Not bad at all
fajarsantoso9 February 2021
I am Dutch and I am so not into Dutch movies/series. The last Dutch movie I saw was 2 decades ago but still I gave it a try as I never saw a Dutch movie about a Dutch environmental disaster.

What struck me the most was that this serie is so on point on the incapabilities of the Dutch government in light of a national disaster. Covid19 has showed that in real life.

No, it ain't a Hollywood movie with CGI, nor a British movie, Bollywood movie or any other major international movie production powerhouse. It's Dutch, create your expectations with that in mind and nothing more and you will be pleasantly suprised.

A pleasant surprise in many ways
pietclausen20 September 2020
A disaster movie with trauma, family drama and political leverage makes this mini-series a great watch. It is a fictitious story, but after having seen it, it made this reviewer look up what actual delta plan development is taking place in the Netherlands and parts of Belgium.

The story is not far fetched and people's behavior is spot on in crises of this nature. A well made product without spending millions on production costs made this series look and feel like the real thing!

series about a large-scale natural disaster and its aftermath
myriamlenys14 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Although the meaning of the word can vary, the term "The Low Countries" tends to apply to The Netherlands plus Belgium or, alternatively, The Netherlands plus Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. The expression pretty much explains itself : 1) much of these lands are as flat as a pancake and 2) much of these lands lie under or near sea level. As a result the inhabitants of these parts of the world (to which, by the way, I belong) are terrified of floods. This is especially true for the Dutch, who suffered atrociously during the 1953 flood disaster. In order to stave off similar disasters, titanic infrastructure works were undertaken and vast amounts of money were spent. It resulted in an unprecedented system of defences.

"Als de dijken breken" paints a scenario in which even these superb defences are thwarted and in which vast walls of water sweep through densely populated areas. In such times of crisis, people show their true colours. For instance, some prison guards are fully capable of letting prisoners drown like rats, while others will risk their lives in order to save prisoners trapped in cells. When immobilised on the road amidst other traffic, some car drivers will wait for human help or divine intervention ; others will leave the road with a mighty swerve, in order to flee through meadows and fields.

It's not a bad series but it suffers from the kind of clichés and tropes associated with disaster movies. For instance, you get your mandatory scenes with politicians understating the problem and delaying evacuation out of fear of hurting the economy. (In the series, strangely, it's the Dutch prime minister who delays too long, while his Belgian counterpart acts with commendable speed.) Moreover, the series works best while showing the actual disaster, complete with good effects and stunt work. The depiction of the aftermath is less convincing, mixing moments of fine acting and deep emotion with predictable clichés or boring digressions.

I won't tell you the ending, but it involves the Dutch prime minister proposing a technical solution so bonkers that it should get him a room in a mental institution. At least, that's my humble opinion ; in the series, there are people hailing the man as a visionary genius. ("And now for my next trick : dear fellow citizens, I propose to end world hunger by teaching every family on Earth how to catch and cook kangaroos !")

Still, "Als de dijken breken" deserves praise for the sweep and relevance of its subject matter. The Low Countries will survive or perish, depending on their ability to keep out the ever-threatening waters ; it is important that this topic remains the subject of a lively societal and scientific debate, especially in these times of climate change.

Impressive and disturbing series
cjfboon31 January 2021
I have now seen this series again and again I am impressed. Very good and realistic script and personalities, good actors. I do not understand the low reviews here. The Dutch are not good at appreciating their own high-quality film products, I guess...

very very mediocre disaster-drama
deboraey17 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
An unusually high tide and very strong gale conditions combine to produce a record high storm surge that overwhelms parts of The Netherlands and Belgium and floods large parts of both countries. The plot centers around various families who live through this catastrophe among which are the dutch prime minister and his wife. The special effects are impressive as one really sees large parts of the country largely submerged. I live in Belgium and it really makes you think how vulnerable we are in our houses near the Belgian or Dutch coasts, some 2 or 3 meters below sea level! This part of ALS DIJKEN BREKEN is all very well done and the effects artists responsible frankly deserved much better than to have their fine work punctuated by such a shallow and mediocre story. Indeed apart from the special effects it's not a very impressive or original series and sometimes it becomes even laughable in picturing the effects on the population. People that struggle to come to terms with the crisis situation and even have to suffer the loss of loved ones are portrayed in a very one-dimensional manner. Also it is as if there is barely any help for all those stranded people: there are no helicopters, no boats no rescue parties . . can you imagine! And yet many families in The Neterlands own a boat of some kind?? Some of the sequences in this movie are just plain silly: for instance the father and daughter that climbed into a pylon and sat there for hours and hours until . . . they get a telephone call and then . . get rescued! The ending is probably the worse - and most pathetic - I have seen in quite some time. Very much like they ran out of ideas. In overall the sad thing about this mini-series is that it could have been so much better, informative, imaginative and tense.

What an underrated gem!
alci3503 February 2023
This miniseries really surprised me! The accuracy of the cultures in Holland and Belgium, the dialects, the 'opinions' of the 'different' people against one and other were pictured as they really are over here! I was in for just the disaster story, but the personal stories were all so realistic, relatable and very interesting. No big heroes, no super bad guys, just normal people as they would act in real life. Like someone who committed a crime, was not beeing used as an antagonist, it was not the black and white 2d character like we are used to from hollywood, it had real depth. 3D characters that weren't cliché, really special. The 'relationships' (good, bad, tolerable, intolerable) between characters makes this series special. The ending was perfect and made sense for all storylines. I am very impressed, especially because there were no political opinions beeing forced on the viewers. Bravo!

