There is a moment forty minutes into Joe Wright’s Cyrano where everything kicks up a notch. As a military regiment practices their swordcraft on a stunning pier in Sicily the titular Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage) crafts an agreement with new recruit Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). He will write beautiful poetry as correspondence to Roxanne (Haley Bennett) from Christian—who lacks the words—thereby espousing his own love for the same woman. “I will make you eloquent while you make me handsome,” Cyrano explains, convinced they do not live in a world wherein someone like him could be with someone like her. Christian breaks into song and the camera runs away, darting through the regiment training on the pier. Soon enough we cut above the action, taking in the pier and the seas that surround it. The sequence is exhilarating and the film’s pace does not slow from there.

On the occasion of its 15th investment session, the screen.brussels fund is injecting 1.1 million euros into the production of 13 majority Belgian projects. Among the various feature films supported, we find Chienne de vie, the new film by Xavier Seron who we last saw several years ago, wielding his singular, successful first feature Death by Death. Chiennes de vie consists of three overlapping dog stories which paint a humorous portrait of human beings, with their doubts, their dreams, their loneliness and their search for love. The project has been selected to receive support in the form of a lightweight production grant accorded by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation Film and Audiovisual Centre and is produced by Hélicotronc. screen.brussels is also lending aid to Temps Mort by Eve Duchemin, who is signing her...

Exclusive: Japanese studio and international sales agent pairing up for new sci-fi.
Japanese studio Nikkatsu is partnering with Wild Bunch to handle international sales on the next film from leading Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
The as-yet-untitled project is a sci-fi suspense film produced by Nikkatsu. The produers are keeping details under wraps but say the project is in post-production and based on an unspecified play.
Nikkatsu is handling Asian sales, with Wild Bunch handling all other international territories.
“This is my first film adapted from a theatre play,” said Kurosawa. “I was conflicted about tackling the marriage of satire, humour and sci-fi elements unique to the original work. But after overcoming the difficulties, I feel the different elements will be balanced.”
The film is executive produced by Nikkatsu’s Yuji Ishida, whose credits include Unforgiven, Confessions and Memories Of Matsuko. Kurosawa’s recent films include Creepy, which premiered at Berlin this year, and Daguerrotype...

Japan’s Nikkatsu Corporation has taken international sales rights on omnibus romantic drama Madly, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival in April.
Comprised of six stories, all of which focus on the complications of modern love, the film features behind-the-camera stints from talent including Gael García Bernal, Sion Sono, Sebastián Silva, Mia Wasikowska, Anurag Kashyap, and Natasha Khan, all of whom directed one of the 15-minute vignettes.
Following its premiere in Tribeca, where star Radhika Apte picked up the festival’s best actress award, the film had a subsequent berth at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August.
The feature was produced by Eric Mahoney and executively produced by Nusrat Durrani.
Durrani commented: “Madly is a thrilling take on a universal subject and its six scintillating films tackle bold themes that represent a global state-of-the-union of love. We are happy to have Nikkatsu represent the film...

It was reported several months ago that Us horror specialist Blumhouse Productions was branching out into local language productions. The first of these partnerships to be announced is with Phantom Films in India, the director's production house founded by Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur), Vikramarditya Motwane (Lootera), Madhu Mantena, and Vikas Bahl. Three films will be made under this partnership between Blumhouse, Ivanhoe, and Phantom and the talent involved is definitely worthy of notice. As reported by Screen Daily, the three films will feature some of India's hottest up and coming talent. First up is a horror picture called Ghoul, set to star Radhika Apte (Madly, Parched), the film will be directed by Patrick Graham, and is described as a story about "a prisoner who...

Indian actress Radhika Apte has been all over the place as of late. From her head-turning performances in films like Parched to her critically acclaimed and award winning role in international omnibus Madly (directed in part by Anurag Kashyap), she is easily one of the leading lights of Indian cinema poised to break through. Among her upcoming projects is writer/director Pawan Kirpalani's new thriller, Phobia, in which the fearless actress plays an agorophobic woman who is besieged in her apartment. Kirpalani is best known for directing one of India's first found footage horror films, 2011's Ragini Mms. He also directed the 2014 film Darr @ the Mall, another horror picture that is currently available at least on Us Netflix. This marks his first thriller, though...

