Three stars for comedic value
sofiatysse18 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The acting is horrendous, the writing is bad, the sound editing is bad, the movie is bad.

I gave it three stars because of the laughing fit I had when the dad falls on his knife and the nose gets cut off and yeets itself into the right spot for the ritual to complete.

Strange

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was just, so bad honestly. All the props from the bodies were obviously fake, and even the corpse itself for one of the bodies looked a spirit Halloween prop. The acting isn't that great either, and the sounds are just.. bad.

Story is okay.

A very slow paced and monotone horror movie...
paul_haakonsen18 December 2018
I was lured in by a rather interesting movie cover, which turned out to oversell the movie by miles. The movie turned out to be nowhere near as interesting as the cover made it look like.

The storyline in the movie was adequate, albeit not interesting mind you. There were parts of the storyline and script that actually were quite adequate, but they were overshadowed by the mediocrity of the rest of the movie, which ranged from the special effects, the acting, the majority of the script and storyline and the entire premise of the movie.

The characters in the movie were fairly mundane and didn't really have much of depth or character development to them. In fact, some of them could actually have been replaced by cardboard cutouts.

There was nothing scary about "Family Possessions", unless you calculate the lack of a proper horror storyline into the equation. And almost nothing of any interest happened throughout the entire course of the movie. It was very monotone and slow paced.

As for the special effects, well let's just say you shouldn't get your hopes up. The was very little special effects in the movie. And the few times that you did see the dead and rotting lady, it was just laughable to look at. But the scene where you see a girl with her jaw mangled and tongue cut out that just tops it in terms of being fake to look at.

"Family Possessions" had me asleep twice throughout the course. But I woke up both times and continued to watch the movie, in the fading hope that the movie would pick up itself and become better. It didn't...

Worst scream editing ever
greyfith28 February 2019
Mediocre B movie. The sound editor needs to be slapped upside the head though. The right-into-the-mic screams were stupidly unnecessary. Seriously, the rest of the movie is normal volume, acceptable volumes, but hey, when we have a character scream, let's turn it up to 11 and turn on the reverb. Ridiculous.

Oh, and dead granny? LOL. I think they bought that prop at a discount Halloween outlet.

So bad! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
CuttingEdgeReviews7 February 2018
Boring, tedius "ghost" story with unlikeable characters, amateur actors, and an uninspired plot about a deceased "witch" grandmother and her "haunted house." Mark Patton and the wonderful Felissa Rose have glorified cameos, but there is not one scary scene. Not one!!

Don't bother. Skip it. Watch any of the Conjuring movies, Insidious movies. Light's Out, Mama, or Paranormal Activity.

Really bad

I support indie movies, but this one is a sinker. If you enjoy wooden acting and exposition and incoherent crap, go check it out.

Not horror or scary

Warning: Spoilers
This was a decent movie, could've been better. When you think it's obvious who may be doing the sacrifices towards the end, there's two twists, not what I was expecting which shows the writer has potential to make better movies in the future. The best part about the movie was "Dees Nuts." Once you watch you'll get it.

I thought it was great
belladonnax22 February 2019
It was creepy with a good number of jump scares, some dread, and some humor. I thought the ending had a nice twist to it. The acting by some was a bit wooden at times but not so much so that I'd deduct a star. There were some good secondary characters that added to the movie. Give it a chance.

Can't keep me here forever
nogodnomasters8 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Rachel Dunn (Leah Wiseman) inherits a home from her grandmother as her dad (Jason Vail) is snubbed in the will. It takes a while before the secret of the grandmother and the Greenville Historical House is revealed. (Historical plaque on home.) The secret is told to us by the oddball Maggie (Erika Edwards) a Luna Lovegood clone with "buggy eyes."

The film has a minor twist, nothing spectacular. I thought Maggie was going to use the spell book for herself, but alas that was not the case. The production was a bit long, taking time to develop plot and characters as the main action happens about 80 minutes into the feature. The special effects, especially the head of Elizabeth Mears, looked bad with huge fake looking eyes.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity

Purposely retro?
ddschneider7227 August 2021
I think it had an 80s TV movie or "Tales from the Darkside" vibe. The look, the acting, the effects. It wasn't great but it held my interest.

Slow burn and would have benefited from some editing.

Not as bad as everyone on here says!!!
patorange16 July 2022
It's a b-movie style movie. It kinda reminded me of the Goosebumps tv show. I was a little disappointed that Felissa Rose wasn't in it more but I was surprised about how good the movie was.

Camera work is pretty good, the story makes sense, the movie makes the story make sense, it's nicely paced, no idea is shoved down your throat, and it plays on horror stereotypes very well; again not shoved down your throat.

The editing's pretty good too. It feels like a good student film (not to put it down)

But give it a try!!

Great oopportunity for a classic horror that flops at the end
expostfacto-8510012 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Family possessions was surprisingly excellent for 90% of the movie, It is delicate creepy horror and though it borrows some cliches it has very original storlinre, the problem is the end makes no sense and collapses what would have been a wonderful film. It also leaves a massive loose end, where and how is the grandmother in the story, she is central to the film but makes almost no contribution.

the end supposedly was meant to be a twist with the father but that goes horribly astray, a man just suddenly does not turn into a mass murder plus at the beginning of the movie the lawyer clearly says if the daughter dies the house and money goes to charity so the father would have gained nothing. its a massive whole in the plot.

i have tried not to give away names and direct details but its worth watching.........

Great new take on the haunted house film!
Crimsonprod5 February 2018
Very cool throw back to the paranormal/haunted house film. Has a great new cast of actor but also horror veterans Mark Patton from Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and Felissa Rose from Sleepaway Camp. Totally recommend this movie!

A good movie, seen a lot worse
scotsdavy24 December 2018
Bit slow as these haunted houses ones usually are, but not too bad. Seen a lot worse in my time.