Leuk verhaal maar stijf vol fouten
jaspervandijk8810 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers

Way better than reviews do believe
nscyyxx24 February 2024
This Dutch mini-series is much better than the reviews suggest. I found it to be a very realistic drama, considering the scenario of dikes collapsing and the country flooding, which could happen since the Netherlands is below sea level.

Watching this series gives you a different perspective on refugees. We often perceive refugees as something distant from our lives, but it only takes one disaster to turn us into refugees ourselves.

I've seen some complaints about the acting being bad, but throughout the entire series, I wasn't able to notice any such moments.

Especially for a Dutch series, I truly believe this one is worth watching. However, I might be biased since I'm from here.

Brilliant Reli-prop
vanwilgen11 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
What Dutch drama does very well is create emotional pits or moments. This is not a series with an overarching story line, a brilliant solution, or powerful characters. All of the characters are two dimensional and very predictable. Adding the iconic Aart Staartjes, Netherlands' quintessential 'kindervriend' adds a subplot that seems to want his monumental body of work. The writers should have had him play himself, there was absolutely no need to create a character for him. The other story lines seem to have been pulled from soaps. A man is about to leave his family for a "normal" woman but is now forced to stay with them and later with his estranged extended family. Another man is socially disturbed and needs to find his family in Belgium where his wife, a son and a mother in life are struggling on their own. Then there is the Turkish-Dutch prison guard who "escapes" with the Belgian. His loved ones are blown up and killed just because they followed the orders of the clueless prime-minister. The latter spills the beans to his wife who selfishly creates a stampede when she takes her sick father to safety while he told the people to stay put. The story snowballs to the bizarre last episode where "we" Dutch literally return to the year "zero" by building 'terpen,' elevations. There were moments I really enjoyed, there were mise-en-scenes which impressed me, but throughout the series I kept wondering, what is the point of all this? The series was co-produced by the EO, which is an Evangelical Public Television Company. The last scene is between the Prime Minister and the Turkish-Dutch prison guard, the only main character with a gun in this show. After the PM read his emotional letter he decided to have him vetted and set up a meeting. The meet at a provisional grave yard next, where his family was buried (and not in Turkey where he wanted them to be interned for eternity.) He pulls the gun at the PM but decides not do kill him but forgive him, to which the PM bursts out in tears stating that he never expected to be forgiven. They hug, the end. I honestly think it's brilliant reli-prop (religious propaganda).

Very frustrating scripting and horrible acting
woutermeerendonk16 August 2020
They could have done much better with the budget and the story it has. First of all, it's not realistic at all, with the main problem the scripts and acting. It all looks fake, the acting is also not convincing. The subject of the series is at least interesting what will happen if the dikes brake, but the movie about the zeeland flood is much better.

Tremendous disappointment
tijskenswim30 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This series shouldn't have been approved to be executed like this, for several reasons.

  • Despite consisting of only 6 episodes, the story is still way too stretched out. It feels like they only had material to make this a feature film or something.

  • I actually liked the first 2 episodes very much, as it was focussing on the realistic topic of flooding of a huge part of the Netherlands, as well as the subsequent political discussion of how to recover the economic heart of the country. However, from episode 3, all three subplots/side stories made it a whole other kind of series, carried by family drama that had little to do with the natural disaster.

  • Most of the acting was absolutely sub-par. Only the characters within the main storyline as well as the Flemish subplot did a decent job, whereas all the other Dutch characters felt very unnatural. It might be realistic though, but not to all viewers.

  • Also, the two subplots that were suffering from this horrible acting, didn't go anywhere and lacked some real drama. Therefor, it didn't contribute to keeping my attention.

  • Although the CGI looked good in most of the disaster scènes, the writing wasn't always spot on from a realistic point of view:
Guards who manage to escape from prisoners despite being surrounded, people of the emergency center not doing their job, four policemen can't handle one fugitive who manages to escape after they had grabbed him, a football stadium in Antwerp was used to depict Nijmegen, and so on.

The directing was definitely good. This series could have been a one-of-its-kind sensational drama filled with action, given the topic. Yet, it all appeared to be quite lackluster. The writing made it rather drepressing to watch.

I'm sure if Hollywood comes up with a comparable plot located in New Orleans, we can expect a lot more from it!

Bad acting in misogynistic disaster series
skyle-0510228 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was excited to watch this, as it was the first Dutch the disaster series in a long time. The basic idea is great....much of the Netherlands and Belgium are below sea-level and a disaster like this could happen at some point in time. I was very disappointed, though, especially because of the treatment of women. Women are hysterical, conniving, weak, and the men in the story are portraited as good natured or well-meaning heroes who fall victim to the actions of women. The PM is in a crisis because of what his wife did, you cannot stay with your brother because your wife and sister-in-law aren't getting along, your nation loses it's biggest harbor because of political backstabbing by the female VP, young girls get hurt because of their foolish actions while the boys obediently listen to their parents. The writer of this story clearly hates women...it's a shame that they were allowed to shoot this at all. 2 stars for the idea...-13 for the misogyny.

Badd ecisions made during a natural disater
jleeharris-369915 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie should be called "What not to do during a natural disaster", from not evacuating the residents to mommy letting the kids out to play with their new toy boat during a hurricane. Releasing the prisoners wasn't too smart either. Don't waste your time.