Readers may recall around April last week last year, the whole of Bollywood and the media were shocked when they saw a video clip of the extremely talented Radhika Apte showing her off private parts. The clip was a scene from a movie that Radhika had shot for. The best part about the whole episode was that, neither the film's director Anurag Kashyap nor Radhika Apte accepted that they had shot the nude scene for a movie but condemned the circulation of the video clip. The good news is that, Radhika Apte has just bagged the Best Actress Award in the International Narrative Feature Film category at the Tribeca Film Festival for her international project Madly, the very film from this video clip was taken. She won the award for the Clean Shaven segment, which was directed by Anurag Kashyap and also featured actors like Adarsh Gourav and Satyadeep Misra.

One of the final films that I got to see last week at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival was also ironically the best of the bunch. That film was Dean, the cinematic writing and directorial debut of actor/comedian Demetri Martin. Not only was it absolutely fantastic, it was also declared an award winner at the festival, taking home the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature. That’s a big feather in this one’s cap as it begins to plan for a release in theaters, presumably later on this year. I know I can’t wait for you to see it, though I’ll have more on it later. For the moment, this will also be a piece highlighting all of the award winners, so let’s do that now! Quickly though, a bit on the film itself. As mentioned, Martin writes, directs, and stars in this dramedy about grief.

Team Experience is at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here's Manuel on Madly.
Anthology films are always, by definition, a mixed bag. This omnibus collection, which features short films by Gael García Bernal, Sebastián Silva, and Natasha Khan among others, is concerned with “Love.” Each short tackles this loaded emotion in decidedly different ways, tackling impending marriages, stale relationships, burgeoning romances, and everything in between.
Mia Wasikowska, for example, in a particularly interesting segment titled “Afterbirth” focuses on the love between a recent mother and her baby. Those of us who know she’s worked with David Cronenberg and Park Chan-wook will recognize the influences that run through this eerie, off-kilter attempt at depicting the disorienting world of new motherhood. Spoiler alert, it won’t pair well with Garry Marshall’s Mothers Day. Part of the strength of the film lies in Kathryn Beck’s performance; she’s all wide-eyed and...

Daniel Crooke here, salivating over today’s first wave of films from the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival’s line-up. While the Spotlight, Midnight, and Special Sections programs won’t drop until March 8, the Us Narrative, International Narrative, and World Documentary Competitions, and Viewpoints showcase hit the internet today and there’s plenty to buzz about. Scanning the films, you’ll find an embarrassment of riches hiding in the programming, plot details, and cast lists. Here are some personal points of interest:
Us Narrative Competition
Ingrid Jungermann’s webseries F to 7th was an astutely, hysterically observed slice of queer life in New York, giving voice to a uniquely cutting female perspective in the process, so her feature debut Women Who Kill shoots straight to the top of the list. The Fixer sounds intriguing in a small-town-with-secrets kind way, James Franco as an “eccentric local” a little less so. Queens of charting...

Not your run-of-the-mill future film festival selection, filmmakers Gael García Bernal (Déficit), Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur), Sebastián Silva (Nasty Baby), Shion Sono (Suicide Club), Natasha Khan and actress Mia Wasikowska each supplied a short supply with one overriding thematic that was commissioned by MTV World. While Madly doesn’t “scream” Sundance, we can’t help but think that the curious mix of filmmakers (including Park City habituals Silva and Bernal) adds enough clout to warrant a possible inclusion.

Alma Har’el broke out big in 2011 when Bombay Beach hit the Berlin Film Festival. Winner of the Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival and nominated for the Independent Spirit “Truer than Fiction” award and Cinema Eye Honors “Best Film Debut” and “Best Cinematography” awards we’ve been patiently waiting for a follow up since. A good morsel of LoveTrue was divulged (this snip-it is pure beauty) this past April at Tribeca as a work-in-progress and naturally Berlin and Tribeca are both lieus where this could shore up, but Sundance could be a good fit as well. Shia Labeouf who performed for her in the music video for Sigur Rós, supported this project.
