convincing horror movie to come out in a while, and I recommend it to anyone who can get roped into a horror story without a sense of urgency.

Slow burning Danish horror
Leofwine_draca27 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
SHELLEY is a Danish 'evil baby' film so obtuse as to be a really frustrating viewing experience. It's a low budget and exceptionally long winded story, in which very little actually happens in the way of action or incident throughout the lengthy story. Instead this is a film all about mood and creepy notes on the soundtrack; it's all hints and shadows and very little of anything actually concrete.

I found it a slog to sit through, if I'm honest. The writers fail to make any of the characters interesting or likable so the story just sort of washes over you rather than involving you. There are a few effective horror moments but these really are few and far between. The film's almost complete refusal to offer answers or definitive plot events is very frustrating, especially at the non-ending. If you want an 'evil baby' film then there are plenty of better ones out there, even the clichéd American offerings.

Eerie, dark, and effective
maryann_blair9 August 2016
Granted this film is a slow burn but the cinematography, dark atmosphere, acting, and score was top notch. Should watch when you are more relaxed and patient cause when you get there you will found it was worth the wait. I am a huge horror fan and I am sick and tired of the basic 90 min horror films that throw all the things at you in the first frame but with this director you have to have patience to fully understand the movie. There was 3 scenes I had to rewind that I missed the first time of viewing this movie. I agree with the thought of Rosemary's Baby by the way of David Lynch and I think it deserves a view. This is a solid horror film.

Slow and Tedious
barry-steers30 December 2016
Talk about slow paced! This movie just went on and on and on with no real progression. It was an hour and a half movie that could have easily been squeezed into 30 minutes with the needless scenes and repetitiveness taken out. The premise was good but due to a lack of a good script, editing and direction the film just meandered on with no real climax, pay off or closure. As it abruptly ended you thought "Is that it?". You could have forgiven the director if there was a great finale after the incredibly slow build up but it just whimpered out after 90 minutes of hoping that something great was going to happen. Greatly disappointing. You could see the director has seen the Omen from the numerous plagiarized snippets he randomly inserted (all the cheap ones that don't involve CGI)but it was just a very, very poor imitation to a movie that did this infinitely better. This was no horror and barely a thriller.Unfortunately the director thought broody scenes of landscapes made up for actual content.Sorry but this movie was a complete dud.

Well made - not for everyone
RussHog18 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Look - I cannot imagine what it takes for a group of dedicated professionals to film a horror movie like Shelley. The countless time spent to get the shots right. The lights. Makeup. Actors. For all of the effort taken to make a movie look gorgeous and haunting - one might consider a script that takes less risks to alienate the audience with artistic decisions and instead uses a story with more clarity and a stronger reversal of expectation.

This movie is really well made - the story begins with a Romanian girl who goes to live with her boss and his wife in the woods - but they have no electricity. This seems strange - and soon it gets even more strange when our young heroine agrees to be a surrogate mother for the couple.

She becomes pregnant and soon there are signs of darkness - eerie dreams and a visit from a black hound. Then her body begins to decay as the life inside of her grows. This gets worse and more painful to experience for her and for the audience as well.

Then - the film gets very strange and pretty scary but I honestly admit I had a hard time following the story.

I believe the Romanian girl dies giving birth? Or - she goes missing? Or - she stays in the house but is out of sight? The couple begin to raise the child but soon they too have dark experiences and seem to be going down the same path as the surrogate mother. There is a final moment that sheds some profound insight into intimacy and childbirth that is pretty chilling - but it is also very confusing and full of symbolism that may have passed me by.

Our conclusion is a final shot - and I am not sure what I saw - but I think the young Romanian girl who served as the surrogate mother looms in the background and observes the current mom as she holds the baby - and the baby seems to enjoy the fact it's birth is death itself. I think it's an evil demon - or Satan - or something - but honestly I dunno.

I have watched a lot of horror movies and I have seen this type of end before - ambiguous and puzzling, perhaps to a fault. Yet I admit that as a man I might need to understand the pain of giving birth and the psychological horror of what could go wrong that all pregnant woman - may experience.

This movie is 100% worth it if you love horror and want to watch a well made film. It is intelligent and controversial and artistic - and some of the creative choices are confusing.

I look forward to another film by this filmmaker.

Don't lose your time. This crap doesn't even have a plot.
etsenberg13 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I trusted to the good reviews above, and it was a big mistake. This movie is not just slow-paced and boring - it just ends with no explanation of what was happening. The only thing you can guess - "probably there is some evil in this baby", but you guessed it from the very beginning and didn't need 1.5 hour for that. What kind of evil? Why? What's going to happen next? Did the husband die and appear in the house as a ghost, or did he just return home? No answers. The whole "plot" can be told in several phrases. A rather old woman never could carry a baby, so she and her husband ask their Rumanian worker Elena to be a surrogate mother. Elena agrees, but as her pregnancy progresses, she gets health problems and feels disgust to the baby, eventually trying to kill the girl in her womb. The doctors save the baby; Elena disappears from the plot. Then the husband begins to feel the similar disgust (for no reason) and tries to move the baby away from the house, but his wife prevents it (maybe killing him or maybe not) and returns home with the baby. Her husband is shown behind her. The end. There is NOTHING else in the whole movie, literally NOTHING.

A film with climax.
caiokaka12 August 2016
When I started watching this film had the idea that it would be more horror/Terror turned to psychological than to surprise, shock , it was like that , which in my view he managed to stand out in the genre , as well as The witch.

The plot involved me from the middle to the end , the plot made me really the climax with his photography and lighting, which incidentally, are noteworthy. The performances are also favorable , especially bathtub scene . The soundtrack is simple (no exuberant moments ) leaving most of the environment and sound that, at least in this film is good, it was more that made me enter the atmosphere . Note eight because of good photography , lighting and acting.

good suspense
payamcommunication3 October 2016
The plot of the movie is simple but it develops fairly astonishingly. The dark atmosphere starts to appear from the beginning of the movie and turns into a not releasing stress in the middle. The suspend builds up all the way close to the ending which is the strength of this movie.

The movie has three distinguishing features:

The English language has made it possible to be understandable by many audiences and the writer has used the excuse of a foreign maid in the house for English language.

I was sick of the ghosts of many recent horror movies which had their mouths open too wide and loud. This movie was a cool breeze away from the failed horrors. The director has done an amazing job to keep up the suspense with almost no special computer effect or crawling long hair lady.

The performances of the actors were really satisfying. Except for the two women, the others were not talking that much which was good. The two women (Elena and Louis) were pretty good and amazing at some scenes.

All by all, a great movie which I re-watch Although I would like it more if it was longer and it had more development at the ending.

Slow and pointless
orionhi4 August 2021
If a movie has to leave this many unanswered questions I'm inclined to think they didn't know what their own movie was about. It's very slow and boring and the end is nonsense. If I need to fill in this many blanks to explain what happened then I don't even need the movie. I'll imagine the entire thing. That way it will make sense.

It's pretty much a silent-era Rosemary's Baby
Otkon20 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
But while you cared about Mia Farrow, you will be hoping the demon spawn of this clunker is born prematurely and eats the Valium-popping cast. It's that foreign, art house and joyless.

I think there are maybe four lines of dialogue in the whole movie that are meaningful to the "plot". The rest of the drama is a series of thoroughly long, quiet and pretentious dramatic pauses of the typical and tiresome Scandinavian cinematic variety.

Think about it this way: the most "likable" character is the bratty little kid who punches the annoying pregnant girl in the stomach.

Leaves a lot up to viewer interpretation.

Fantasia 2016: 'SHELLEY': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

Another entry in this year's 'Fantasia International Film Festival', is this psychological thriller flick; about a Danish couple, that live together in an isolated villa (in the forest), that really wants to have a child (but can't). The wife makes a pact with their Romanian maid, for the maid to be the child's surrogate mother; but something sinister begins affecting the pregnancy, and everyone around it. The film was directed by first time feature filmmaker Ali Abbasi, and it was written by Abbasi and Maren Louise Kaehne. The movie stars Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Cosmina Stratan and Peter Christoffersen. It's a well made, and haunting movie.

Louise (Petersen) and Kasper (Christoffersen) live in a remote villa, in the middle of the woods, away from technology and all modern ways of life. They hire a Romanian maid, named Elena (Stratan); and Louise and Elena quickly become close. Louise explains, to Elena, that she really wants to have a child, but can't. She then offers to give the maid a lot of money, to carry a child for her. Elena reluctantly agrees to the arrangement, but it soon becomes evident that the pregnancy is not normal; and something very dark (and unnatural) has possessed the baby growing inside of her.

The movie is really nicely directed; the mood and atmosphere, that the director creates, are perfectly creepy and disturbing. The performances are all excellent, as well, especially the two female leads; and the characters are all likable and relatable. The film is effectively scary; without a true villain, or clichéd 'jump scares' and gimmicks! With all of that said, I was still hoping for more from the movie's ending. It's definitely a psychological thriller, that leaves a lot up to viewer interpretation.

A very interesting horror film which mostly leans on building an atmosphere of dread.
Panos2427 August 2016
A very interesting horror film which mostly leans on building an atmosphere of dread. It makes it successfully thanks to Ali Abassi's neat direction, the exciting photography (very good work with the lighting) and the well organized editing (pay attention to the rotation of the scenes which are taking place inside the house and the shots of the environment outside of it). The story of Shelley isn't very original but is told through a very elliptical narration. This will begrudge many viewers with limited patience since most of the answers the movie puts are not answered clearly. A daring way to narrate which i appreciated. 7/10

ending explained
brautigan-126-78425011 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'll keep it short and sweet, boneheads: the baby didn't live. The scene in the hospital was a delusion. The "eye change" sequence we see with the shaman is the key clue: it's the exact moment he realizes he's looking at a dead baby. Emma's dead body is hanging from a rope as a sort of punishment. There was nothing supernatural in the entire movie. Emma went nuts, that's all. Now enjoy the movie again, you're welcome.

A complete waste of time
eclipticwings9 September 2020
This isn't some deep , creative, unique slow burn.

It's really not. I don't know what the people rating this anything above a 4 are smoking, but I want to know because this was an absolute waste of time. It was beautifully shot, the acting was wonderful, this was nothing more than a lifetime drama movie with a sprinkle of 'spooky' for anyone that can't stomach movies like "Misery" (Which was still infinitely better than this or "The Village"

Slow-paced, but well-made
girlshopsalone16 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Although this movie fell under "Thriller" on Netflix, it is more of a horror movie. I don't care for horror because they are not made-well and always seem to be the juvenile, gratuitous-skin, slasher-kind . This movie, on the other hand, I really liked. It is the kind of movie that actually scared me. It is slow, but it builds-up and is well-acted. Could have done without the vaginal scene, but loved the build-up on the scare factor. People are posting that there is no plot and they didn't understand it. Leo put a spell on Elena, who in turn transferred to the baby and in turn transferred to the father-That's it. Just enjoy the movie!

The obsession of motherhood
borgolarici3 May 2020
Almost everyone compares this movie to Rosemary's baby but I don't think it's right. Imho this movie isn't about demonic children but it's a metaphor for the obsession of motherhood (could be applied to fatherhood too tbh).

There are people who are incredibly determined to have a child in spite of the most adverse conditions: phisical, social and emotional. They just want their baby no matter what, even if this mean force or trap the other parent. Imho this is what the movie is about.

amichnea6 August 2016
Oh God where can I start, awful European horror just like the many others they keep churning out. Reading the other reviews I honestly expected something decent however I was completely disappointed, just over one hour and a half of my life I will NEVER get back.

The only thing I can say about this film is that it was creepy. Everything else was boooooooooooring, too many things left unexplained, when the credits pop up you cannot help it but feel completely unsatisfied.

Left to watcher's interpretation my backside, all I can say is that the damn eggs were past the expiration date, bad eggs or everyone in the movie drank the wrong coolie.

Please avoid.

To Thrill Or Not To Thrill
klooney8825 August 2016
I am giving this a 4 because of the ending. I don't give spoilers, but I just didn't like the ending! I think the overall plot had a great potential, and yes, it has a plot where other people said there wasn't. If I would have realized that the closed caption (subtitles) worked for the foreign languages spoke in this movie existed when you chose that, it probably would have earned 5 stars. Some people say this it's slow moving, and yes, it definitely is, however, I feel it set the picture for the setting. The hired maid/housekeeper seems quite normal, and so do the hiring couple. The description of the movie; however, it not accurate, nor is it a thriller or a horror film. My advise - Be ready for a slow moving movie and turn on the CC!
